Whats The Best Way To Make A Simple Green Smoothie Not Taste Too Green

PediaSure Sidekicks Fruit and Veggie Smoothie mix, Strawberry Banana

Ah, this is my favorite topic when it comes to smoothies because I know that this can actually be a challenge! First, avoid the impulse to add a LOT of greens. A loosely packed handful is plenty. Second, my favorite way is to keep a bag of greens like spinach or kale in the freezer. This way, you never have to worry about the greens going bad AND freezing them knocks down the green flavor.

Fruit And Veggie Smoothie Recipe

Start your day with a punch of flavor and nutrition with this delicious fruit and veggie smoothie recipe!

What do you do to try to stay healthy during cold and flu season? I try to do the usual like getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, washing hands frequently and all that good stuff. But food intake is also important.

Fruits and vegetables are chock-full of nutrients to boost our immune systems and keep us healthy. I like to start my day with a smoothie to make sure I am getting a bunch of fruits and vegetables. first thing in the morning.

This is my typical daily fruit and vegetable smoothie, but it is easy to add or subtract ingredients according to what you have on hand.

For example, right now Cuties / Halos are in season, so I have been throwing one of those into my smoothie each day. If you are a person who likes drinks on the sweet side you can sweeten up the drink by adding a small spoonful of frozen apple juice concentrate. There isnt much nutritional value in that and it does add calories, but if it is the difference between drinking a smoothie and NOT drinking one then go for it!!

Heres a look at the simple process involved in making this simple smoothie. Scroll down to the bottom of this post for the full information.

  • Gather your ingredients and place them all into a blender.
  • Start the blender on low, then gradually turn the speed up and blend on high for about 30 seconds or until its completely blended and you see no chunks of green.
  • TIP: Add 1 tablespoon hemp seeds or nut or seed butter for extra healthy fats and protein.

Add the liquid to the blender first followed by the veggie. Blend this first so that the veggie easily gets pureed and is nice and smooth. Then add the fruit and other ingredients to the smoothie and blend again! This will help you to not end up with an unexpected chunk of veggie in a sip of smoothie.

Can I Store This Smoothie For Later

When made with nut butter and some hemp seeds, which helps hold the ingredients together for a longer period of time, Ive stored this smoothie in the fridge in an airtight container for 6 hours. My toddler then drank it and was happy. I wouldnt advice storing it any longer than that and when possible, serve it after storing.

TIP: Should you have leftovers, you can aways freeze them into a freezer pop mold and serve as a frozen treat on another day!

Easy Veggies To Add To Smoothies

Youd be surprised how easy it is to add vegetables to smoothies. Cauliflower is one of my fav additions, because its creamy, and virtually tasteless. Go for the frozen kind with this ingredient, as that kills the taste. Beets not only add a fun color, but also folate and vitamin C. Carrots are slightly sweet, and pair well with a variety of fruits in smoothies.

I typically buy all 3 of the above veggies fresh, then dice them up and freeze them. That way I can easily scoop them into my next smoothie.

In the distant future, lets say the year 3020, I would assume food would be consumed differently. Everything would revolve around efficiency.

Instead of real food, wed all be eating pills, powders, and shakes of sorts. Turkey and stuffing shake for Thanksgiving? Roasted salmon with spiced cauliflower in conveniently packaged bars? Or how about three meals worth of calories and nutrients in an easy to swallow pill?

Perhaps I read too many sci-fi and fantasy books. But if that is really how the future of food looks like, I think Ill just live off of fruit and veggie smoothies.

Whats The Best Way To Serve A Smoothie To Kids

Try it using a straw cup, a little open cup, or a reusable pouch. Depending on the age and mood of your child, they may find one more suitable than otherswhich is to say they may play less with one or another. For my kids, we like the reusable pouch or a half full open cup with a straw best.

TIP: This green smoothie doesnt have any added sweeteners, so its also a great one to give to babies if you use unsweetened nondairy milk.

How Can You Make A Creamier Smoothie

Try to add avocado because its ideal for adding creaminess to your smoothie. Avocados mild flavor counterfeits its nutritional wallop. As an alternative, you can add frozen yogurt, ice cream, or vanilla yogurt for more creaminess. Achieving the right texture smoothies needs a good blend of liquid and solid ingredients.

    How To Make A Smoothie

Making smoothies is very simple and takes roughly 5 minutes from start to finish.

  • Add Ingredients: Place all of your ingredients into a blender.
  • Blend: Press the smoothie button on your blender or start on low speed and increase to high speed for 2-3 minutes. Do not under blend, you want all of the pieces of fruit and veggies completely smooth.
  • Add More: Add more milk or liquid if the smoothie is too thick. I have found that toddlers and kids like a thinner consistency of smoothies since it is easier to drink out of a straw.
  • Drink: Pour into a cup with a lid and serve.

    Why Add Veggies To Smoothies

Im probably not shocking anyone by saying this, but vegetables are good for you.

They are full of vitamins and minerals. Even though we know we should eat vegetables, they are something many people struggle with enjoying and/or getting enough of on a consistent basis. This is why I loved adding them to the blender! Adding vegetables to smoothies is the perfect way to start getting into the healthy habit of adding more plants to your diet in a way that is delicious. Blended with naturally sweet fruit , the veggies almost melt into this tasty drink that is downright delightful.

