Since 1997, Tropical Smoothie Cafe has been providing customers with smoothies and meals. Yes, its been around for 20 years, but the Traverse City branch just opened in the fall.

Seventh grader Isabella Fochtman is a big fan of Tropical Smoothie. Currently she is on a nine-day Tropical Smoothie streak.

I like the atmosphere and the smoothies are amazing, she said.

I went to check it out myself.

I got the Beach Bum smoothie, which consisted of strawberries, bananas and white chocolate. I liked the taste for the most part. But the banana flavor overpowered the strawberry and I would have preferred a more balanced flavor. There was a good white chocolate aftertaste. The smoothie was super smooth. I was worried that it might be full of little strawberry seeds in it, which Ive experienced in the past. But there were none. I also expected there might be little chunks at the bottom. Again, none. I was very impressed.

There was no line or wait for service, but there quite a few people there eating dinner. It serves food in addition to smoothies. It was spacious and not too loud.

They have never let me down with anything, Fochtman said. She does think their location in Toms East Bay plaza might work against them.

If they were closer to town, sales may be higher, she said.

The 2 Smoothies we like are the Bahama Mama & Beach Bum. Both are delicious and make a great dessert, which is when we usually have them. We also have had their quesadilla & Caesar Salad and both were excellent.

I have enjoyed the chicken salad as a wrap and as a regular sandwich. I always try a different smoothie and have never been disappointed. Service is fast and friendly. I usually get carryout but casual seating is available if you prefer to eat in. I don’t find the seating very comfortable but it’s always clean.
