What Is The Best Liquid To Use In A Smoothie

Banana Smoothie Without Milk Or Yogurt

In my opinion, the best liquid to use for smoothies is milk or a milk substitute. Theyre healthier and help maintain the consistency of your smoothie without watering down the flavor.

I much prefer them over water or juice. Water tends to water down your smoothie too much.

Juice adds unnecessary sugar to a recipe that should be a healthy one. Plus, most smoothie recipes are sweet enough to taste good without the added sugar.

How To Make A Perfect Strawberry Banana Smoothie

Making a perfect smoothie is all about getting the right ratio. Not so thick that you cant actually blend the smoothie, and not so thin that it drinks more like milk that tastes like fruit than a smoothie.

The ratio should be just right for this easy smoothie recipe, but the nice thing about it is that its easy to adjust if youd like it a little thinner, or a little thicker.

To make it thicker you can do 2 things:

  • Use a frozen banana instead of a fresh banana.
  • Add more frozen strawberries or a bit of ice and blend again until you reach your desired consistency!
  • To make it thinner all you have to do is add a bit more liquid until its thin enough for the perfect sip.

But backing it up, lets go over the step-by-step of how to make this smoothie:

    • Starting with 1 ¼ cups dairy free milk, add all ingredients to a blender and blend on high until smooth and creamy. If the smoothie is too thick to blend freely use your blenders tamper or add a little more milk at a time until desired consistency is reached.
    • If youd like your smoothie a little bit sweeter you can add a bit of honey or maple syrup to taste.
    • Divide between two glasses and enjoy!

Why Do Most Smoothies Include Yogurt

Most people make smoothies in a blender, and there needs to be a sufficient amount of liquid in the container to ensure the blender blades will not get damaged. Yogurt is a popular choice to make up some of the liquid because it contributes to the overall creaminess of the smoothie as well as adding flavor and protein.

This recipe contains a quarter cup of chia seeds, which are loaded with antioxidants, protein, fat, and a TON of fiber! Just one ounce of chia seeds contain almost half of your fiber intake for the day, so this is a great smoothie to start you on the right foot.

Chia is also the star ingredient for making this smoothie super thick, so the longer you let it sit to absorb liquid, the more it will thicken up. For even more creaminess, you can swap the hemp seeds for flax seeds, which will help absorb some of the extra liquid as well.

If youre looking for an excellent liquid for smoothies that will thin them out, then onviously you wont want to use only yogurt. And many people dont like nut milks. My advice would be to try coconut water.

Coconut water is very popular, especially with people who are atheleticly inclined. Its been called natures gatorade. That is because coconut water contains a huge ammount of electrolytes. And its also healthy. Unlike many sports drinks that contain lots of added sugars, coconut water is all natural.

So, when you are making a smoothie for the gym, and you want that same electrolyte content that you get from sports drinks, but you want to avoid added sugar, then coconut water is a perfect choice.

I would caution about which brand of cocnut watrer you get. Avoid the cans of coconut anything as they have addatives. Stick with a natural coconut water. Brands like Zico, Harmless Harvest, etc The ones that you see sold in terapacks are best. Then make sure to check the sides and confirm that there are no added sugars in them.

One of the best reasons for substituting coconut water for something such as milk is that youre going to be getting the liquid without the fat, lactose, or unhealthy ingredients. Its all things considered an excellent alternative.

    More Dairy Free Smoothie Liquids

While the above liquids are more popular, I like to get creative with my liquid bases. Here are a few more super fun + delicious options:

Kombucha Im not kidding! This is a great probiotic option, and the skys the limit on flavors.

Fresh squeezed juice While 100% juice has natural sugar, it is still a higher sugar option. So remember that when adding it to your smoothie.

Coffee This base works great in smoothies including cocoa or cacao, nut butter, vanilla, you name it. Need a caffeine free option? Just use strongly brewed decaf coffee to enjoy the flavor without the buzz.

As you can see, dairy milk is far from the only liquid base for smoothies. Dont be afraid to get creative mix + match any of these bases until you find your fav.

Can You Make A Smoothie Without Any Liquid

Yes, you can make a smoothie without any liquid! Fruit contains a lot of natural juice so if you use enough fruit in your smoothie, you wont need any additional liquid.

To make the perfect thick smoothie use plenty of soft frozen fruit and vegetables.

Most fruit and veg will need to be chopped into small pieces before you can put them in the blender. Soft fruits such as banana, mango, and strawberries do not need chopping just break them up with your hands or a fork.

The reason why you dont need any water is that the fruits are mostly made up of juice. So when you put them into your blender without any additional liquid it the fruit will create its own liquid that is perfect for smoothies.

How To Make An Apple Pear Smoothie Without Milk:

    • Add 1 apple, 2 pears, 1 ripe banana, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 cup ice cubes, 1/2 cup water in a high-speed blender.
    • Process all the ingredients until smooth. This usually takes time duration of 30 seconds and a minute, depending on your blender speed.
    • Transfer the smoothie into a glass and garnish it with some thin banana slices, a few chia seeds, and hence your drink is ready to serve.

    Liquid For Your Smoothie:

This smoothie recipe does not feature any dairy or dairy substitutes, but I find the bananas help give the smoothie that silky, creamy factor just fine! But do feel free to swap out the juice for your choice of milk if you prefer.

If you do choose to use juice, fresh is definitely best. I used freshly squeezed orange juice for mine. You can use whichever juice is your favorite, and you can also use store bought juice.

If youre making your smoothie with store bought juice, just be careful with the sweetness. Pre-made juice is often sweeter than fresh.

Whenever I use store bought juice, if its a brand Im not familiar with, I like to add half the juice called for, blend, and taste the smoothie. If its too thick, but perfectly sweet, Ill thin it out with some water. If it can still use some sweetness, Ill add the rest of the juice to get the conistency I like.
