The 4 Worst Bottled Smoothies

What bottled smoothies to avoid? “Everything else. Just kidding. It’s hard to pick just one to avoid because so many bottled smoothies are full of filler juices,” concedes Moon. Below, smoothies that may seem misleadingly healthy but are actually loaded with sugar, empty calories, and more non-nutritious fillers.

Tips For Using Organic Produce With Smoothie Packs

The best guide for knowing what produce to buy organically is The EWG List, published annually. When shopping for green smoothies on a budget, use this guide to keep my produce clean, yet still doable.

The produce on the Clean 15 list can be more safely purchased as non-organic, though feel free to purchase these ingredients organically grown as well.

The foods on the Fresh 15 list either have a shell or skin that protects the fruit underneath, or the farming practices do not genetically modify or use the same chemicals as the first list. If buying all organic is not an option for your budget, use these lists as your guide to the safest, most delicious smoothie ingredients.

Meal Planning For Your Dog

It takes some planning to have a smooth feeding routine. My dogs hear the sound of butcher paper unwrapping no matter where they are!

Here are some ways I simplify the process

  • I make up appropriately-sized packages of muscle meat, organ mix and raw meaty bones for the freezer.
  • I often partially thaw bigger pieces of muscle meat. This includes heart or tongue. Then, I cut them into one ounce pieces. .
  • I spread the cut pieces out flat on the butcher paper to refreeze. That way, they dont stick together when I put them back in a large container.
  • Another helpful practice is partially thawing organs and cutting them into 1 oz pieces or blending them together. I often include a little bananafor prebiotic power.
  • I try to have each days meals ready thawed in the refrigerator.

For my dogs breakfasts, I mix the muscle meat pieces and organ blend alone. Then I add a small amount of pulverized vegetables. I also ferment the veggies in whey for the probiotic boost.

Remember to label everything for the freezer!

Tips For Making Smoothie Packs:

  • Invest in good tools. Not everyone has the budget to invest, but when youre ready to, heres what I recommend:
  • High-speed blender, like a Blendtec .
  • Baggie Holders. I have these and they make filling smoothie packs SO easy!
  • Kitchen Scale. Perfect for weighing food so you get exactly what you want .
  • Dont freeze the liquid Add your liquid at the time of blending your frozen smoothie pack. You will need the liquid to help the smoothie pack become a smoothie. See below if youre starting with frozen liquid.
  • Put frozen cubes of milk or juice in the blender ahead of time to thaw. The best smoothies start with some sort of liquid . Definitely use the frozen cubes of leftover milk or juice, but toss them in the blender either the night before or even just 10-15 minutes before you blend.
  • Add spices! A sprinkle of cinnamon or vanilla powder or even nutmeg can make some amazing flavor combinations.
  • Keep a smoothie tub in the fridge. This is for any uneaten pieces of banana or applesauce that toddlers and new recipes tend to leave behind. Collect the extras and either make a smoothie when its full OR freeze the fruit for a future smoothie. Be sure to follow the other tips for the smoothie packs! , blueberries, raspberries, citrus, and avocado.)
  • Add your powders last. To prevent getting them stuck at the bottom of the jar, make sure you measure your powders last after youve put in your frozen smoothie pack into the blender.

Best Supplies For Making Frozen Smoothie Packs

You dont need a lot of supplies to make these frozen smoothie packs, but I have found there are a few things to have that make it easier. Ill also give options for bags to store your smoothie packs in other that single-use plastic.

Containers/Bags: I love reusable bags like Ziptop and Stasher. They are definitely more expensive, and so if you arent ready to invest in those, here are some other options:

    • Single-use ziploc bags if you are just using these for smoothie packs, you can actually reuse them! When you are ready to make your smoothie, empty the contents of your bag into your blender, rinse and reuse!
    • Glass mason jars pint size mason jars are a great size for an individual smoothie. They freeze well and are airtight. The downside is they take a lot of freezer space and it can be difficult to remove the smoothie ingredients because they can stick to the glass.
    • Freezer Deli Containers these stack well and are pliable to get your smoothie ingredients out easier.
    • Reusable Silicone Bags these are a non-branded silicone bag that is much less expensive than other brands. They stand up on their own which makes filling them really easy!

    Ice Cube Tray

I like to use an ice cube tray to freeze add-ins like nut butters, Greek yogurt, and even honey. My favorite silicone ice cube tray is pictured below. Each cube holds about 1 1/2 tablespoons and inverts easily to pop out whatever is inside!

