Three Vegetable Smoothie Recipes

One of my nutrition goals is to make sure to fuel my body with nutritiously dense foods.

One of my favorite ways to get in some quick, easy, and healthy nutrition is with smoothies! I know adding vegetables to smoothies can still be a little taboo for some, so I wanted to create 3 veggie-packed smoothie recipes for beginners.

First of all, I promise you cant taste the veggies, and you wont even know that theyre there.

The Best Tips For Making Fruit And Veggie Smoothies

Best Fruit Smoothie Combinations That Taste & Blend Good ...
  • Blend your vegetables and liquid first. This helps them get as smooth as possible.
  • Try baby food. My favorite option for super smooth veggie smoothies is to grab a jar of baby food and blend that in. With baby food, youll still get the fiber of a vegetable but it will melt away into the drink more than if you blend them in whole. Or try making your own vegetable purees for babies.
  • Either fresh or steamed/defrosted frozen options will blend into your smoothie the easiest. Frozen will work too, so long as you have a high speed blender. Otherwise, it might leave texture.
  • Next, choose super sweet fruit, especially when first starting to add veggies. A banana or two will cover up any veggie taste and make it super creamy. In addition, fruits like mango, strawberries, pineapples, and cantaloupe will go a long way because of the sweetness.
  • Skip the juice and use milk and yogurt for creaminess and whole fruits for the fruity taste. Fruit and vegetable juices contain none of the fiber that whole foods have. Fiber is vital for your body, but sometimes hard to get for picky eaters.
  • Start with sweeter veggies. Carrots, sweet potatoes, peas, corn, and butternut squash will offer vitamins and nutrients while remaining less detectable.
  • Another option for masking the look is using darker hued fruits like blueberries or lighter vegetables like cauliflower. Also, try pairing fruits and vegetable of similar colors.

Our Favourite Green Smoothie For Kids

Green smoothies are all the rage, I have had some disasters with green smoothies and kids. Words for the wise, watercress is not a good idea, way too peppery. But this green smoothie combination is one my kids do enjoy. Banana + Mango + Spinach + Almonds +Water

When I make this smoothie I use either fresh or frozen Spinach and Mango, so you can have it all year round. This smoothie works well with a couple of dates added to is if your kiddos need a little bit more sweetness.

Tips For Making Fruit And Veggie Smoothies For Kids

If your kids are new to smoothies and wary of veggies then I would suggest the following to start with

  • Steam the veggies first. You can certainly use raw veggies but you will get a much smoother texture is veggies such as broccoli, carrot, cauliflower are steamed first. So if you have a picky eater and you are making them their first fruit and veggie smoothie, think about steaming the veggies. It doesnt need to necessarily be an extra step. I just save cooked veggies from the evening meal to use over the coming days
  • A small amount of sweetener may help. My kiddos drink these smoothies without added sugar/sweeteners, if your kiddo needs a little more encouragement, a small amount of honey, maple syrup or some dried fruit like a couple of dates may go a long way to help get them drinking smoothies with veggies to begin with, once they are drinking them, you can remove the sweetener.
  • Try fun names, it might just work, maybe, Im not sure, Ive had mixed results. Ha Ha Ha!
  • You can get great opaque smoothie cups, ie cups that you cant see through with nice thick straws. If your kid is a bit weary of the colour of the smoothie, try one of those cups, then they wont be able to see it, they will just taste it and hopefully be none the wiser of the veggies content. As they get more confident with the veggie content you can pop it in a clear cup
  • If It Feels Good Drink It

    Detoxing Blended Smoothies

The rigid rules of food combining makes eating complicated, isnt necessary, and doesnt serve me. My approach to diet and green smoothies is that if it feels good, Ill keep drinking it!

That includes my citrus-banana smoothies, and my plum-papaya creations, and blending every fruit I can get my hands on with every vegetable Im brave enough to toss into my blender pitcher. And watermelon smoothies! Ignore the rules and enjoy your green smoothies instead!

    • 4 cups or handfuls of fresh baby spinach
    • 1/4 avocado
    • 1 scoop protein powder or your favorite superfoods

What To Do With Leftover Smoothie

If you have any leftover smoothie, just pop the extras in the fridge or freezer and enjoy later. My kids like to put them in the freezer and then eat when it is frozen. The smoothie will become frozen hard and you will need a spoon to scrape it up. As it begins to thaw, the smoothie is easier to eat.

    Fruit And Veggie Smoothies

5 Fruit and Veggie Smoothies: A refreshing and energizing smoothie for each day of the work week!

In the distant future, lets say the year 3020, I would assume food would be consumed differently. Everything would revolve around efficiency.

Instead of real food, wed all be eating pills, powders, and shakes of sorts. Turkey and stuffing shake for Thanksgiving? Roasted salmon with spiced cauliflower in conveniently packaged bars? Or how about three meals worth of calories and nutrients in an easy to swallow pill?

Perhaps I read too many sci-fi and fantasy books. But if that is really how the future of food looks like, I think Ill just live off of fruit and veggie smoothies.

Why Is The Food Combining Hypothesis Unscientific

The food combining hypothesis is not scientific, that is, it does not hold up to the rigors of the scientific process. It is pseudoscience, with a tidal wave of modern science punching holes in the idea.

Food combining is not supported by credible scientists and doctors . And when I say credible, Im referring to scientists and doctors whove studied at accredited schools, and who abide by the scientific process, and who utilize the peer-review process to separate truth from wishful thinking and incorrect assumptions spun as common sense on the Internet.

Food combining doesnt stand up to the rigors of scientific scrutiny and what we know of human digestion has advanced greatly in the 170 years since food combining and Natural Hygiene came onto the scene.

In short, there is no credible scientific evidence that eating a meal with protein and carbohydrates together will cause any problems with digestions, enzyme imbalance, or produce toxic aftereffects. There is no evidence that fruits and vegetables cannot be digested together, or require different enzymes, and that mixing the two will cause health problems.

The mixing of fruits with vegetables, or protein with carbohydrate, has not been scientifically established as a cause or contributing factor in vitamin and mineral malabsorption.
