Dr Oz Shares 4 Ways To Strengthen Your Immune System

As cases of coronavirus continue to grow across the country, Dr. Mehmet Oz offered some simple tips on TODAY about how you can strengthen your immune system.

Oz kicked things off by demonstrating with Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb how a simple change in greeting friends and family can help lessen the spread of bacteria, offering them a fist bump instead of a handshake or hug.

“Handshake passes the most bacteria,” he said. ” high-five is only half the bacteria of a handshake, but a fist bump is only one-tenth.”

Oz also highlighted important areas of focus when it comes to keeping your immune system strong: sleep, exercise, supplements and a healthy diet. Here are a few specific things you can do to stay healthy.

The Question Of Whether Antioxidants Can Help Is Slightly More Complicated

Alas, any claims that masturbation can improve your immunity or protect you from Covid-19 are overblown. Its true that one study found that men had higher white blood cell counts when they were sexually aroused, and during orgasm. However, there is no evidence that this translates into protection from infections.

There is one way that the practice might protect you by keeping away from other people. On Twitter, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene recently reminded their followers that, in the age of Covid-19, you are your safest sex partner.

Theres no need to stock up on antioxidant pills

The question of whether antioxidants can help is slightly more complicated.

As part of the inflammatory response, white blood cells release toxic oxygen compounds. These are something of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, they can kill bacteria and viruses and stop them from being able to make more copies of themselves. On the other, they can damage healthy cells, leading to cancer and ageing and wearing out the immune system.

To stop this from happening, the body relies on antioxidants. These help to control those unruly oxygen compounds and keep our cells safe.

And we get some of our reserves of these compounds from our diets. Brightly coloured fruits, vegetables and spices tend to contain the most, because antioxidants are often pigmented: they give carrots, blueberries, aubergines, red kale, turmeric, and strawberries their hues.

Faq’s And Expert Tips

How do you thicken a smoothie bowl?

The key is the perfect ratio of frozen and fresh ingredients to liquid. Frozen fruit helps make the smoothie thicker, while some fresh ingredients and a small amount of liquid help the smoothie blend. To make a smoothie thicker, we suggest adding more frozen fruit or a banana. We suggest starting with a small amount of liquid. You can always add more if necessary, but you may find that the smoothie will blend well without it.Do NOT add ice to a smoothie bowl. It will just make your smoothie grainy and watered down.

What should you add to make a smoothie sweeter?

We suggest using a natural sweetener, like medjool dates, agave, pure maple syrup or raw honey. Start with 1-2 teaspoon and add more if desired. When using dates in a smoothie, it’s best to soften them in warm water for about 10 minutes before blending, otherwise they may not blend well. Be sure to drain and remove the pit before adding to your blender.

How do I get a smoothie bowl to blend easily?

Instead of adding more and more liquid, my best tip is to slightly soften the frozen ingredients before blending. Frozen fruit blends SO much better when it’s not rock hard. You can either defrost at room temperature for about 15 minutes, or microwave for 30-45 seconds before blending.

What can I top my smoothie bowl with?

Pretty much anything! My favorite toppings include fresh berries, nut butter, coconut, granola, chia seeds, hemp seeds, banana, pumpkin seeds, chopped nuts, etc.

How To Meal Prep Healthy Smoothies

Immune Booster Green Smothie

Smoothies are a meal prep star! Its so easy to measure out and chop your ingredients, then place them in a zip top freezer bag. Pop the bag into the freezer and then pull it out the morning you want to use it, dump directly into the blender and get it combined. Youll be enjoying your smoothie in no time at all. I love that this avoids lugging out my cutting board and chopping all the fruit on a busy weekday morning. Before I load up my freezer bag, I label it and include the steps, too.

If youve already made your smoothie but you have leftovers you can pour the leftover smoothie into ice cube trays and put it into the freezer. Then simply pop your cubes out and lightly blend before serving.

Are Smoothies Good When Sick

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states that while there are no guaranteed smoothies that will cure an illness, helping support your immune system with nutrient-dense foods cant hurt.

Vitamin C alone wont cure a viral illness, but it will give your body the tools it needs to be able to battle it out. Same with the other vitamins I discuss below, there is no cure-all smoothie or drink.

But it is important to make sure you feed your body the nutrients it needs to be able to work at its best level. Smoothies are definitely a great way to do just that!

Healthy Ways To Strengthen Your Immune System

Your first line of defense is to choose a healthy lifestyle. Following general good-health guidelines is the single best step you can take toward naturally keeping your immune system working properly. Every part of your body, including your immune system, functions better when protected from environmental assaults and bolstered by healthy-living strategies such as these:

  • Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.
  • Get adequate sleep.
  • Take steps to avoid infection, such as washing your hands frequently and cooking meats thoroughly.
  • Try to minimize stress.
  • Keep current with all recommended vaccines. Vaccines prime your immune system to fight off infections before they take hold in your body.

How To Make These Immune Boosting Smoothies

Give Your Immune System a Boost with these Delicious ...

These immune boosting smoothie bowls are super easy to make.

Start by prepping all of your ingredients. The only ingredients that need a bit of extra prep are the citrus fruits.

To prep fresh citrus for a smoothie, we suggest supreming the citrus, which is a method that removes the bitter pith and peel so you just get the sweet, juicy pulp.

