Healthy Hack: DIY Frozen Smoothie Packs

Açaí is a nutrient-packed, low-sugar berry thats rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and a great source of fiber and amino acids. These packs are always in my freezer for smoothies or smoothie bowls. Just run a pack under a little warm water for a few seconds, snap it in half with your hands once its softened a bit, then cut open the pack and pop it in a blender to use however you want. Try it with frozen blueberries, frozen banana, some greens, and any liquid base you like .

I have to be honest: I hate fresh mango, but for whatever reason, I love frozen mango. Costco carries a four-pound bag of organic mango thats always less than $10, and sometimes as low as $7. Like pineapple, mango is incredibly high in vitamin C it also contains beta-carotene, an antioxidant our bodies use to form vitamin A for healthy immunity and optimal skin health. Frozen mango is really tasty when blended with frozen strawberries, pineapple, some greens, and coconut yogurt or eaten alone as a snack right out of the freezer.

The best guide for knowing what produce to buy organically is The EWG List, published annually. When shopping for green smoothies on a budget, use this guide to keep my produce clean, yet still doable.

The produce on the Clean 15 list can be more safely purchased as non-organic, though feel free to purchase these ingredients organically grown as well.

The foods on the Fresh 15 list either have a shell or skin that protects the fruit underneath, or the farming practices do not genetically modify or use the same chemicals as the first list. If buying all organic is not an option for your budget, use these lists as your guide to the safest, most delicious smoothie ingredients.

Although Kirklands regular strawberries come in a six-pound bag and cost the same price, I always go for their organic four-pound bag of strawberries instead. Conventional strawberries are consistently one of the top foods that contain the most pesticides. So Id rather spend the same amount of money and get the smaller, organic bag. Luckily, Kirklands organic strawberries are always massive in size, so I feel like Im getting a lot for my money. When it comes time to make your smoothie, you can easily take one smoothie freezer pack out of your freezer. Blend all the ingredients, in addition to your liquid base, until smooth.

You can either blend your smoothie frozen, or you can defrost the pack in the fridge the night before you make it.

Today Im sharing one of my favorite recipes with pineapple, mango, clementines, and spinach.

Many times, I will take my overripe fruits and stick them into the freezer so that they can be added into a smoothie later on.

While making smoothies doesnt require much culinary know-how, there are some things you need to keep in mind. Here are some common smoothie mistakes:

  • Packing the blender too full. This can lead to the blade getting jammed. While its tempting to take the more is better approach and add every powder and seed you have in your cupboard, its smarter to keep things simple.
  • Adding your dry ingredients first: Oops this will prevent items like protein powder from getting incorporated into the smoothie properly. Always start with liquids first, like milk or plant milk, juice, water or yogurt. They help to create a vortex, which makes it easier for other ingredients to get blended in properly.
  • Adding too many frozen ingredients: Frozen fruits and veggies are generally a better bargain than fresh and are excellent in smoothies. You just cant add all of them in together, or else you might end up with a frozen clump. Try combining frozen ingredients, like cubes of mango or berries, with a fresh banana and spinach.
  • Letting your blender sit before cleaning it. You will regret this one! Unfortunately, smoothies have a way of coating the interior of your blender really well, and then adhering to it as the contents dry. Instead of letting it sit once you pour out your smoothie, fill it ¾ of the way with warm water, add a couple drops of liquid dish soap and blend! The stuck-on smoothie will release, and you can just give it a rinse and let it air dry.

    You can drink smoothies as a snack or meal replacement, but its a good idea to know which types to choose especially if you have a specific fitness or body composition goal in mind.

    Theres a common misconception that smoothies are inherently low calorie snacks, but some smoothies pack over 1,000 calories depending on their size and ingredients.

    Generally, a 200300-calorie smoothie with 10 grams of protein is a great snack, whereas a 400800-calorie smoothie providing at least 20 grams of protein is better suited as a meal replacement. Its best to assess your goals and calorie needs to determine your specific needs.

    The difference between the two may be as simple as adjusting the serving size.

    Many smoothie chains provide the ingredient and nutrition information for each of their products, which usually come in 1632-ounce servings.

    Into the whole rice cauliflower trend? Im not, but I love any excuse to sneak in a veggie and this massive four-pound bag is my favorite way to eat more cauliflower, considering I normally go for broccoli. I dont use this as a replacement for rice instead, I put some into smoothies , soups, or stews, or Ill even sauté or steam some in a pan with a little water with other veggies and some seasonings. It means less chopping on my part and it saves me some money, as this bag lasts me a solid two months.

    How To Make A Smoothie

    Making smoothies is very simple and takes roughly 5 minutes from start to finish.

  • Add Ingredients: Place all of your ingredients into a blender.
  • Blend: Press the smoothie button on your blender or start on low speed and increase to high speed for 2-3 minutes. Do not under blend, you want all of the pieces of fruit and veggies completely smoothie,
  • Add More: Add more milk or liquid if the smoothie is too thick. I have found that toddlers and kids like a thinner consistency of smoothies since it is easier to drink out of a straw.
  • Drink: Pour into a cup with a lid and serve.

    Do Smoothies Aid Weight Loss

    Smoothies are frequently marketed as a weight loss tool.

    Research suggests they may be effective for this purpose as long as theyre not causing you to exceed your daily calorie needs.

    While some people find smoothies an easy way to monitor food portions and stay on top of their weight loss goals, others may not feel as full when they drink their calories rather than eating them.

    Ultimately, although weight loss can be a complex process with many contributing factors, its important to expend more calories than you take in. If a smoothie helps you offset other calories you would otherwise consume, it can be an effective weight loss tool.
