  • Lean protein, such as eggs, fish, beans, or nuts
  • Healthy fats, such as olive oil, avocado, grass-fed butter and dairy, coconut, and nuts
  • Non-starchy vegetables, such as peppers, tomatoes, onions, and especially dark leafy greens

Breakfast Smoothie With Berries And Greek Yogurt

    Jill Weisenberger

You dont have to say So long to smoothies for breakfast, even if you have type 2 diabetes. The key is to make sure its a balanced smoothie, with protein and fiber, and that it’s relatively low in sugar. Moderation is key, so stick to a small glass.

Take this Very Berry Smoothie recipe from Jill Weisenberger, RDN, CDCES, of Yorktown, Virginia, the author of Diabetes Weight Loss Week by Week. What I love about this smoothie besides that its delicious is that its packed with protein just from the Greek yogurt no protein powders needed, she says. Each 1½ cup serving of this smoothie offers a whopping 22 grams of protein, with 30 g of carbs and 5 g of fiber.

Plus, because the recipe has just four ingredients yogurt, frozen berries , sweetener of your choice , and milk makes it a perfect breakfast when youre in a rush. Its fast and even portable, and all the ingredients are something youd have at home or that are easy to substitute, adds Weisenberger.

What Kind Of Smoothie Did Brenda Have

Brenda came into clinic. She was proud of herself because she was drinking smoothies. She had heard they were healthy. Her A1C was still a 9. Her fasting blood sugar was 197 mg/dl.

What kind of things do you put in your smoothie, Brenda, I said.

Well I put a banana in, and a half cup of blueberries since theyre in season, she said. I have to put a few spoons of sugar in cause the blueberries are a little tart, a little early. You know, I put in some honey from the bee keeper down the road.

Oh, ok, I said, thinking. Is your glass this big? , or is your glass this big? , or is it this big .

Thats it, said Brenda, pointing to the last marvellously super-sized giant glass. Its my whole breakfast. Thats healthy, right?

Now I had to think. Brenda didnt have horrible ingredients, but her portions were huge! I took a deep breath. Do you know how to count carbohydrates, I said.

    No, said Brenda.

Well, would you like to learn how? Yes, said Brenda. Alright, class is next week. Meanwhile, heres a juice glass. Lets go with a juice-glass size smoothie that you make at home, ok?

Ok, I cant drink it all anyway.

Good, what do you think about just honey? Do you think it would be sweet enough with just a teaspoon of honey?

Yes, said Brenda. That will cut the sugar down if I just use honey.

Great, now can you add a spoon of peanut butter, the natural kind, for good fats and protein? Sure, I can do that. It sounds delicious.

    Are Smoothies Good For You

The answer is a little complicated basically, yes and no. Before we dive into my favorite diabetic smoothie recipes, lets talk about why.

Smoothies have become popular as a healthy, easy breakfast or snack you can enjoy on-the-go. However, not all smoothies are created equal.

In fact, many of the smoothies you can buy at a shop or the store are actually packed with sugar and unhealthy ingredients. Some are as bad as eating a candy bar!

The trick to making healthy smoothies? Its all in the ingredients.

    Avocado And Egg On Toast

Rather than having a sweet spread on toast, opt for something heartier instead. Using an avocado or an egg on toast is an easy way to do this. Having them both together is even better.

After all, avocados and eggs do have different advantages. Avocados are most well-known for their healthy fats and creaminess, while eggs are an easy source of protein.

Once again, sprouted bread will be the healthiest option here. You could also turn to whole grain bread. If you do so, look for a product that includes some entire seeds or grains too, rather than processing everything down into flour.

    Diabetic-Friendly Pina Colada Smoothie

    Smoothie Ingredients

    • 1 cup light plain yogurt
    • 1 cup fresh or canned pineapple
    • 1 tsp. non-alcoholic coconut extract or coconut flavor
    • 1 cup crushed ice

To prepare this diet smoothie, put all the ingredients in a blender, then process on high speed until the ice is liquefied and the mixture is smooth. I prefer using fresh pineapple, as it has lower sugar content and no preservatives. If you don’t want to be bothered with the slicing and cleaning process, however, canned pineapple will come in handy.

Drink it the classy way: Garnish your pina colada smoothie with a pineapple slice or cocktail umbrella. To add a tropical air to it, you could serve this scrumptious drink in a hollowed-out pineapple. Enjoy it while sitting by a sparkling pool and leave all your worries behind.

Using frozen fruit or vegetables will eliminate the need for ice which will lead to an overall better textured smoothie.
