How To Make A Smoothie

A smoothie is so much more than blended fruit. It’s an art with all of its different elements blending perfectly together. Just in case these 29 smoothies aren’t enough, here is our guide to making the perfect smoothie.

Pick your fruit.

We chose strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and bananas to be our base, but any combo of fruit is great. Make a tropical smoothie of pineapple, mango, and banana or add blueberry and peach to switch it up a bit for a summer twist. Aim for about 3 cups of fruit.

Fresh or frozen fruit?

For smoothies, frozen fruit is best. It blends up thicker than fresh fruit and gives you a really cold smoothie to enjoy after blending. If you don’t have frozen fruit, freeze your fresh fruit for 30 minutes before blending or add about 1 cup of ice and blend until smooth!

Add a thickener.

We use unsweetened Greek yogurt in our smoothie, but peanut butter, almond butter, or vanilla yogurt are all great options. Traditionally about 1/2 cup is ideal. If you prefer thinner smoothies, you can either lessen the amount of thickener or skip it all together.

Choose a liquid.

Almond milk is great for the added nutty flavor, but coconut milk pairs well with a tropical smoothie and gives a richer, creamier flavor. Whole milk or fruit juice also work well. 1 1/4 cup of liquid makes the perfect consistency for our preference. If you skipped the thickener, use less liquid as well.

Throw some add-ins in.

Four: Add Ice And Blend

The amount of ice you use depends on how thick you want your smoothie recipe to be. Start with about 1 cup crushed ice for a fairly thick smoothie that is still drinkable with a straw. Omit the ice if using frozen fruit or if you want the smoothie to be thinner and less cold. Cover and blend until nearly smooth. Pour into a cup or thermal to-go drink container and slurp up every last drop.

How To Make Healthy Smoothies

Making healthy smoothies is a much simpler process than you would imagine, and this post will show you how to make 7 different kinds of healthy smoothies that you’re going to love!

I think many people have misconceptions about what healthy smoothies really are. I know when I was younger, I thought that healthy smoothies were the ones you got at Booster Juice. Sadly, I would order a large smoothie from there or Starbucks after a night of partying and think I was replenishing my body with healthy food. Little did I know these smoothies were often filled with sugary frozen yogurt and can contain up to 460 calories .

To make genuinely healthy smoothies, you have to be careful with the ingredients you use. This post will educate you on how to choose the highest-quality ingredients to ensure that you’re getting the nutritional benefits you should be getting with fruit-filled smoothies.

As long as you stock your freezer with frozen fruit and keep a few handy base ingredients on hand in the fridge each week, smoothie making is super easy and nutritious.

What Do I Use To Sweeten A Smoothie

All of these smoothies here use frozen fruit as a base, which adds a nice baseline of sweetness that you can build on if your tastebuds would like. My recommendation is to blend up your smoothie without any added sweetener, then taste. Add in honey or maple syrup to taste. Many times, I dont need to add anything! Another great natural option for sweetening: pitted Medjool dates. Throw in one or two of those bad boys and let the blender do its thing. Youd be amazed at how sweet your smoothie will be!

Can I Make An Orange Smoothie Without Banana

Yep! You can try one of the following:

  • Replace the banana with ½ cup plain Greek yogurt and some ice cubes.
  • Substitute half a ripe avocado and a handful of ice for the frozen banana. Youll also want to add a touch more sweetener.
  • Use canned pineapple or pears and a handful of ice cubes instead of the banana.

Equipment For Healthy Smoothies

Having the right equipment is key to making healthy smoothies.

  • The Vitamix personal series is great for making just one or two smoothies at a time
  • So is the Magic Bullet or Nutri Bullet the only hang up here is that I find I have to replace these models once every couple years or so because the motor eventually burns out
  • The Vitamix Ascent series is my fave though it’s self-cleaning so you aren’t left with a ton of mess and it’s perfect for if you’re prepping 3-4 smoothies at a time. It can tear through anything to make the smoothest smoothie, even ice!

You can of course get a mid-range blender too, really any blender will work. But if it takes 3 or more tries to get that smooth texture without all the lumps, it can be a frustrating experience.

See how often you’re going to be making smoothies and if it’s going to be a consistent thing for you, your best bet is to invest in a high-powered blender that can minimize the time you spend making healthy smoothies.

Best Blenders For Smoothies

OK, youve got all of your smoothie ingredients prepped and ready to go, now how are you going to blend them up?

The key here is powerful.

You want to use a blender capable of completely mixing up all of the ingredients until they are smooth and creamy.

Here is a list of the best blenders for making fruit smoothies:

  • Nutribullet A wonderful personal-sized blender option. Make sure you use the larger cup in order to fit all of the ingredients without going over the max fill line.
  • Ninja Blender is also another great option!
  • Vitamix The most powerful of the traditional blenders and will give you a silky smooth smoothie every time. It is more of a splurge, so only spring for this if you make smoothies, soups, or sauces on a regular basis.
  • Food Processor Sort of a last resort, but will work if you dont have another blender on hand!
  • The Right Blender For The Perfect Smoothie

How to Make a Smoothie at Home?

First things first, if youre using an old blender that struggles with effectively emulsifying your ingredients, it may be time to invest in one that will get the job done. Theres nothing worse than chunks of spinach floating around in your smoothie that was intended to be disguised with a creamy texture.