How To Make Frozen Smoothie Packs

  • Buy Ingredients. I recommend buying in bulk if you can. Places like Costco or Sams club typically sell frozen fruit for a better price that other grocery stores in smaller packages. I have also found Trader Joes to be a good place to buy frozen fruit.
  • Portion Smoothie Ingredients into Containers. Decide what type of container you are going to use for your smoothie packs and portion ingredients based on how many servings you want each pack to hold. Add everything but the liquid in each recipe.
  • Flatten and Remove Air. If you are using bags for your smoothie pags, try to flatten them out and remove as much air as possible. This will help them fit better in your freezer and also keep them fresh longer.
  • Label. Label each smoothie pack with a sharpie. Write the recipe name and also how much liquid to add when you are ready to make the smoothie.
  • Freeze. Lay flat in your freezer and freeze up to 3 months before making.

Your Dog Deserves The Best Raw Food

I hope this article has inspired you to support your local farmer and butcher.

Theyre both jeopardized by the growth of big business and the rise of ready-made foods. Every town once had a butcher shop, but local butchers are becoming few and far between. So buying meat through local farmers helps them thrive and support their families.

And by using all inedible bits, you as the end consumer can honor the existence of the whole animal.

The freshness and quality of meat will benefit your dogs health too!

Freezer Smoothie Packs Ready To Go When You Are These Smoothie Packs Make Mornings Or A Nutritious Snack On The Go Easier They Are Customizable And Can Be Packed With Extra Protein Or Be A Substitute For A Less Nutritious Treat

    Everbowl (10) Ready

School is out, summer is here. Before school got out I was counting down the days. And now that it is, all I can think is, Why is it I always cant wait for school to be out? Dont get me wrong, I am loving having my kids home, and I am not ready for them to go back yet. But I have a tendency of thinking life is going to slow down, and get easier because I wont be dealing with carpools, and homework. But my reality is far different.

Usually when school gets out, that is when the real busy begins. That busy is more fun than the school year busy, but no less tiresome. And without the structure of the school day, sometimes summers mean odd meal times and sugary, low nutrition snacks.

In an attempt to combat that this summer, I decided to take a day and make smoothie packs so we would have tasty, nutritious smoothies ready to go at a moments notice. They are still sweet and yummy, so my kids love them, and I can add in all the extra goodies to make them at least somewhat good for my kids.

And oh man we had so much fun making Freezer Smoothie Packs. The kids love to customize their smoothies to their preference. My son, for example, hates bananas, so you wont find one in his packs. My daughter prefers more greens, and loves adding in extra veggies with her fruit. Her fruit of choice is berries. And me??? Well, I like mine to be bright green, and totally creamy. So you will find lots of spinach, light colored fruits , and a half an avocado.

What Makes Some Smoothie Options Unhealthy

Even Moon admits it is no easy feat to pick the best store-bought smoothies: “Honestly, most of what you find on grocery shelves includes a lot of filler juices, and it’s challenging to find smart options.”

Sugar, in particular, can be a big concern when selecting a bottled smoothie.

“While smoothies can usually be a great way to get in nutritious micronutrients like vitamins and minerals, the main distinguisher here is sugar content,” states Rachel Fine, MS, RD, CSSD, registered dietitian, and owner of To The Pointe Nutrition.

“Many bottled smoothies contain a heaping dose of sugar . While we definitely want to reduce the overall consumption of added sugar throughout our day, a large dose of sugar can lead to blood glucose spikes soon after consumption.”

    Popular Substitutions & Additions

    • Freeze them in a mason jar. For each of the recipes below, I recommend using 4 pint-sized jars for storing the smoothie packs, which you can then use for drinking the smoothies. Tightly seal and set in the freezer until ready to use. This also makes for one cool cup when youre ready to drink from me!
    • Add protein powder. For more of a meal, you can add in some protein powder to your smoothie. This is a great way to fuel up before or after a workout.
    • Substitute fruit. If you dont like one of the fruits listed in a recipe, feel free to substitute it for another that you do like. Just keep in mind that this may change the flavor and nutrient profile of the smoothie.
    • Sneak more leafy greens into your diet. If youre looking for a way to sneak in some extra greens, add a handful of spinach or kale to any of the smoothies below. You wont even taste it, I promise!

Tips For Making Premade Smoothie Packs

  • Break up large chunks of fruit before blending. Sometimes when these bags freeze, the ingredients can form chunks. Use your hands to break up large pieces to help the blending process will go more smoothly.
  • Add Ice. If you prefer a more frozen consistency on your smoothies, add ½ cup of ice along with your liquid of choice before blending.
  • Run packet under warm water before blending. This will ensure any seeds or oats stuck to the container are loosened up before adding the contents to the blender.
  • How To Freeze Smoothie Packs

To freeze smoothie packs, simply place all of the ingredients into a freezer-safe bag or container, and store them in the freezer for up to three months. To save space, I recommend laying the freezer bag flat after sealing and spreading the ingredients out. Place each bag in the freezer flat and wait until frozen. Once frozen, you can use an empty soda box with the top cut off to store and organize all your smoothies in an upright position.

When youre ready to make your smoothie, simply add the contents of the bag to a blender with your liquid of choice and blend until smooth.
