How to Make a Smoothie @ Tropical Smoothie – FXBG, VA

This tropical island smoothie is inspired by one Ive tried at Tropical Smoothie Cafe in the past. We dont have one near me, so making it at home is something Ive gotten in the habit of doing.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe has two of these tropical green smoothies, the Island Green Smoothie and the Detox Island Green Smoothie.

The regular Island Green contains spinach, kale, mango, pineapple & banana. Their detox green smoothie includes all of the above plus naturally-sweetened fresh ginger.

What Do You Put In A Fruit Smoothie

I have a bit of a love affair with smoothies. And the thing that I love the most is that the sky is the limit when it comes to what ingredients you use.

For a fruit smoothie, I like to use frozen fruit when possible. Frozen fruit is readily available at the grocery store, but it is also super simple to freeze fruit yourself at home, too. To keep things basic, you really only need a liquid you can use anything from water to milk to coconut milk to fruit juice and the fruit. If you are using fresh fruit, or if you like a thicker or icier consistency, youll want to add a bit of ice, too.

How To Store This Bahama Mama Smoothie

Tropical Smoothie

So, as I mentioned, this Bahama mama tropical smoothie recipe will make 1 large serving or 2 smaller servings. And odds are you’ll finish the whole thing off in one sitting, but if you don’t, it actually stores really well.

You can store the smoothie in an airtight container or resealable jar in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just take it out and have a chug whenever you need a quick vacation.

Then, whenever you want to enjoy it, you can toss it back in the blender with some ice.

With that said, if you want to keep this smoothie for longer – or make a bag batch to always have on hand – the best way to store it is in the freezer. The 2 best ways to store it are either in ice cube trays or an airtight container. Stored in one of those ways it will last for up to 3 months.

Then, whenever you want to drink it, either thaw it in the fridge to soften up or toss it right in the blender with some milk!

Tropical Smoothie Recipe: Optional Add

If you’d like to add some nutrition boosters to this tropical smoothie, here are some suggestions that you can add before you begin blending:

  • More fruit. Strawberries, papaya, raspberries, guavas, etc. can be used in place of some of the mango/pineapple.
  • Greens. Adding 1-2 cups of spinach or power greens, won’t effect the taste or texture of this tropical smoothie at all. It will change the color to green, but it’ll taste great and have a bonus serving of veggies!
  • Kale. If you’d like to add kale, I recommend adding 1 cup. Kale has a stronger flavor than spinach and could effect the taste.
  • Protein powder. Adding a scoop of vanilla protein powder will both enhance the flavor and deliver a healthy dose of protein
  • Chia seeds. a nutritional powerhouse that can be added to this tropical smoothie. I recommend adding 1-2 TBS and drinking the smoothie immediately.

Pineapple Mango And Banana Smoothie Recipe

I was considering going with tropical smoothie, but I personally find descriptive titles more tempting so coconut pineapple banana smoothie it is. Its not often that every single ingredient of a recipe is listed in its title, but in this case, what you see is what you get. Literally: coconut milk, pineapple and bananas.

Instructions. Add ice cubes, pineapple, mango, strawberries, banana slices, yogurt, pineapple juice, orange juice, and coconut milk to a blender. Cover and process on medium speed for about 30 seconds, using the tamper as needed. Increase to high speed for 15 to 30 seconds until thick and smooth.

Tropical Smoothie It may be a Monday or a Wednesday, but you can kick-it off feeling like a vacation with this bright smoothie that tastes like the tropics. Coconut water is also a fun liquid choice to use in your smoothie blends since its a natural source of electrolytes like potassium, yet is lower in sugar and calories than fruit juice.

Almost All Tropical Smoothie Cafe Locations Are Franchises

If you’ve ever been to your local Tropical Smoothie Cafe, you may not have known that you were actually walking into a small business. While all Tropical Smoothie Cafe locations share roughly the same look and feel while offering the same products, the vast majority of them are franchises. CEO Charles Watson says that the company is “99.9 percent franchise,” which means that most of the locations are owned independently.

Franchising offers multiple benefits to a business as a whole. Management can grow a company without having to invest too much money, and the risk of growth is lower than with other business models. However, that doesn’t mean that things have always been easy for Tropical Smoothie Cafe. The COVID-19 pandemic was difficult for restaurants across the industry, but as Tropical Smoothie Cafe franchise owners are essentially small businesses, they were liable to be especially hard-hit. Luckily, they were still able to receive support from corporate, such as lowered franchise royalties.

The Peanut Butter Cup Smoothie Is The Best Way To Indulge

Just because Tropical Smoothie Cafe is all about offering healthier options, that doesn’t mean that customers can’t indulge when they visit. A Tropical Smoothie Cafe Was Linked To A Hepatitis Outbreak

Unfortunately, it hasn’t all been sunshine for Tropical Smoothie Cafe. In 2016, an outbreak of hepatitis A was linked to strawberries used in the restaurant’s smoothies. The majority of the infections were discovered in Virginia, but people in several other states, including North Carolina, Maryland, and Oregon, also fell ill. More than half of them ended up being hospitalized with a highly contagious liver infection.

The CEO of Tropical Smoothie Cafe at that time, Mike Rotondo, apologized for the mishap in a YouTube video statement. “On August 5, the Virginia Department of Health contacted us about a potential link between hepatitis A cases and frozen strawberries from Egypt,” Rotondo said. ‘We voluntarily and immediately removed all of those strawberries from all of our cafes, and we have sourced new strawberries for every location.”

Luckily for Tropical Smoothie Cafe, the company seems to have recovered relatively well from this incident, despite the bad press in 2016 .