Although there are many good blenders on the market, your best option is to choose one that has a reputation of producing silky-smooth blends, leaving zero chunks, and doesnt freeze up when blending is the goal. Colin Sapire, the founder of Beast Health, explains what separates regular blenders from those made for creating the ultimate smoothie. An easy start is to search for a brand that has great reviews and one created to offer a successful smoothie-making experience every time.

The Beast Blender was meticulously designed and engineered to make perfect, nutritious, silky smooth blends due to the design and technology, Sapire says. This includes: 12-rib vessel design for increased turbulence and blending efficiency optimized stainless steel gearing to ensure maximum power and torque transferred from the motor to the blade six-blade edges crafted from Grade 301 stainless steel electronically-controlled blade system with a thermal safety shutoff 18,000 rpm blade speed sensing a 1-minute blend program with intervals that assure optimal blending of your favorite ingredients coupled with a 1000-watt motor.

    Add Extras To Your Liking

There are so many amazing things that you can add to a smoothie to increase its nutritional bang for your sip, though you dont have to add anything at all. I keep all kinds of superfoods around and throw in what sounds good. Ill normally add 2 or 3 extras to my smoothie each morning. Different things that I like to add include: hemp seed hearts, flax seeds, chia seeds, spirulina, organic brown rice protein powder, pea protein, and/or cacao nibs. Other people also add things like goji berries, matcha powder, and bee pollen, but I havent dabbled in those yet.

Add 1 Cup Of Fruit And/or Vegetables

About 1 cup of fresh or frozen fruit and vegetables will contain the bulk of your smoothie’s flavor. If you decide to go fresh, you should add a cup of ice to your smoothie however, I find that freezing the fruits and veggies beforehand gives you a thicker texture to work with without needing to add ice, which can water down your drink if you use too much.

#SpoonTip: 1 banana will count as 1 cup of fruit, but you can use half a banana along with 1/2 cup of other fruits and vegetables if you want to vary your ingredients.

    Adjusting The Blender Speed

Its best to gradually ramp up the speed on the blender. Start with medium speed for about 30 seconds. This gives the blades the chance to gradually break things up without burning out the motor. Use a plastic tamper to help push down all of the ingredients into the fast-moving blades at the bottom of the cup.

Turn the speed to high for 15 to 30 seconds for final processing. This is when I add any extra liquid or ice needed to help with blending. If the smoothie doesnt easily whirl and move, it needs a little more liquid, add small amounts at a time to keep thick but sippable consistency.

    Step : Choose Your Equipment

Theres more than one appliance you can use to make a smoothie, but the most popular go to is a blender. Theyre powerful enough to break up ice and pulverize fruits and vegetables and theyre capable of creating that just right consistency. KitchenAid offers blenders that can take on tough ingredients and deliver smooth results.

Another option is a food processor. Keep in mind that this method can be messy, especially if the appliance you own is not able to lock in liquids. KitchenAid offers food processors in a range of colors and sizes to help unleash possibilities in the kitchen.

If youre making an individual smoothie, immersion blenders can be powerful enough to do the job. On top of being a more economical option, these hand blenders have the added advantage of being easy to clean and easy to store. KitchenAid offers a complete line of immersion blenders to help fuel your kitchen creativity.

In addition to a good appliance for blending your smoothie, measuring cups and measuring spoons are the only other equipment youll need. Gather your tools and ingredients before you start blending to help make the process flow smoothly.

    Use Your Milk Of Choice

    Make Perfect Smoothies & More

I have used and loved all kinds of milk for smoothies, including normal cows milk, raw cows milk, and lots of plant- and nut-based milk like rice, almond, coconut, and cashew. When buying nut milk, make sure the carton is marked unsweetened. You dont really need the added sugar when you are using fruit in your smoothie. I love cashew milk its super creamy and delicious. I most often use almond milk in the carton or a coconut-almond blend in the carton. Use what you can find in your area.

    When Using Only Fresh Fruit

If frozen fruit is not available, thats okay! Fresh fruit still adds body to the smoothie as the ingredients become pureed. However, you wont get that cool chill. Add in ice cubes, start with ½ cup to 1 cup of ice , add more until the desired consistency is reached.

Just be aware that the more ice used, the more the flavor will dilute as the ice melts.

Add A Handful Of Leafy Green Vegetables

Green smoothies may be scary at times, but adding a handful of leafy greens to your smoothies, like spinach and kale, can contribute incredible health benefits without compromising flavor or consistency. How else do you expect to squeeze vegetables in your diet in a way that actually tastes delicious?

What Blender Should I Use For A Smoothie

HOW TO MAKE THE PERFECT SMOOTHIE, AT HOME

I truly believe a good blender is worth it. I got a Blendtec a few years ago, and Ill never go back to a normal blender again. A good blender will whip you up a thick and delicious smoothie with no chunks in about 45 seconds.

And, if youre adding leafy greens, a good blender will make sure theyre blended up nicely and have a great texture! Mine gives me a count for how many times Ive used it, and its well past the 800 mark. So, its definitely worth the investment, in my opinion, especially if you have a family full of smoothie lovers!
