What Not To Add To Healthy Smoothies

There really aren’t too many things you shouldn’t be adding to smoothies, but I can say with confidence that sugar and ice are the biggest no-nos in my book.

First up, ice will totally water down your smoothies if you don’t drink them right away and you need a super high-powered blender to get a smoother consistency.

Second, you can get sweeter smoothies with natural ingredients don’t add calories or reduce the healthiness by adding sugar!

Blenders have gotten so advanced in the past few years, that its hard to pick one that wont blend up a great smoothie! If youre blender shopping, here are the three blenders we recommend for daily smoothie-making:

  • MOST AFFORDABLE: Cuisinart Immersion/Stick BlenderDont let its small size fool you, this tiny handheld blender is packed full of power, and will easily make a smoothie for you every day! Its perfect if youre limited on counter space.
  • MEDIUM: Ninja Professional BlenderFor under $100, you get an incredibly powerful blender that makes a dreamy, creamy smoothie. This was the blender we used in the Wholefully test kitchen for years, and its a great starter-level, but still high-powered, blender.
  • SPLURGE: Vitamix Professional BlenderA Vitamix is the top of the line when it comes to blenders, and its what we use every day in the Wholefully test kitchen. It comes with a hefty price tag , so if youre just blending a smoothie every now and again, there is no need to make the splurge. But if you do a lot of cooking or make a lot of smoothies or blended drinks, you might want to start saving your pennies for a Vitamix. Its a lifetime appliance that is a dream to use!

Basic Steps For How To Make A Fruit Smoothie

Frozen Fruit Smoothie

1. Add your frozen fruit of choice

In this case, we used blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries. However, any type of frozen fruit will work great!

2. Add a yogurt or banana base to thicken

Plain greek yogurt and/or bananas are great for thickening smoothies.

3. Add protein powder

Adding protein powder helps sweeten the smoothie and, of course, adds protein. This is always an optional step!

4. Add your milk of choice

Our favorite is unsweetened almond milk, but cashew milk, coconut milk, oat milk, and regular dairy milk are all great options as well.

To make the smoothie: Simply blend everything in a single serving blender and enjoy! Another option is to pour the smoothie into mason jars and freeze for quick smoothies throughout the week. Simply thaw in the refrigerator a few hours before youre ready to drink it !

How To Make Smoothies In A Food Processor

Making a fresh glass of smoothie in your food processor isnt a complicated task. In fact, it is pretty quick to do.

However, before setting up your food processor, you need to know which kind of ingredients you need to be cautious of since these might end up causing damage to your appliance.

You need to be careful of ice, hard fruits and vegetables like apples or carrots, rock-solid frozen berries because they will not only give you a difficult time during the process but might also end up breaking some parts of the food processor too.

Its always better to thaw your fruits or vegetables before placing them in the appliance, so you dont break it.

But other than these few ingredients that can potentially cause damage to your machine, you can pretty much throw in anything else, and you are good to go.

Dont forget that the more liquid your ingredients have, the smoother your final product will be!

So make sure to include some water or juice when making a smoothie using the food processor.

Now thats settled, lets start making the best refreshment ever!

    How To Thicken A Smoothie

Using frozen fruit, such as frozen banana, berries, mango or peaches, will thicken a smoothie. Blending in chia seeds or uncooked old fashioned oats can also help to make a smoothie thicker. If you find that your smoothie isnt thick enough after blending, blend in a little more frozen fruit. Ice is not the best way to thicken a smoothie because as the ice melts, it will water down your drink.

    Equipment For Healthy Smoothies

    30+ Healthy Fruit Smoothie Recipes

Having the right equipment is key to making healthy smoothies.

    • The Vitamix personal series is great for making just one or two smoothies at a time
    • So is the Magic Bullet or Nutri Bullet the only hang up here is that I find I have to replace these models once every couple years or so because the motor eventually burns out
    • The Vitamix Ascent series is my fave though it’s self-cleaning so you aren’t left with a ton of mess and it’s perfect for if you’re prepping 3-4 smoothies at a time. It can tear through anything to make the smoothest smoothie, even ice!

You can of course get a mid-range blender too, really any blender will work. But if it takes 3 or more tries to get that smooth texture without all the lumps, it can be a frustrating experience.

See how often you’re going to be making smoothies and if it’s going to be a consistent thing for you, your best bet is to invest in a high-powered blender that can minimize the time you spend making healthy smoothies.
