  • How To Begin Including Smoothies In Your Diet

Start simple. You might be excited to eat these nutritious foods, but be careful to add only one new ingredient at a time. For example, if you tolerate bananas and almond milk then make a banana almond milk smoothie. From there, add blueberries. Did that work well? Great! Now add a handful of spinach. You get the gist.

While its tempting to become a creature of habit and eat your same favorite smoothie every day, I encourage you to mix things up. A key part of healthy eating is variety so youll want to incorporate all the colors of the rainbow. Plus, eating the same food every day when the gut is unwell can increase your risk of becoming sensitive to it.

    Lifestyle Changes For Crohns Disease

Diet is a major factor in managing Crohns disease symptoms, of course, and Ill get into that below, but as you read above, the food you eat is just one piece of the puzzle. The mind/body aspect of healing is the rest!

Stress can seriously affect the gut and flare up autoimmune disease symptoms. And the gut is what needs healing! So naturally, we want to be able to de-stress.

Some new practices you can try bringing into your lifestyle can be meditation, skin brushing, lymphatic self-massage, yoga or gentle stretching, other exercises, or breathwork. Also consider the stressful aspects of your daily life, whether they are physical, mental, or emotional. Maybe youre not able to do strenuous exercise, or take on too much at work, or maybe there are toxic relationships in your life that you need to let go of. These things matter!

As you heal from Crohns, you must be your first priority, and incorporating self-care practices can help you stay centered, calm, and focused on your healing journey.

A lot of the digestive work of breaking up fiber has already been done, so your body doesnt have to work as hard to do the rest. Blending up your ingredients, especially those that may be tougher to digest on their own, breaks them down even more than you could by chewing . Once they get to your stomach, the food particles are small enough to move through your digestive system without much issue.

Fruit And Vegetable Smoothies Are Easy To Digest

Most individuals with active or inactive IBD can tolerate fruits and vegetables when the rough fiber is removed or broken down in the blender before ingestion.

Thats why I often recommend fruit and vegetable smoothies to my IBD patients, both during flares and in remission.

Blending fruits and vegetables breaks down the tough-to-digest fiber but leaves the nutrients intact.

    The Nutritional Benefits Of Smoothies

Smoothies are one of the best ways to get your body the nutrition and calories it needs, says Burak. Theyre really versatile too. Not only do they double as meals or snacks, but the ingredients can also be tailored to a persons specific nutritional needs and tastes. Best of all, for people with Crohns disease, many foods are better tolerated in smoothie form.

Blending begins the process of breaking food down, so smoothies give your digestive system a little bit of a break, says Burak. Plenty of her clients cannot eat whole fruits and vegetables or nuts and seeds. But throw it in a blender, she says, and they can get all the same minerals, vitamins, and other nutrients without the GI distress.

One of those important nutrients is fiber, which is found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts. It is thought to help people with Crohns lower their risk of flares, according to a study published in December 2015 in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

How To Build A Better Smoothie

While you can toss just about anything in a blender, there are ways people with Crohns disease can maximize the nutritional benefits of smoothies and help reduce unwanted symptoms.

Gayatri Saldivar, RDN, who specializes in digestive disorders and food sensitivities, and Alicia Connor, RDN, who is also a chef, came up with the following guidelines for building a better smoothie. Keep in mind that because IBD affects everyone differently and people have their own preferences and tolerance levels you should use these as jumping-off points. They also note that you can easily turn a smoothie into a soup if you crave something warm: Just sub bone broth for the liquid and use savory ingredients.

Dairy and Gluten Free Recipes During My Crohns Flare

With a little creativity, even the simplest of ingredients can create delicious dairy and gluten free meals, snacks, or even desserts. For those of us with a chronic gut disease, it may require blending foods you normally eat whole or cooking foods you usually eat raw to allow your digestive system some time to rest. During my latest flare of Crohns disease, I relied on this recipe.

Check out Allysons personal story of living with Crohns disease in her blog post HERE.

*Note: Each body is different and tolerates different foods. These foods are healing to my body during a flare, but you should consult with your medical professional regarding your dietary decisions.

