Healthy Blueberry Yogurt Smoothie
Looking for an easy smoothie recipe that can be whipped up in five minutes on a school morning thats chock full of protein, fiber and potassium. My Healthy Blueberry Yogurt Smoothie recipe is perfect for busy mornings.
My kids prefer the fruits they love in the smoothies they drink. And they like to help blend it all up.
Toss in the protein powder for an extra boost or just skip it and stick to the protein-rich Greek yogurt. Toss in your favorite sweet fruits, add a splash of fruit juice or milk and turn on that blender.
My kids like the consistency of a frozen, slushy smoothie. Freezing Greek yogurt will not change the beneficial cultures of the yogurt.
I dont thaw the yogurt completely, just until slushy. Perfect for a breakfast smoothie.
I keep it simple. For this recipe I use vanilla Greek yogurt in the smoothies. I freeze the yogurt the night before.
Then I let the container sit in a pan of hot water for about 5-10 minutes before chunking it up with a fork.
An immersion blender is perfect for blending a healthy, quick breakfast and is easy to clean.
I like to use fresh fruit when its in season because it really tastes so much better than frozen.
When I use frozen fruit it is typically the banana because it helps keep the smoothie slushy. If using frozen blueberries use the small wild blueberries. They blend better.
After blending, drink it up before your smoothie thaws completely.
How To Make A Healthy Blueberry Smoothie
Blueberry smoothies are good for you, and this one also includes the perk of being completely and totally delicious.
Its bursting with fresh blueberry taste, yes, but what really sets this Greek yogurt blueberry banana smoothie apart is that its flavor is reminiscent of a slice of fresh blueberry pie with a creamy scoop of ice cream. Yum and YUM!
This smoothie is thick, luxurious, and craving-worthy, as any self-respecting pie imitator should be.
It also offers protein and healthy fats, so you can count on it keeping you full all morning.
What Should I Add To My Smoothie
While this creamy strawberry blueberry banana smoothie is plenty good as is, there are some fun add ins to try! These options either add flavor or health benefits to your smoothie so get creative and experiment to find what you like.
Flaxseed / Chia Seeds: Both are great sources of healthy fats and fiber with minimal flavor. Id suggest blending the flaxseeds into the actual smoothie and then sprinkling the chia seeds overtop, almost like sprinkles!
Hemp Seeds: Another great source of healthy fats and plant based protein too. You can blend these into the smoothie or sprinkle on top, either way theyre super easy to add!
Protein Powder While I personally dont use protein powder you can certainly add it to this smoothie. Just adjust the flavor as needed and find the balance that works for you. Suggestions from friends of mine who use protein powder include: Nuzest and Aloha, both are plant based / vegan too!
Nut Butter I looove to add peanut, almond, or cashew butter to my smoothies for extra thickness + flavor. You could use any nut / seed butter that youd like, my personal favorite for this smoothie is peanut butter though because its almost like a PB & J smoothie?!
Spinach If you want an extra boost, add some spinach. Id suggest starting with 1/4 cup and tasting along the way, the sweetness from the fruit should cover up the flavor of the spinach. Also, the smoothie color may change to a muted brown instead of purple so keep that in mind.

Tinker With Smoothie Basics
Although the recipe here is my most tried-and-true iteration, I am forever tinkering with the basics depending on the ingredients I have one hand. Here are a few swaps and substitutions I make all the time.
- Replace the avocado in this recipe with 1/2 of a frozen banana or several cubes of frozen mango. Youll end up with a similar creamy consistency, but a different taste!
- Use regular yogurt or plain kefir in place of Greek yogurt. It will have a slightly different nutrition profile and thinner consistency, but will be plenty tasty nevertheless.
- Use frozen spinach instead of fresh, cutting the amount in half and then adding a bit more to taste, if desired.
- The smoothie already packs in plenty of protein, but if you want to up the ante even more, add a scoop of plain unsweetened collagen peptides or your favorite protein powder.
- Add a tablespoon of nut or seed butter for extra calories and healthy fats.
- Boost the smoothie with a tablespoon of omega-3-rich chia or hemp seeds.
- Top the smoothie with a spoonful of granola, chopped nuts, or cacao nibs for a bit of crunch.

To make smoothies even easier, freeze fresh fruit into portions. You can even prepare smoothie packs and freeze them for a grab and blend smoothie option.
To freeze fruit for smoothies, rinse and chop fresh fruit into small pieces. Pat them dry then arrange, in one layer, on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Slide the baking sheet into the freezer and freeze until hard . The method for bananas is no different, simply peel them, slice and then freeze on the baking sheet.
When the fruit is hard, divide it between freezer-safe bags and keep in the freezer for your next smoothie.

