Choco Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie
by Gina Hassick, MA, RD, LDN, CDE, NCC, eatwellwithgina.com
“I’m not the biggest fan of protein powders. Many protein drinks are loaded with artificial ingredients, sweeteners and fillers, so I prefer to get my protein for whole food sources. One of my favorite protein shakes is this choco-peanut butter-banana smoothie. It’s great for weight loss and muscle building because it’s loaded with natural sources of protein.
The #1 protein drink I recommend is chocolate milk, which has the ideal ratio of carbohydrates to protein to help refuel and build muscle after a workout. Many studies have shown that individuals who drank chocolate milk within an hour after working out had higher muscle fuel stores, less body fat and a greater overall physiological response to exercise than those who recovered with water or a sports drink. Some other benefits of chocolate milk: It contains high-quality protein to help build and repair muscles, calcium to strengthen bones, vitamin D to enhance calcium absorption, plus sodium and potassium to help replace lost electrolytes and B vitamins.”

The Coffee Smoothie Ingredients Youll Need
Lets discuss what ingredients youll need to make a coffee smoothie.
Heres what you need:
- Milk of choice in this coffee smoothie, I use unsweetened almond milk, but any unsweetened milk will work
- Banana half a banana will do the trick, the riper the better for sweetness, and keep it frozen for the best texture
- Nut Butter peanut butter, cashew butter or almond butter both work great
- Vanilla vanilla extract goes great with coffee and makes it taste sweeter, too
- Coffee! We use both fresh ground coffee AND brewed, chilled coffee in this recipe. Because: coffee!.
- Ice Only needed if you dont use a frozen banana or you want it s little thicker
Then, once you have all the ingredients gathered, add them to a high speed blender, and blend until smooth. Thats it and your perfect morning coffee smoothie is ready to enjoy.
If the smoothie is too thick, you can add either more coffee or milk to loosen. If your smoothie is too thin, just add in a few ice cubes, and re-blend. Using a frozen banana wil help keep your smoothie creamy and thick, so its always good to have those ready to grab from the freezer.
Can You Use Frozen Fruit In Smoothies
Its essential that you use enough frozen fruit in your smoothie to make it perfectly creamy. Not enough and youll end up with more of a liquid drink instead of a thick slushy consistency. You can either buy the already frozen fruit at your grocery store or freeze fresh fruit that you have cut into 1-2 inch pieces.

What Are The Best Fruits For Protein Fruit Smoothie
There are many different fruits you can use in protein fruit smoothies, but some of my favorites are strawberries, bananas, blueberries and oranges. These fruits are all high in fiber, vitamins and antioxidants, and they taste delicious together!
Other great fruit options include: raspberries, blackberries, mango, pineapple, peach.
Tips For Making Fruity Shakes
Once you’ve settled on a protein powder, it’s time to experiment with some different recipes. To make your whey protein shake easy to consume, you need to add a liquid such as water, milk, almond milk or juice. For a low sugar shake, stick to water or unsweetened almond milk.
Some people like to use a fruity protein powder flavored with their favorite berry, but you can also buy plain or vanilla powder and add fresh or frozen fruit. When it comes to fresh or frozen the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says all fruits, whether fresh, frozen, canned or dried are good for you.
However, if you buy frozen fruit, make sure it is only the fruit and does not contain any added syrups. And avoid using canned or dried fruit. They don’t mix well in a whey protein shake. A simple fruit protein shake could include the following ingredients:
- 1 scoop of protein powder
- 1 cup of liquid such as water, milk, almond milk
- 1/2 cup of ice
- 1/2 cup of berries like strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries,
- 1/2 banana
- 1/2 cup of pineapple or mango
- Add all of the ingredients to a blender and blend on medium for 60 seconds or until you reach the desired consistency.
Note: If you are using frozen fruit, you can skip the ice. To make fruit protein shakes that are thick, add less liquid. If you like your whey protein shake thin and easy to drink, stick with the recommended amount of liquid or add more.

Creating This Frozen Fruit Smoothie With Yogurt
I love smoothies. Theyre fast, easy, healthy, and refreshing. This one has just three ingredients but youd never know it based on how creamy, smooth, and satisfying it is.
I got the ingredients at Vons. Look for the new tag at your local Vons or Safeway stores to find new items like these at great values. I used Silk Unsweetened Cashewmilk, Silk Strawberry Dairy-Free Yogurt, and a frozen mixed berry blend of strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries.
I love baking and making smoothies with Silk products because theyre so low in calories and fat, theyre vegan and dairy-free, and I always get impressive-tasting results.
Between the naturally sweet fruit and the strawberry yogurt, I didnt need to add sugar to the smoothie. Love it when that happens!
The recipe as written will serve two, and you can freeze the second portion for later. Or get creative and make frozen yogurt popsicles with it. However you try it, youre going to love it!
