How To Make A Green Smoothie
Lets break down exactly what you need to make the perfect green smoothie! In the Fit Foodie Kitchen, we use a basic recipe that we deviate from depending on whats in the fridge and what our bodies are craving.
Sowhats in a green smoothie?
Frozen Fruit we like to use frozen fruit in order to omit ice from our green smoothies so that you can get a smoother, creamier smoothie. We recommend banana, berries, mangoes, pineapple, etc. For a single serving, shoot to use around 1 cup of frozen fruit.
Greens- obviously every green smoothie has some kind of green! Whether its spinach, kale, or microgreen, any kind of green will work. Here are our favorites:
- beet greens
Sweetie Pea Green Smoothie
This Sweetie Pea Green Smoothie is one of my favorite green smoothies recipes when I want to change up my greens. It tastes amazing and is full of antioxidants and other nutrients.
Peas are very good for you. Due to their high fiber and protein content, they are very filling. This may reduce how much food you eat and can lead to weight loss in the long term .
Green Smoothie Recipe Variations
I love this green smoothie recipe as written, but feel free to play with it! Swap in whats in season or what you have on hand. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Mix up the greens. Replace the spinach with a small handful of kale.
- Swap the herbs. Try using cilantro, parsley, basil, or arugula instead of mint. Or if you prefer, skip the herbs altogether!
- Add more fruit. Frozen fruits like frozen mango, strawberries, or blueberries would all taste good here. Or if you want to make a green smoothie that tastes sweeter, blend in one or two Medjool dates!
- Up the protein. Blend in your favorite protein powder or a scoop of Greek yogurt.
- Give it an extra flavor boost. Grate in fresh ginger or lemon zest, or add a squeeze of lemon juice or a sprinkle of cinnamon.
- Use a different nut butter. Dont like almond butter? Use cashew butter instead. You could also replace the nut butter and with a scoop of hemp seeds, chia seeds, or flaxseed.
Let me know what variations you try!

Freezer Prep Bag Or Jars
- Layer frozen fruits, powders, nut butters, seeds, chopped fresh or frozen veggies and chopped fresh or frozen greens into quart-size freezer bags or Mason jars.
- Squeeze the air out of the bag, seal it and freeze for up to three months.
- To make your smoothie, pour the ingredients into your blender, add your liquid of choice and blend until smooth.
Use A Vitamix Blender
If youve been around my blog for a while then you know that I exclusively blend with a Vitamix ! So its not surprising that I will tell you that the best way to achieve silky smooth green smoothies is to use a Vitamix blender!
I bought my first Vitamix because I was sick of chewing my green smoothies ?! I wanted a blender that would pulverize anything and everything I put into my smoothies and the Vitamix was the answer. If you dont have a Vitamix yet I highly recommend getting one ASAP!

How To Make Our Green Smoothie :
I have two favorite things about this green smoothie.
First: the taste and texture are literally the best. Its smooth and creamy not icy like a slushie and not runny like a juice. Just a perfectly perfect, creamy, satisfying smoothie.
Second: the moment I remember I had this for breakfast and feel so good about myself for already getting so many fruits and veggies in AND ITS NOT EVEN LUNCH YET. This is a good moment.
Third : you can easily prep it ahead of time with all your other meal prep stuff. Just pack your mango, peaches, kale, and ginger into a bag and freeze it up. When youre ready to blend, add your liquid of choice and get after it.
One ginger consideration:
I usually use a ginger paste but I recently realized that sadly it is made with sugar. Sad. No wonder I like it so much. Its got a full 1 gram of sugar in less than a teaspoon, so since Im doing the whole Sugar Free January thing and trying to recalibrate my palette away from super-sweet things, lately I have been making it with a hunk of fresh ginger. And that seems to work just fine as well. The one thing to consider is that when its frozen, it is rock solid, so depending on what kind of blender you have you might want to just let everything sit out for a while before giving it a whirl.
Im telling ya. This one is the best.
Thank you, frozen fruit and creamy almond milk and spicy ginger and powerhouse kale, for being so lovely together.