    Medical And Dental Issues

Grapefruit juice is contraindicated if you take certain medications. Talk to your physician or pharmacist if this is a concern.

If you have any thyroid issues, compounds in raw cruciferous vegetables can interfere with your treatment. Again talk with your physician because thyroid and other health problems can be effectively improved with certain fruits and vegetables. Cruciferous veggies include kale, broccoli, cabbage, bok choy, cauliflower, turnips, arugula, Brussels sprouts, radishes, collard greens, kohlrabi, rutabaga, and watercress.

Another medical concern is diabetes. The old rule of thumb is that anyone who is diabetic should stay away from fruit and sweet veggies such as carrots, beets, etc. Recent research has overturned this with the discovery that many fruits and veggies have compounds that actually help regulate sugar levels better than cooked food. This is exciting news for diabetics so talk to your physician right away!

There is concern about the issue of fiber. Fresh juice separates pulp from juice. The pulp is primarily insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber remains in the juice. Nonetheless, juice provides less fiber than the whole food unless one returns the pulp to the juice. For those who need more fiber in their diet, blended drinks may be a better choice since they do not separate pulp from the juice. Pulp is also added calories so for weight loss, juice is a better choice.

    Tips For Making Green Smoothies

Have you had a chance to check out my post about prepping smoothies and how to increase their nutrition?! If not, its a great resource! Here are a few more tips I like to share in regards to making the best creamy, healthy green smoothie:

  • Use frozen fruit. Using frozen fruit is best as it helps keeps the smoothie cold and thick. Sometimes ice doesnt blend as well, so its best to skip unless absolutely necessary. If you only have fresh fruit, try adding 1 cup frozen cauliflower.
  • Add more liquid. Dont be afraid to add more liquid if your smoothie is too thick or wont fully blend. High powered blenders tend to blend frozen fruit much better, so if you have a regular or personal size blender, you may need to add more milk.
  • Start low, go high. Start the blender on low speed, then gradually increase to high to help blend all ingredients. Finally end with the blender on low speed.
  • Swap your greens. Feel free to use kale instead of spinach if thats what you have on hand.

How To Encourage Your Toddler To Drink All Of The Smoothie

There are a few great ideas you can use to encourage your toddler to drink all of the smoothie.

    1. Use a straw: Toddlers love straws, so using one will make it more fun for them to drink the smoothie. Plus, theyre more likely to drink it all if theyre sucking on a straw.

    2. Make it fun: Adding some fun, colorful ingredients can make the smoothie more appealing to your toddler. Try adding a few slices of strawberries or a sprinkle of cinnamon for an extra touch of sweetness and color. Drinking your own smoothies with your kids can help make it fun, too!

    3. Give them choices: Letting your toddler choose which fruits and vegetables go into their smoothie can help keep it interesting. If theyre involved in the decision-making process, theyre more likely to be excited about drinking it.

    4. Make it Into a Smoothie Bowl: My kids wont drink smoothies much, but make it a thicker texture and put in a bowl with a few mini chocolate chips sprinkled on top?? That will be gone in an instant.

One way you can get your toddler to eat all the smoothie is to make it into a smoothie bowl. All you need to do is thicken up your smoothie by adding less liquid, then top it off with some healthy toppings like granola, chopped nuts , berries or even mini chocolate chips.

I also find that adding chia seeds and letting them set for a few minutes will help thicken up a smoothie that is too thin.

Your toddler will love the fun new way to enjoy their favorite smoothies!

Best Fruit & Veggie Packed Smoothie Recipes

I rarely let a day pass without making some sort of veggie smoothie. Theyre just so easy, healthy and very refreshing in the Texas heat! I drink them every day which is why Im rounding up all of my favorite recipes so you can try yourself!

Smoothies are a healthy way to pack a ton of fruits and vegetables into your diet in a delicious tasting way. Over the years, Ive nailed down the perfect formula to get a smoothie that is creamy, sweet and wont make your blood sugar spike!

Why Use Frozen Fruits In Smoothies

Pediasure – will we feed this to our baby?

    Its so convenient!

Most supermarkets sell frozen smoothie packs these days.

Theres no need to wash or cut the fruits. Everything is done for you already. Its a huge timesaver!

You wont even have to defrost the fruits before making smoothies. Just open the bag, add some to your blender and youre good.

Just because its convenient doesnt mean its less healthy!

Fruits are picked and frozen at peak ripeness. Studies show again and again that frozen fruits retain at least as many vitamins, minerals, as fresh fruits. Some fruits can even retain more vitamins when theyre frozen than when theyre bought fresh.

Using more frozen fruits also means less spoilage.

Frozen fruits are good for months, instead of just days. You can easily enjoy your favorite fruits at any time of the year.

Using frozen fruits actually makes your smoothies taste better.

Some people like to use ice cubes in their smoothies, I like using frozen fruits. A chilled smoothie simply tastes better, theres no question about it. Save the ice, and add some frozen fruits instead.
