We’ve all heard the saying: breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But for many of us, it’s also the hardest to pull off quickly and healthfully.

And that’s one reason our team has been on the smoothie train lately. There’s certainly nothing new about smoothies, but blenders have certainly come a long way since my smoothie heyday in the late 90s, and interesting frozen fruits and veggies are now more accessible than ever!

But still: a busy weekday morning comes along and gathering, measuring and blending all those ingredients can take more time than we realistically have. So we’re into this timesaving solution: smoothie packs!

Preparing These Smoothies With A Normal Blender

If you don’t have a bender that can safely screw onto mason jars, you can simply do the same thing using a freezer bag or even simple sandwich bags if you will be using them up quickly.

Just grab the bag out of the freezer and dump the contents into your blender with a cup of milk, blend, and you’re done!

Since I made up a bunch of different flavors, we arent getting bored and it is fun to try a new one every time. The hardest part is deciding which flavor to enjoy!

*Make sure that you follow safety directions and only use jars compatible with your blender! Other glass jars may fit on your blender, but many are not strong enough and could possibly break while blending.

How Long Can You Freeze Smoothies In The Freezer

If stored properly in a freezer-safe ziploc bag, these freezer packs will last up to 3 months in the freezer. When ready to enjoy, you can either thaw the night before or blend straight from the freezer. If blending straight from the freezer, you might need to add a little more liquid to help balance out for the frozen produce.

Ingredients for chocolate cherry smoothie pack:

  • 1 cup pitted frozen cherries
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 1 banana sliced into pieces
  • 1 cup plain yogurt

Life can get hectic. We all have those weeks when the only way to make it through the day is with a drink in hand. Im talking about cool, quick, refreshing smoothie recipes. Smoothies are an easy way to pack in a speedy and nutritious breakfast before you take on the day. And when you really want to put your morning routine into hyperdrive, a little prep work in advance can make this easy meal even easier.

Make Your Smoothies Taste Amazing

There are a few keys for making delicious smoothies every time:

  • Use natural sweeteners: super ripe bananas with tons of brown spots are my favorite, but you can also use soaked Medjool dates to sweeten your smoothie! Other in season berries & fruits like mango and pineapple will provide the perfect sweetness. We recommend using 1 banana or 3 soaked Medjool dates to sweeten your smoothie.
  • Experiment with simple swaps: many fruits are easy to swap! Feel free to use different berries than a recipe calls for, such as mango or peaches in place of pineapple .
  • Dont be afraid to add veggies: a boost of greens from 1-2 cups of spinach/kale, or even ½ cup of frozen cauliflower or shredded frozen zucchini should not alter the taste of your smoothie. Promise!
  • Try some cozy spices & flavor boosters: youll notice that some of my smoothie recipes include warming spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, richness from cacao powder, extracts like vanilla and almond extract and flavor from tahini, peanut or almond butter. These add flavor without additional sugar, so try a sprinkle of cinnamon or a tablespoon of cocoa powder or your favorite nut butter next time!

    Investing In A Good Blender

    I believe that investing in a high-powered blender is important to making delicious smoothies . Dont worry though, you can still use an inexpensive blender and get great results however, a high-powered blender will help to break down the fruits and veggies to get that perfect creamy smoothie consistency. Here are a few different options with a variety of price points:

    • Vitamix: I have this series and love it. Its very powerful and makes the creamiest smoothies.
    • Ninja: I know many people who use a Ninja blender and love it. It comes with single serve cups for easy, on-the-go breakfasts!
    • Nutribullet: for a super affordable blender thats perfect for one, the Nutribullet is a great option.

    Big Batch Smoothie Recipe

    You can do this with any smoothie recipe, but if you love the pineapple-coconut combo, I highly recommend giving this one a try. And if you have an aversion to putting green things into drinks, trust me when I say that this drink puts the classic piña colada to shame.

    Richly coconut-y and creamy, this drink is one you want to sipno spinach detected. Worst case scenario : come Friday night, youve got a great vehicle for your rum and a healthier take on a summery cocktail.

    Will Kids Like These Make

    Yes! My kids love making smoothies!

    I loved that they were eating all of these healthy fruits, however, they used to make a big mess with them. Fruit spills, they dont put things back in the freezer, and worst of all, they start getting crazy adding sugar, chocolate syrup, and candy to make crazy concoctions. The pre-made jars work great for the kids to have lots of choices and still feel like they are making it. However, they aren’t making the mess or putting in the junk that they did in the past.

    How Long Can You Keep A Fruit Smoothie In The Fridge

    You can store your fruit smoothies in your fridge for a maximum of 3 months if you freeze them in freezer safe smoothie containers.     This is where smoothie freezer packs save the day! Meal prepping your smoothies with freezer packs is embarrassingly easily because you only have to pull out all of the individual ingredients once.

    Not only that but you can add pretty much all of your smoothie ingredients to the freezer packs except the liquid and just dump them into the blender whenever youre ready to serve.

