Gluten Free Dairy Free Fruit Smoothie

The smoothie as we know it has been around since the natural food movement of the 1960s and 70s. At that time, smoothies were most often made from fruit, ice, and juice. But this kind of beverage dates back much further in other cultures. For example, people in Latin America and India have been making fruit smoothies for much longer.

But smoothies made from only fruit and juice are not actually that healthy. Both are high in sugars and can send blood sugar out of whack. Today, there are many variations of smoothies that contain healthy fats and proteins, making smoothies a true health food .

How I Make My Vegan Smoothies

Each morning I open the freezer and choose what fruit Id like to have. I keep my freezer stocked with dark sweet cherries, peaches, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple and a tropical mix of strawberry, banana, mango, and papaya.

Next, I grab the So Delicious Dairy Free Organic Almondmilk, coconut milk yogurt and fresh spinach.

First frozen fruit
Then the yogurt
Top with fresh spinach

Now Ill be honest, I dont often measure, but I did this time so I could give you an accurate measurement. I use the following:

  • 1 1/2 cups frozen fruit
  • 3/4 cup almondmilk
  • 6-oz container coconut milk yogurt
  • A handful of fresh spinach

All thats left to do is blend. I suggest using a good blender. I use a BlendTec but ive heard raving reviews about VitaMix as well. Ive had my BlendTec for several years and use it daily. I simply push the smoothie button and let it do all the work.

Why I Love Smoothies

If youve been around awhile it will come as no surprise that I love a good smoothie recipe. I mean, who doesnt want a delicious meal that can be made in minutes and taken on the go? Not to mention, theyre incredibly good for you, too! Okay, dont get me wrong. Some smoothies, like those bought in stores, are loaded with sugars and are the exact opposite of healthy. However, around here, theyre made in the kitchen and loaded with fresh fruit, vegetables, healthy fats, and even some protein. As a result, homemade smoothies have incredible health benefits including:

  • Improved digestion
  • Improved hydration
  • Clear skin

Plus, if you know the right ingredients to use, you can easily create a nutritious smoothie that tastes like dessert!

Easy Dairy

You have a few options when it comes to a dairy-free milk. Soy milk is a bit higher in calories, but also boasts more protein and B vitamins. Almond milk, on the other hand, is higher in vitamin D and calcium.

Hemp milk is not traditionally a favorite however, many vegetarians are familiar with this option. Hemp milk has a creamier texture, which often works well in a smoothie. Hemp milk may be rich in the omega-3 fatty acids, but it is important to use one that is fortified with calcium and vitamins to get the most nutritious kind.

You will notice that this recipe doesn’t include any icethat’s because the trick to a satisfying dairy-free smoothie is to ditch the ice and use frozen fruit instead. This delivers maximum flavor and helps keep the smoothie from becoming watery. A mix of fresh and frozen fruit works fine depending on what you have on hand. For best results, at least half of the fruit should be the frozen.

When you have bananas that are becoming overripe, simply peel them and put them in a zippered plastic bag in your freezer. They will be perfect to toss into your smoothie at a moment’s notice. Don’t worry if they turn somewhat browntheir flavor won’t be affected. The frozen banana will add a creamy texture to the smoothie.

If you like your smoothie on the sweeter side you can add ingredients like maple syrup, agave, honey, or even non-calorie sweeteners if you want to keep the calories in check.