Throw everything together in your blender and blend until smooth and creamy. If you like chilled smoothies and choose to use ice, be aware that not all types of blenders can cope with this well, and it might damage your blender.

The Best Ratio For Leafy Greens In Smoothies
Dont just throw everything in your blender and keep your fingers crossed itll turn out well. Chances are itll taste awful!
Its better to plan your green smoothie and decide on the ratio of fruits and veggies youre going to use. If youre a green smoothie beginner, start slow and work yourself up!
In the beginning, a 50/50 ratio is a good start. That means 50% of veggies and 50% fruits. Fruits act like a spoonful of sugar that makes you enjoy your medicine .
I know many people are concerned about adding too many fruits can let your blood sugar spike.
I wouldnt worry about it too much.
Its more likely youll keep your new habit of making green smoothies if you can enjoy the taste. Once youre getting used to green smoothies, you can easily reduce the number of fruits and add more leafy greens. An 80/20 ratio is a great ratio to aim for once youre more experienced.

Green Smoothie Freezer Bags
Wondering if you can meal prep smoothies for the week? You sure can!
Wash, dry, and chop your fruits and vegetables then portion them out into freezer-friendly containers or bags. Then, place your bags into the freezer until ready for use. When youre ready to make a smoothie, simply take the frozen fruit and veggies out of the bag, add them to your blender, add your ice water and orange juice, and blend. No need to thaw before blending!
Remember to always peel your bananas prior to freezing! This is also a great way to save any fruits that are close to becoming overripe.

Frozen Bananas And Wild Blueberries
Many dietitians like to add frozen fruit to smoothies including Elizabeth Ward, MS, RD, owner of Better is the New Perfect. Her favorite combo is frozen sliced bananas and frozen wild blueberries, which supply fiber, potassium and beneficial plant compounds called phytonutrients, along with great taste. Plus, Ward says, “frozen fruit makes smoothies thicker and frothier without using ice, which dilutes the flavor.”

Potential Risks Of Green Smoothies
Because there are many ways to make a green smoothie, its possible to add too many sugars, carbohydrates, or fats. The potent vitamin content in leafy greens may also be unsuitable for people with certain medical conditions.
Things to consider when whipping up your green smoothie include:
Leafy greens are naturally low in calories and fat. However, common green smoothie additions like fruits, nut butters, sweeteners, or milks can add excessive amounts of these nutrients to a single serving. Too much fat or caloric intake can lead to unwanted weight gain, so measure your portions so you know whats in your drink.
Excess sugar not only leads to weight gain, but may also increase your blood sugar levels, increasing the risk of diabetes. Fruits and nut butters contain numerous vitamins and minerals, but can also have a high natural sugar content, so moderate the amount added to your green smoothie.
The high Vitamin K content in leafy greens can reduce the effects of certain anticoagulant drugs. While people taking blood-thinners do not need to avoid vitamin K, you should still talk to your doctor about how much you should consume.

Our 6 Best Healthy Smoothies
Searching for a healthy smoothie recipe? Check out these delicious recipes that are quick and easy to make for breakfast, as a snack or even dessert.
Smoothies are a go-to for many of us looking for something quick and healthy. Whether youre in need of a grab-and-go breakfast or a fuss-free snack, smoothies are a great option that can satisfy even the pickiest of eaters.
With that said, not all smoothies are created equally. Loading up on high-sugar fruit and juices or adding lots of sweeteners can result in a less than healthy offering. Instead, try to balance the different elements in your smoothie when aiming for something that will keep you fuller for longer. Mixing both fruits and vegetables can result in a higher fibre content, while still maintaining a sweet taste. Additionally, including items like nuts, milk and yogurt can boost the protein and healthy fat content, helping you to feel fuller throughout the day.