    What To Put In My Smoothie Pack

    I recently had the pleasure of talking to Catherine McCord, author of the new book Smoothie Project and founder of Weelicious. She is queen or all things smoothies, and is a big fan of doing smoothie prep in advance.

    She recommends not getting overwhelmed with what to put in your smoothie, but to try and aim for getting in at least one fruit, one veggie, and a protein each morning. A few of her favorites: frozen cauliflower, frozen banana or avocado for creaminess, dates for sweetness, spinach and kale, berries of all kinds, and chia seeds or protein powder .

    How To Prepare Smoothies

    When you are ready to prepare the smoothies you simply pull out your desired smoothie bag and your milk of choice. I personally also add a vanilla flavored plant based protein powder like this one to my smoothies.

    Its a way for me to get a little extra protein in my diet and in my kids diet since he is such a picky eater. If your kid is a picky eater but likes smoothies and needs the extra protein in their diet I highly recommend adding a protein powder to your smoothies.

    Youll pour a cup and a half of milk into your blender Then add the fruit and any protein powder. Blend for 30-45 seconds or until completely smooth.

    Pour into glasses and enjoy.

    Are Mason Jars Safe For The Freezer

    Mason jars are a great, inexpensive and eco-friendly storage option. Mason jars are safe for the freezer as well, but you have to be careful in order to prevent the glass jars from cracking or shattering in the freezer. I like using these 16 oz mason jars for freezing, but you can also use 1 quart plastic storage bags for smoothie freezer packs.

    If adding liquid, dont fill the jar all the way up, but up until about an inch or two from the rim. Liquids expand when frozen and this will keep the jar from cracking up in the freezer. Defrost your mason jars in the fridge or at room temperature. I wait to add the milk to the smoothie until its time to blend my smoothie and freeze everything else.

    Smoothies are the perfect way to start the morning. By serving my family a smoothie first thing in the morning, I know everyone has been nourished with the best of the best nutrients. No matter what happens that day, I know we have enjoyed a healthy dose of fruits, veggies, probiotics, healthy fats, and even sometimes nuts/seeds and chia or flax seeds.

    Add Extras When Blending

    If you want to add dry ingredients like chia seeds, protein powder, dried spices, etc. to your smoothies, I find it works best to add when blending rather than to the bags. Unless you like digging stubborn chia seeds out of plastic bags.

    But flavor enhancers like fresh herbs and spices can definitely go into the bag before freezing. My favorites: fresh basil, mint, cilantro, parsley, ginger and turmeric.

    Lately, I havent been working out, eating like I should. Lets call it happy complacency. But last week, I got the fire under my butt and decided that theres no time like the present to get back in the gym, and go back to my healthy eating habits. How many times have you said that youre going to go on a diet, and then failed two days later ladies and gents? Ive found the best way to circumvent the diet flip flop is meal prep, and prayer. Let me share #alittletrick that helps me get through the week.

    I drink a protein shake in the morning, and post-workout. To cut down on the time it takes me to make my smoothies, I make twelve bags of smoothie produce. Thats two per day, for Monday through Saturday.

    Grocery List: A bag of raw almonds A bushel bananas Two containers of strawberries Four containers of blueberries A large container of spinach A large container of kale A bag of green apples A bag of chia seeds

    And whatever else you want to include in your smoothies. I tend to stick to these because theyre generally low in sugar, high in fiber, and colorful berries are high in antioxidants. I then cut up flavor combinations, like all berries, strawberry banana, all greens , I then throw in the raw almonds and chia seeds for fiber and healthy fat. After that, I freeze em, and in the morning, pop in the Vitamix along with my favorite protein, which happens to be Isoburn Protein Powder. Check out some of my combos below.

    Will The Smoothies Separate When Defrosted

    After 8 hours, no. If you leave it to defrost over 24, it might. Justin once left one in the fridge for two days. It separated. But, it still tasted fine. Just give it a good shake.

    How to Meal Prep a Week of Healthy Protein Smoothies for Weight Loss!

    Theres a saying, Fail to plan, plan to fail. I totally believe thats true. Im kind of a procrastinator, something Im constantly trying to combat. Sometimes that procrastination creeps over into my diet as well.

    I love green smoothies. Love them. I blend up a smoothie just about every dayexcept for the days when I failed to plan. Thats why freezer smoothie packs are an essential part of my meal planning each week.

    I stock up on fresh greens, veggies and fruit and combine them in easy freezer packs that I can pull out to use each day. Easiest breakfast ever!

    Like most moms, Im always trying to get my kids to eat more veggies. Who am I kidding? Im also trying to eat more veggies!

    Im normally not a fan of hiding veggies in food-I want my kids to learn to like the taste of the veggies. However, when they can easily be hidden in a yummy, fruity smoothie, Im all for it.

    I find the easiest veggies to add are leafy greens, frozen cauliflower florets and/or shredded carrots. Freezing the greens makes them easier to blend and they also lose volume, so you can use more than you would if you were using fresh. Bam! Each quart-size freezer smoothie pack will serve 2 adults or 3-4 kids.
