In the pursuit of that ever-so desirable summer beach bod, I found myself committed to trying the 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse by JJ Smith. The cleanse is a 10-day detox of processed foods, dairy, meat, and caffeine to give your body a much needed break and allow it to work on others things AKA burn fat.

More substantial than a juice cleanse, the green smoothies are based with kale, spinach and other leafy greens and are then mixed with various fruit combinations, which make the smoothies quite yummy unlike their bright green appearance. The best part of the cleanse is that is not a starvation diet. In fact, it is encouraged that you snack between the smoothies when you are hungry. Some allowed snacks include crunchy vegetables like carrots, celery, cucumbers, apples, raw unsalted nuts, peanut butter, hard boiled eggs, and plain greek yogurt.

This 10-day adventure was said to be a challenge and one of the hardest things you can do. The benefits are not even going to show up until after the first three days on the cleanse. However after that hump, youre promised to feel more energized, sleep better, have less cravings and bloating, and of course, shed some pounds. JJ clearly states that this is not an end all solution. The cleanse is meant to reset your body and encourages you to continue eating healthy by incorporating smoothies into your daily routine. Read on to hear about my experience.

Have you ever wanted to try a juice or smoothie cleanse? I know I have, but I wasnt sure where to start. There is so much information available in print and on the web that it can be a little overwhelming. The 10 Day Green Smoothie Cleanse book by JJ Smith is a great guide and resource to help you from start to finish.

The author, JJ Smith, is a nutritionist and certified weight loss trainer. She shares sound information and advice on what a cleanse means, how it will benefit you, how to get started. Unlike other books and resources, she also offers tips and information on what you can do after the cleanse to achieve and maintain optimal health. I like that she includes detailed instructions on preparing for and conducting a full 10 day cleanse. This includes a shopping list, over 100 recipes, and tips to help you succeed. This book covers the why, what, and how to help you improve your health.

The recipes included with the book are really good terrific. I juice and make smoothies regularly. You can never have too many recipes. One of my favorite recipes was the Chocolate Cherry Smoothie with greens, almond milk, cherries, bananas, cinnamon, and cacao powder. The kid-friendly recipes were a hit with my children. One of them was the Blackberry Almond with greens, almond milk, banana, blueberries, blackberries, and dates.

What Is A Cleanse Why Do We Need To Do It

This is the first thing that JJ Smith highlight in her book. Apparently, most of us a heavily infested with toxins that accumulate in our fat cells.

We are gathering toxins through harmful smoke and fumes in the atmosphere, cigarette smokes , oily foods, sweetened food, etc.

The presence of these toxins caused a myriad of problems: bloating, constipation, indigestion, low energy level , headaches, digestion problems, and so on.

JJ Smith present a sort of questionnaire and asked the reader to rate themselves. The questionnaire has all the problems related to toxin presences in ones body.

Having a high score means you have many problems due to toxins and is highly recommended to undergo cleansing and detoxification. I scored somewhere in the middle .

Spicy Tuna Taco Cucumber Bites

TO MAKE: Peel 1 cucumber. Slice width-wise into about 1 1/2 inch slices. Carve out some of the center to create a bowl. Using a teaspoon helps with carving. Set aside. In a bowl stir together 1/2 cup tuna, 3 -4 Tablespoons cashew dip, 1 teaspoon chili powder, generous pinch of cayenne, 1 teaspoon cumin, 1 teaspoon cilantro, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon onion powder. Add sea salt and black pepper. Taste and adjust seasonings to your liking. Spoon filling into cucumber cups.

The Reasoning Behind 10

The book says that the first step in losing weight is detoxification, to remove toxic overload from the body. Toxins stored in fat cells are difficult to get rid of through dieting alone. You must first detoxify the body. Thus, the most effective weight-loss programs should focus on both fat loss and detoxification, which lead to overall improved health and wellness. Raw greens can heal the body. You will detoxify your body through elimination of certain foods for ten days and reprogram your taste buds to desire healthy, nutrient-rich foods. The author states that after you complete the cleanse, you will never have to count calories or follow complicated or expensive meal plans or measure food again, as your body will naturally crave and desire healthy, natural foods.

Can I Do Exercise

Nope. Please dont. During the detox program, you are restricting your calorie intake to a bare minimum. You will feel starved, out of energy, fatigue and other common symptoms of detox.

The last thing you would do is to spend your energy in the gym or doing a marathon while already in a low energy state. That is a recipe for disaster.

A detox program is akin to fasting, we should reduce our physical activities. For those trying to build muscle and scared that their muscles will lost due to lack of gym actions, stop being so scared. Its only a 10-days program.

Not much muscle can be lost in such a short period. You can start going back to the gym after that .

Repeating Or Extending The Cleanse

JJ doesnt recommend the full cleanse be longer than two weeks straight she says that you dont want to run the risk of slowing your metabolism so its important to take a break from the full cleanse and re-introduce whole foods into your diet. A break would be several weeks . However, two green smoothies plus a high-protein meal per day is very healthy and can be done for life.

If youve been off the 10-day cleanse for a few weeks and now want to redo the full cleanse or do it for longer than 2 weeks, you have to deliberately add more protein into your diet and be sure to rotate or use different greens each week.

Also, once you get rid of toxins and waste during your first 10-day cleanse, you will most likely lose less the next time you do the full cleanse. Normal weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week after the cleanse. By doing the full cleanse longer than 14 days, you run the risk of slowing your metabolism which will just make it harder to lose weight in the long run. Just trying to do the full cleanse over and over back to back is not the answer Its a jumpstart to weight loss After the 10-day cleanse, 1-2 pounds per week is normal and healthy. Detoxing should not be used as an extreme diet that is not the answer to long-term permanent weight loss.
