Healthy Superfood Smoothie Recipes

Did you know that many store-bought smoothies are very high in sugar and calories? I used to grab one for a healthy boost all the time when I was in my twenties not knowing that they were doing the opposite. Most store-bought smoothies use juice, way too much fruit and flavored yogurt. These ingredients can add up to your daily recommended sugar intake in just one drink! But the truth is that its much healthier and cheaper to make your smoothies at home.

Theres actually a simple trick that you can use to make healthier smoothies: Use less fruit, no fruit juices, and no flavored yogurt. Fruit juice are high in sugar and totally unnecessary for a smoothie. The same goes for yogurt if youre going to use it, which I do in the raspberry yogurt recipe below, then you only want to use plain yogurt with no added sugar or flavorings.

How To Freeze Spinach For Smoothies

Healthy Mango Smoothie Recipe… and it’s delicious!

Friends, whatever you do, dont buy frozen spinach and put it into your smoothies. The flavor will be ruined youve been warned. BUT, if you want to make sure you always have spinach in the freezer and handy for smoothies, there is another way.

Get fresh baby spinach from the produce section and then transfer the container it comes in into the freezer. It will keep for about 1 month and is as easy as grabbing a handful whenever youre making a smoothie. As long as you dont use too much, youll add lots of nutrients without impacting the flavor. This technique also works for kale, chard, and mixed greens, but its best to avoid using bitter or strongly flavored greens.

Blueberry And Spinach Superfood Green Smoothie

The Spruce

All-natural, vegan, low-calorie, and raw, this superfood smoothie is nutritious and delicious. Antioxidant-rich blueberries and iron-rich spinach will start your day off right. This drink doesn’t contain any sweeteners, but you can add a touch of honey or use fruit juice as the liquid if you like. Using a very ripe banana will naturally sweeten things up, too.

How To Make A Fruit Smoothie

Making a fruit smoothie is as simple as tossing ingredients in a blender and letting it rip, but we want to make sure you succeed every time, so heres our exact process:

  • Add liquid to your blender. I typically use unsweetened almond milk, but you could use any other kind of milk, fruit juice, or even just water.
  • Add in any fibrous foods. If you are adding in spinach or other greens, this is the time to toss them in.
  • Add in your frozen fruits and vegetables. I like to keep at least frozen bananas and frozen strawberries on hand for smoothie making. Any frozen fruit works!
  • Add any fresh fruits or veggies youd like to use. Here is where youll toss in fresh strawberries or an avocado half.
  • Top it off with your favorite nutrition mix-ins. Add protein powder, collagen, chia seeds, turmericwhatever youd like to boost the nutrition of the smoothie.
  • Blend away! I like to start my blender on low and then slowly ramp up to full speed. This makes sure everything is mixed well and the blades dont get stuck. I blend until the smoothie looks silky, and then I pour and enjoy.

    How To Make Smoothies Sweeter

Now, I know you’re probably wondering how the heck you make your smoothies sweeter then!

We all have varying levels of taste when it comes to sweetness. For me personally, as I’ve incorporated less sugar into my diet over time, I’ve gotten used to things tasting less sweet.

Here are some other sweetener ideas below:

    • applesauce
    • dates
    • Avocado

    Substitutions For Fruit Smoothie

Fruit Mixing in some pineapple or strawberries would be delicious in this fruit smoothie.

Yogurt Nonfat greek yogurt is a great way to add protein and richness to smoothies for a low amount of calories. You can substitute with dairy free yogurt or full fat yogurt. You can also skip the yogurt, but may need a little bit more milk.

Milk Any milk will work in this recipe. Almond, Dairy, or other non dairy milks will all work.

Protein Powder Protein powder isnt necessary but it is recommended for this recipe. The added protein will help keep you full, rather than this just being blended fruit . Any protein powder will work. We like this protein powder best.

Frozen Fruit You can substitute frozen fruit for fresh fruit. Substitute 1:1. Frozen fruit will result in a thicker smoothie. Fresh fruit will result in a thinner smoothie

Other Add Ins Feel free to add in other nuts or seeds to this recipe. Chia or flax seeds would make a great addition!

Greens We love to add a handful of spinach or kale to this recipe. You cant taste it and its delicious. You could also try this Apple Kale Green Smoothie or Immunity Smoothie

Frozen Cauliflower: Frozen cauliflower is relatively tasteless and helps thicken smoothies. Its also a great way to add in sneaky veggies. 1/4 cup cauliflower rice will blend nicely in this recipe.

Do You Add Sweeteners To Smoothies

I dont add any sweeteners besides fruit to my own smoothies, but sometimes my kids want them to be sweeter. I feel like the health benefits of smoothies allow me to add a little sweetener for the kids, so depending on the smoothie, I might add honey, maple syrup, more fruit, fruit juice, sweetened milk, or sweetened yogurt. Sweeten to your liking, but conservative is always best! You can always add more after tasting.

    Healthy Smoothies And Weight Loss

If you are drinking smoothies in an effort to lose weight, make sure to keep these points in mind:

    • Not all smoothies are healthy. Drinking smoothies alone will not help you lose weight. Healthy smoothie recipes can contribute to your weight-loss plans, but only if youre choosing low-fat, low-calorie, low-sugar ingredients.
    • Use portion control. Smoothies can contain more vegetables or fruit than you would eat raw and that means you are taking in more calories, carbohydrates and sugar than you think. Keep your smoothie at around 10 oz . If you make too much, freeze the extra portion for later.
    • Smoothies can leave you feeling hungry. Make sure your smoothie contains the right balance of ingredients. Adding protein and healthy fats will help make you feel full longer. But be careful as these additions can also make the calorie count go up. If you feel the need to add healthy fats or protein, then consider adding a quarter of an avocado , half a cup of Greek yogurt or a tablespoon of peanut butter .

Yes, you can lose weight drinking smoothies but it needs to be part of an overall diet plan. Read more about meal prep and weight loss here.

What Not To Add To Healthy Smoothies

There really aren’t too many things you shouldn’t be adding to smoothies, but I can say with confidence that sugar and ice are the biggest no-nos in my book.

First up, ice will totally water down your smoothies if you don’t drink them right away and you need a super high-powered blender to get a smoother consistency.

Second, you can get sweeter smoothies with natural ingredients don’t add calories or reduce the healthiness by adding sugar!