How To Thicken A Smoothie
My biggest pet peeve with smoothies is when theyre watered down or too thin, I just prefer a thicker, more flavorful blend. Thats why this strawberry blueberry smoothie recipe calls for frozen fruit + ice + yogurt, it creates a super creamy and thick blend!
That being said, here are my best tips and tricks for a thick smoothie:
- For this Strawberry Blueberry and Banana Smoothie you can use 1/4 cup less almond milk for a thicker blend.
- Freeze your fruit! Either buy it pre-frozen or with something like bananas, set reminders if needed so that youre freezing them ahead of time. I usually freeze a bunch at once so that I have a little stash to pull from.
- You can technically use any type of yogurt in this smoothie but greek yogurt is by far the thickest option. If you sub for a thinner yogurt just make sure to add a few more pieces of frozen fruit or ice cubes. **The same goes for using a vegan yogurt since theyre often thinner as well.
- Optional: add a tablespoon of nut butter or chia seeds to your smoothie before blending. The chia seeds absorb extra moisture and will naturally make for a thicker smoothie while the nut butter just adds more depth of thickness to it.

Outside of that, fruits and veggies are packed with vital nutrients your body needs, and the yogurt adds protein to keep you full.
I have lost count how many blueberry smoothies Ive drank over the years. Blueberry smoothies arent the only smoothies I drink and obsess over. However, a blueberry smoothie in the morning is at the top of my list when it comes to breakfast.

What Can I Use Instead Of Banana In A Smoothie
Were only using half of a medium banana and the banana flavor isnt pronounced in this recipe, so Id recommend giving it a shot before you skip the banana entirely.
If you try it and can taste the banana, try freezing the banana first AND/OR using an under-ripe banana.
If all else fails, both avocado and mango have the same creamy factor, but both will change the flavor significantly.

How To Make A Blueberry Smoothie Without Yogurt
Smoothies are very easy to make, which may be why they are some of the most popular options for a light meal. The best part is that you can pack a lot of different nutrients into a smoothie. Fruits are full of vitamins and minerals that you need to stay healthy.
Step 1: Prep the ingredients and blender
First, you need a blender that is strong enough to blend ice or frozen fruit. Once you have your blender out, you will want to prep your fruits. Regardless of what fruits you are adding to the blender, you will want to make sure they are rinsed off. Next, make sure that all fruits are cut to an appropriate size to be blended in the blender.
Step 2: Add other ingredients to blender
Regardless of what you put in your smoothie other than the fruit, you will want to add it in at this stage. If you are using ice, start with only a small amount, as you can always add more if you need to later. Once you get everything in the blender, move to step 3.
Step 3: Blend!
Now, you should blend up everything that is in the blender. If you dont like the consistency, you can make it thicker or thinner at this point. This is also the stage where you can add more fruit or sweetener if you need to, as well. You can taste as you go to make your smoothie just the way you want it. Blend until completely smooth.
Step 4: Pour and enjoy
Add Ingredients To Blender
2. Now add the blueberries in a blender jar. Frozen berries work brilliantly, if you do not have fresh berries.
I always freeze blueberries and strawberries so that I can have a stock of them when they are not in season. Many times I have made smoothies and shakes with frozen blueberries.
3. Add 1 cup of lite coconut milk which has a thin to medium consistency . I also suggest that you add 6 to 7 wheatgrass strands for an extra boost of nutrients and lovely, slightly earthy flavor.
You could add your choice of any nut milk or even dairy milk or opt for a plant based yogurt or dairy yogurt.
TIP: In place of wheat grass, sub with 1 to 2 teaspoons of wheat grass powder or add about 1 tablespoon of protein powder. When I have fresh or homemade frozen spinach, I add some of the leaves to this smoothie.
4. Add ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract, or 1 to 2 drops of vanilla essence. Vanilla extract is less processed and therefore has a stronger vanilla falvor.

Tips For Making Blueberry Smoothie
Making a smoothie is as simple as blending up the ingredients in a blender. However, there are a couple of tips that will help you make the creamiest, smoothest Blueberry Smoothie.
- Always put the thin liquid in the blender FIRST! This will make the smoothie much easier to blend, as the blades will not get stuck on the solid ingredients. In the case of this Blueberry Smoothie, pour the milk of your choice into the blender before adding any other ingredients.
- You can use fresh or frozen produce for this recipe. HOWEVER, if you choose to use all frozen produce, you may need to add an additional ¼ cup to ½ cup liquid to incorporate the ingredients well.
- This smoothie is best served immediately, as the ingredients will begin to separate as it sits.
More Than Just Blueberries In This Smoothie
The foundation of the smoothie is blueberries, of course, which explains the vibrant color and deep berry flavor.
The smoothie gets its thick, creaminess from a combination of Greek-style yogurt and just enough avocado to give it luscious texture without impacting flavor .
A whole mandarin orange, a splash of maple syrup, and a dash of cinnamon round out the flavor and add a hit of sweetness. And since I never miss the chance to work leafy greens into my life, theres a half cup of spinach in there, too, which blends up without a trace.