Use a sharp knife and carefully slice off both ends of the orange , revealing just a bit of the flesh. Then, use the knife to completely remove the peel in long vertical strips.

When the peel is removed, carefully use a paring knife to cut between each slice’s membrane to remove each segment.

Next, simply add all ingredients to your blender and blend until smooth. You may need to scrape down the sides once or twice to make sure the smoothie is fully blended.

Practice good sleep hygiene, exercise and try to mediate. Meditation can help to reduce stress on your immune system.

“Something as simple as a five-minute yoga tactic,” he said. “Go sit on the toilet seat, put it down you’re not going to the bathroom sit there, quiet yourself and just realize that it’s OK. No one will bother you there.”

What Vitamin Is Best For Your Immune System

There are 3 main vitamins when it comes to giving your immune system a boost. The Cleveland Clinic suggests getting adequate amounts of Vitamin C, B6 and E to help support a healthy immune system.

Vitamin C This is the best immune-boosting vitamin. Being low in Vitamin C can actually make you more susceptible to getting sick! Your body does not store Vitamin C, so it is essential to make sure you get your daily dose to help keep your immune system in tip-top shape.

Vitamin B6 This is a vitamin that is essential to biochemical reactions in the immune system. Your body cannot produce it, so you need to get it from food or supplements. Luckily this vitamin is found in many different foods!

Vitamin E This vitamin is full of antioxidants, which help your body to fight off infections. This is also easily consumed in many different types of foods.

Improve Immunity With Herbs And Supplements

Walk into a store, and you will find bottles of pills and herbal preparations that claim to “support immunity” or otherwise boost the health of your immune system. Although some preparations have been found to alter some components of immune function, thus far there is no evidence that they actually bolster immunity to the point where you are better protected against infection and disease. Demonstrating whether an herb or any substance, for that matter can enhance immunity is, as yet, a highly complicated matter. Scientists don’t know, for example, whether an herb that seems to raise the levels of antibodies in the blood is actually doing anything beneficial for overall immunity.

Consider Taking A Vitamin D Supplement

Oz suggested adding a few supplements to boost your defenses against illness.

“Supplements have never been shown to beat coronavirus, however there are some tactics that will slow down the progression of viruses in general,” he said. “So ideas that work well generally are vitamin D, which you get from the sun, but this time of year you’ve got to take it as a supplement.”

He also recommended vitamin C, zinc and elderberry supplements, as well as getting vitamin C from healthy sources like leafy greens, salmon and berries.

Adding More Color To Your Diet Is Easy With Healthy Smoothies

Immune health is a hot topic. But the truth is that there is no one food or supplement that can boost the immune system, says Rye, New Yorkbased Malina Malkani, RDN, the creator of Solve Picky Eating and a media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Instead, its important to eat a well-balanced diet that includes a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and legumes, and nuts and seeds. This way, you can be sure youre getting all the essential nutrients that support overall health and normal immune function, such as protein, zinc, and vitamins A, C, and D, Malkani says.

That said, eating a well-balanced diet is often easier said than done. In fact, only 1 in 10 adults get the 1½ to 2 cups of fruit and 2 to 3 cups of veggies that are recommended per day, according to November 2017 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

If you struggle to get enough fruits and vegetables in your diet, smoothies are a tasty, convenient way to boost intake, Malkani says. Plus, if you dont enjoy the bitter flavor of certain vegetables , blending them with fruits, spices, and different types of milk can help make them more enjoyable to consume. And if access to fresh fruits and veggies is limited, frozen versions are just as nutritious and give smoothies a great texture, Malkani adds.

To incorporate more immune-supporting nutrients into your diet, try one of these tasty smoothie recipes.

    Blueberry Banana And Mint Smoothies

Blueberries are total superfoods. Theyre packed with antioxidants and are believed to boost the immune system as well as improve brain function such as memory retention, learning and motor skills. Keep in mind that fresh, frozen or freeze-dried blueberries are more nutrient-dense than those that have been cooked, canned or bottled as sometimes they lose nutrients during those processes. This yummy smoothie is packed with the little blue superfood, and its gluten-free!

    Kale Tomato And Celery

Recipes for drinks that helps to boost your immune system

Kale is a staple in many green juices, but the Kale Mary Tescos take on a bloody Mary is truly one of a kind.

Instead of cutting the taste of kale with sweet fruits, this recipe uses tomato juice, adding more than enough vitamin A.

Adding some spicy horseradish to this recipe may also provide anti-inflammatory benefits, according to some research. Blend it up for a drink thatll awaken your senses.

Strawberries and kiwis are other healthy options to include in a vitamin C-packed drink. Since it takes about 4 cups of strawberries to make 1 cup of juice, you may want to blend these fruits into a smoothie rather than a juice.

We love this recipe by Well Plated, which includes skim milk. Milk is a good source of protein and vitamin D, which is hard to come by in juices that use only fruits or vegetables.

Many people are deficient in vitamin D, which is largely found in sunlight and in smaller amounts in animal products. Healthy levels, achieved through sunlight, diet, or supplements, reduce your risk of respiratory infections like pneumonia or the flu.

Some recent research suggests a connection between vitamin D deficiency and infection rates and severity. Clinical trials are needed to determine whether it has the same effect on SARS-CoV-2, the new coronavirus.

Not only is watermelon rich in vitamin C and arginine , but it also can help relieve muscle soreness. Muscle soreness is a common symptom of the flu, especially in older adults.
