My Type O Diet Diary:
Week 1: Started off with super low energy the first few days and had a very hard time resisting cold brew or caffeine in general. After the third day my caffeine headache subsided and I felt incredible I typically crash around 2/3pm but my energy was through the roof and it stayed that way! I also began to get a handle on what I could make at first I really struggled forming meals for myself, I quickly noticed how often I ate foods that Type Os should avoid such as peanut butter, strawberries, apple cider vinegar, coffee, ketchup, pickles, beans, avocado.
Week 2: Not craving caffeine nearly as much as last week. My energy was good, I was sleeping good , and my mind was SO clear. My stomach will often turn or bloat after at least one meal during this strict diet plan it didnt happen once this book was extremely eye opening in the aspect of what vegetables and fruits were beneficial for me many of us just assume all vegetables and fruits are good for us. I followed along as best as I could and the results were so impressive!
Pair Nut Butter And Toast
While whole-wheat and multigrain breads aren’t allowed for type O people on the Blood Type Diet, Ezekiel bread, Essene bread and other breads prepared with soy, rye, brown rice or spelt flour can be included in meals.
A typical breakfast for blood type O might consist of toasted Ezekiel bread spread with a nut butter such as sunflower or almond butter, then topped with roasted, unsalted sunflower seed kernels. Avoid peanut butter, which is allegedly harmful to the health of type O people.

I had recently found out my blood type and was driving to my summer job when I first heard of the Blood Type Diet on the radio. I so distinctly remember what made me pay attention: a woman called in to share how she was blood type O and beef as a beneficial food really hit home for her. As soon as I heard this, I felt the same way! I had always known I was a meat-eater, but had tried to suppress this natural tendency because I thought only vegetarians could be healthy!
At work I immediately looked up Dr. DAdamos website and started reading the food lists. As soon as I saw that wheat was an avoid for me I thought this is crazy, I cant live without bread and abandoned my research. But the seed was planted, so over that summer I implemented some milder type O strategies in my life, like Nutella instead of peanut butter, soy milk instead of cows milk, etc. All while purposely ignored the prohibition on wheat! Not exactly the way to start the Blood Type Diet successfully, but a starting place nonetheless.
Natural Sugar Vs Processed Sugar
Its super important to note that not all sugar is created equal. 1 cup of refined sugar is NOT the same as 1 cup of fruit sugar. Why? because fruit not only contains sugar, but also fiber. Fiber is essential for breaking down sugar, and keeping our bodies from a sugar crash.
Daily consumption of fruit can actually combat obesity, according to a study done by the US National Library of Medicine. Yet, if fruit still causes your blood sugar to spike, then speak to your practitioner for the best diet plan for you.

How To Make Banana Smoothies
- Freeze the banana: While this smoothie is simple to make, it does require just a bit of planning. I like to prep the bananas right after I get home from the grocery store, so I dont forget! Remove the peel, slice the banana into coins, place in freezer-safe containers or bags, and freeze overnight. Honestly, having a completely frozen banana is what takes this smoothie over the top.
- Measure: While it might seem silly to actually measure out ingredients for a smoothie instead of just throwing everything in, I highly recommend measuring ingredients the first few times you make this, so you get a good feel for the quantities. Throwing random ingredients in a blender can often end up giving you way too much smoothie or tasting, well, nasty. Its also a good idea to measure if youre tracking macros or calories.
- Blend: If you have a high-powered blender , you can add everything in and blend until smooth. If you dont have a powerful blender, follow manufacturer instructions for what ingredients to add first to avoid cavitation.
- Taste: Give it a quick taste and if needed, add in a bit of sweetener. We rarely add in sweetener because the banana sweetens this so much. The sweetness of bananas can vary, though, particularly depending on their ripeness.
The Potential Benefits Of The Blood Type Diet
I have no problems with the blood type A recommendations, which is a plant-based diet, says Grotto. Overall, the recommendations are good for most of the blood types.
Also, the Eat Right 4 Your Type diet does help people reduce calories and can lead to weight loss. Unlike a lot of other fad diets, the general advice is good, Grotto says. I have dealt with patients who say they feel better after following the diet.
Theoretic Origins Of Blood Types
According to Dr. DAdamo, the A-positive blood type became prevalent during the early years of the agricultural age. He theorizes this is why people with this blood type can readily digest vegetables and carbohydrates, but have a difficult time digesting animal protein and fat.
The A-positive blood type diet is primarily vegetarian. DAdamo believes people with this blood type have less-than-robust immune systems and are prone to anxiety. His diet plan promises:
- weight loss
- more energy
- better digestion
As with any diet, people may try this plan in order to lose weight or for other health benefits. Weight loss and lowered cholesterol have been reported by people who have tried this diet. However, theres no evidence the theory underlying this diet caused these results.
Like many other food plans, this plan stresses avoidance of:
- processed foods
2012 study found non-O blood type groups, including type A blood, were associated with a higher risk of coronary heart disease. A 2015 study found the type A blood group had an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. More research is needed to understand why.
One found that adherence to the A-positive blood type diet might yield benefits, such as:
- reduced body mass index
- blood pressure
- serum triglycerides
However, these benefits werent seen to be influenced by, or associated with, study participants blood types.