    • 1 ½ bananas, sliced and frozen
    • 1 Cup Frozen Blueberries

How To Make My Banana And Mango Smoothie

Ulcerative Colitis & Crohn’s Recovery Recipes: Mango Lassi Smoothie
  • Peel and chop mango and banana
  • Add to blender and pour in almond milk
  • Peel ginger and finely chop into small pieces
  • Add any optional extras
  • Blend until smooth and serve
  • A question you might ask is: what about the other half of the mango? I personally don’t really batch make my smoothies: I make them and drink straight away. This is because I’ve read about nutrients potentially depleting if they’re left out and also they can often turn strange colors in the fridge. However, what I’ll often do in the warmer months is to make a batch and freeze the leftovers into ice lolly/popsicle molds! This works particularly well with coconut milk and makes a cheap and tasty iced treat!

A note on the nutrition facts: this recipe calculator would not recognize almond milk so I’ve substituted it for soy milk to provide this nutritional information. If you are using coconut milk, the fat content would obviously be much higher.

Canned and cooked fruits are often low in fiber, but they can contain high amounts of sugar, so eat them in moderation.

    What Is Crohns Disease

By definition, Crohns disease is an autoimmune disorder. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks its own organs because it thinks they are foreign invaders. During a Crohns disease attack, which is commonly referred to as a flare, the disease is active, and it can attack anywhere along the gastrointestinal tract, which runs from the mouth to anus. This may cause swelling and inflammation anywhere in the digestive system, which leads to malabsorption of nutrients, diarrhea, fistulas, mouth sores, abdominal cramping and pain, hair loss, skin problems, and weight loss. Medications are often prescribed to treat the inflammation associated with Crohns disease. Other pharmaceutical treatments include immunosuppressants to reduce the impact in which the immune system attacks itself. But for many people, food can be used as medicine.

What Blender Is Best For Making Smoothies

10 tips for Juicing for Crohn

For most people, any old blender will do. But, if you have GI symptoms or plan to add whole nuts, seeds, or raw fruits or vegetables with thick skins and/or seeds then you might need a high-speed blender. A high-speed blender, like a Vitamix, will really pulverize those tough-to-digest nuts, skins, and seeds.

Americas Test Kitchen tested several mid-priced blenders to see how they make smoothies and crush ice, among other functions. The winner was Brevilles Fresh & Furious. Smoothies are very smooth, and theres even a dedicated green smoothie button that completely blends fibrous ingredients into a silky smooth drink. Perfect for someone with an inflamed gut! Plus, its reasonably quiet and compact.

If you dont have a heavy duty blender then stick to blending softer fruits, vegetables and smooth add-ons, like nut butters versus whole nuts.

    Reasoning Behind The Ingredients

Many people with UC, including myself cant eat strawberries or raspberries because of the seeds. And that is where blueberries come into play! Blueberries have so many health benefits. • Increased motor function.

    Maintain A Food Diary

A food diary is where you write down everything you eat and how you feel after eating it.

One reason for weight loss in Crohns is that people start avoiding eating because certain foods trigger their symptoms. A food diary can help you identify those foods and then eliminate them from your diet for an overall better eating experience.

Here is a list of foods you should generally avoid:

    • Processed foods anything that comes in a box or bag should be avoided
    • High-fiber items
    • FODMAPs this stands for fermentable oligo-di-monosaccharides and polyols. Foods rich in FODMAPs may cause diarrhea, nausea, and bloating. However, FODMAPs are mainly harmful in patients with irritable bowel syndrome, so before you drop them from your diet, consult a nutritionist or your doctor
    • Fatty foods

To maintain a healthy weight, you should replace these foods with items low in fat and fiber. Examples include cooked vegetables, eggs, bananas, white bread, and skinned potatoes. The list is huge, so consulting a nutritionist is a good idea.

How Else Can It Help My Health

The chia seeds are great for getting a dose of gently absorbing soluble fibre and are also a source of omegas. Blending them ensures theyre not too tough to digest.

Banana also has soluble fibre which is much gentler on the stomach. Remember this type of fibre is quite easy to digest

Hemp Protein is a great source of non-dairy protein and omega 3 too. It can be a little tough to digest at first, so Id recommend starting at a teaspoon and then building up.

    Almond Milk provides calcium.

Cashew Nut Butter is a good way to increase your intake of nuts and fat .

If you cant have nuts usually as theyre too solid, you might find that when theyre blended in nut butter, theyre fine.

You can use any decent blender or smoothie to make this drink. I personally use my Optimum Vacuum BLENDER which works particularly well for making batches of smoothies
