Chocolate Cherry Protein Smoothie- made with just 4 ingredients, this protein smoothie is the perfect treat to whip up after a workout. Each one packs 25 grams of protein!

This is one of those recipes thats so basic Im kind of embarrassed to share it with you. I just threw a few things together that I had on hand and loved it so much that I make it several times a week now. Its such a delicious and refreshing treat on a warm day after a good workout.

Unlike most of my other smoothie recipes, this one calls for protein powder. Thats because I typically try to get my protein from whole food sources but in this case, it makes for a much shorter ingredient list which is super important when you have a toddler. If you know, you know.

Chocolate Protein Shake Without Banana:

This Mint Chocolate Protein Shake Recipe Is Everything ...

This is a request I get a lot! People seem to love or hate bananas in their protein shakes and smoothies. If you happen to be someone who does not like bananas in their frozen treats, have no worries, this is an easy fix. Simply swap in an equal amount of frozen mango or frozen avocado. Both of these options will give the same thick, creamy texture without banana.

Lets take a closer look at each of the three ingredients that go into making this smoothie in order to see why theyre all such great choices. Starting with ½ cup of plain Greek yogurt, youll be adding a great tasting source of protein . Not only does adding Greek yogurt help to considerably ramp up the protein content of this recipe, but its also an excellent source of probiotics for giving your gut health a boost as well. Research has shown that probiotic intake has been linked with a better immune system response as well as improved metabolic processes. Greek yogurt also provides all of the same great nutrients that regular yogurt provides you, including vitamin B12, calcium, and potassium.

In order to further up the protein content of this recipe, youll also be adding in one scoop of chocolate whey protein powder. As Ive mentioned before, whenever I purchase whey protein, I always make sure to buy whey isolate. Its the purest form of whey available and its a complete protein source. You can get the exact brand of chocolate whey isolate that I use by its made by Isopure and provides 25 grams of protein per serving. It also provides five grams of branched chain amino acids per scoop along with an excellent added blend of vitamins and minerals.

Recipe Tips & Substitutions

  • If you arent on a vegan diet, you can replace the coconut milk with full-fat whole milk.
  • To make this recipe vegan, be sure to use a vegan protein powder like pea protein. See my list of the best paleo and clean eating protein powders with vegan options.
  • If you dont have a high-speed blender like a Vitamix or Blendtec, you may need to stop the blender and scrape down the sides to ensure that the ingredients get fully blended.

The Obvious One Chocolate Protein

HOW TO MAKE A PROTEIN SHAKE | BEST CHOCOLATE PROTEIN SHAKE RECIPE

If youre making a chocolate protein smoothie, then the number one ingredient is going to be chocolate flavored protein powder.

This is going to be the main protein source in the smoothie. I always advocate using a natural, health protein powder if you want to make a protein smoothie. Adding a ton of nut butter and oats is going to simply give you a weight gainer smoothie. The nut butter is just too calorie dense.

So, my chocolate protein smoothies will all have chocolate flavored protein powder in them.

I like to use a clean vegan protein powder, but you can also make a great chocolate protein smoothie with whey.

Finally, you can choose an unflavored protein powder. But if you want to get the chocolate flavor into your smoothie, youre going to have to add chocolate flavor elsewhere. I cover this below when I discuss cacao powder and other ingredients.

Chocolate Flavored Vegan Protein

Here are some good chocolate flavored proteins. Im partial to Vega protein of the selection here. I like the texture and the flavor, but all are quality and well made proteins.

Chocolate Flavored Whey Protein

Whey does blend up smoother and is easier to make in a blender bottle. But if youre making a smoothie, thats not as big an issue. Some people like to use whey for their straight water and protein powder shakes, though. And if you dont want to have a vegan and whey protein at home, then thats understandable.

Classic Chocolate Milkshake Protein Smoothie

The sweet, creamy texture of milkshakes makes one of the most tempting desserts. But did you know that fast food milkshakes can have between 500 to 1,000 calories in just one milkshake? Not to mention they are typically close to 30 grams of fat . If youre trying to lose weight and build a toned physique, fast food milkshakes just arent going to cut it. What does cut it, however, is our delicious classic chocolate milkshake protein smoothie. Coming in at just under 400 calories, this mock milkshake will leave you feeling satisfied while also giving you the protein needed to build muscles and lose weight. To create this creamy treat, combine these simple ingredients and blend until smooth:

  • 2 Tbsp. plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 scoops of either Natural Chocolate Performance Whey Protein OR Mega Chocolate Milkshake Mass Gainer
  • ½ cup of water
  • 1 cup of ice

Tips For This Recipe:

  • Youll need a high-speed blender or a food processorto make this thick smoothie bowl. However, if you have a regular blender, simply add more almondmilk to thin it out and serve it as a smoothie or shake!
  • I always keep a stash of frozen bananas in my freezer . You can use them in smoothies, healthy no-churn ice creams and in baked goods like banana bread.
  • I love the flavor of nut butter in this smoothie, which also provides a boost of protein and healthy fats .
  • Raw cacao powder is made with un-roasted cocoa beans and has a richer flavor than regular cocoa powder. However, you can use regular cocoa powder if thats what you have.
  • If a chocolate protein shake is more your jam, simply add more almondmilk to thin out the smoothie. You can also add a scoop of protein powder, if you prefer.

Add Extra Nutrients To This Chocolate Protein Shake:

Its easy to add extra vitamins and minerals to any shake or smoothie by adding some nutrient-rich ingredients. Here are some suggestions:

  • Ground flaxseed add up to about a tablespoon to give your shake a boost of fiber, healthy fats and antioxidants.
  • Chia seeds you can mix in up to a tablespoon of chia seeds to give your shake extra healthy fats and fiber.
  • Hemp seeds another seed that will add extra healthy fats, omegas and minerals.
  • Oats rolled or quick oats can be blended in your shake to really give it staying power! You can add up to about 1/3 cup of oats. Do not use steel cut oats, as they will not blend well.
  • Avocado adding about 1/4 or 1/2 an avocado adds healthy fats and will make your shake extra thick and creamy.

Honey Coconut Sugar Or Maple Syrup

Chocolate Mocha Protein Shake for Coffee Lovers

You can certainly add a sweetener to your chocolate smoothie, but I want to caution that what were talking about here is a chocolate smoothie, not a dessert.

Smoothies often times are used interchangeably by folks to mean anything that is made in a blender.

But once you start adding sweeteners, and certainly if you throw in ice creams then youre basically having a sweet dessert.

But, if you are someone who wants a chocolate protein smoothie that is still healthy, Id advise against adding too many sweeteners.

So, with that in mind, i suggest that you stick to either raw honey or organic maple syrup. You can use either one or both.

Raw honey does impart a strong flavor, but if youre using a chocolate flavored protein, the honey wont mask it.

The other reason to use raw honey is that is has a number of health benefits.

I would like to point out that its only raw honey, and not normal honey or honey product, that has the helpful health benefits. So, if youre going to use honey in your chocolate protein smoothie, use a good raw honey.

Heres a few good raw honey options to use.

The other option is maple syrup. To start with, maple syrup cannot be raw. Thats because the process of making maple syrup requires heating maple tree sap to boil it down to syrup.

So, please choose an organic maple syrup. And of course, dont choose a maple syrup flavored product. Some unethical sellers try and package maple syrup flavored product .
