Four Ingredient Banana Almond Butter Smoothie
Two of the ingredients are in the name of the recipe, so I bet you are wondering what the other two ingredients could be, arent you? Its easy. They are coconut milk and cinnamon, and really, cinnamon is the secret weapon of this recipe.
Something about cinnamon with banana and almond butter is just too good to resist. Even the little extra sprinkle of cinnamon right on top really adds the perfect finishing touch with a hint of savory sweetness when you take your very first sip.
How To Make A Freezer Bag
If youd like to make this recipe in advance, I suggest making a smoothie bag that you can store in the freezer, then blend together shortly before drinking it.
1. Add the peeled banana, spinach, hemp hearts, and cinnamon to an airtight container or storage bag. You can add the nut butter at this point, too, but its a little messier to try to get in and out of the bag later, unless you can sandwich it between your ingredients, like the spinach leaves.
2. Seal the container and store it in the freezer for up to 3 months.
3. When you are ready to make the smoothie, dump the contents of the bag into the blender, and add in 3/4 cup milk. Add in a big spoonful of nut butter, if you didnt add it to the bag, then blend!
The smoothie is ready to serve right away, for a faster morning without much measuring or mess to clean up.
Why Get Enough Fibre In Your Diet
One thing Im focusing on for January is getting enough water and fibre in my diet. It seems sometimes, if Im not being intentional about it, I can get less fibre than I need and it definitely slows down my digestion. Its recommended that adults get at least 30g of dietary fibre each day so a delicious drink like this Banana Almond Butter Date Smoothie makes it super easy to get that fibre in.
The smoothie has multiple sources of fibre including banana, dates, flax seed, and chia seed. All of these provide a mix of soluble and insoluble fibre keeping your digestive system running nice and smooth. When your digestion is optimal your body can eliminate toxins efficiently, it promotes hormone balance, and of course youll just feel a whole lot better in general!

How Do I Make My Smoothie Thicker
When making your own smoothies, its tempting to add extra ice cubes to make it thicker. Here are a few ways to make your smoothie thick and creamy –

Tips For Perfecting This Recipe
Use frozen bananas. I always recommend using frozen bananas for smoothies and smoothie bowls. In order to freeze bananas, wait for them to ripen with brown specks all over the peel. Then, remove the peels and store the bananas in a sealed container. Place in the freezer overnight. Frozen bananas store well for up to 3 months.
Dont add ice. Ice tends to dilute the flavor of smoothies. Instead, make sure to use frozen bananas. If you want your smoothie to have a thicker texture, simply use less almond milk.
Use a non-dairy yogurt that you love. Since non-dairy yogurt is a main ingredient, youll want to use a brand that you enjoy. If you dont like the yogurt on its own, you probably wont like it in a smoothie either. Vanilla, chocolate, or unflavored varieties work best for this recipe.
Add toppings. Serve your glasses with a sprinkle of crunchy granola, chopped nuts, or shredded coconut on top. This adds extra texture, of course, but it also decorates the beverage!

Is This Recipe Actually Healthy
Its easy to second guess if a smoothie like this would be considered healthy with its ingredients: banana, peanut butter, and chocolate. But second-guess no more because it is!
Frozen bananas provide an amazing creamy, ice cream like base and complements a lot of different flavors. Bananas are a great energy booster with its complex carbohydrates, high potassium content, and B vitamins. Its perfect for athletes and active people when it comes to electrolyte balance and recovery as well.
The natural peanut butter is a great source of protein, healthy fats, and fiber. Using natural peanut butter with less added sugar is key. Because of the nutritional benefits of peanut butter, it helps make this peanut butter banana smoothie more satiating.
Cocoa powder is filled with amazing nutrients, especially in the minerals category such as iron, zinc, selenium, and magnesium. It also has polyphenols which are naturally occurring antioxidants. Its also easy to get confused in knowing the difference between cocoa powder and cacao powder. They are pretty similar but the main difference is the temperature used during the processing stage. Cacao powder is processed at a lower temperature, whereas cocoa powder is processed at a higher temperature. Cacao powder tends to have a more bitter taste, whereas cocoa powder is less.

Expert Tips & Common Questions
Is raw or cooked spinach better? If you are concerned about the oxalate found in raw spinach, cooking it may reduce the oxalate content by 30-87%. The oxalic acid found in spinach can also interfere with nutrient absorption, so cooking the spinach and breaking down that acid may also help improve the absorption of iron and calcium.
With that being said, raw spinach is very convenient and can be frozen, to help avoid food waste, so either version will work in this smoothie recipe.
Keep in mind, if you use cooked spinach, it will shrink quite a bit, so you wont want to use a full cup of cooked spinach in this recipe or the flavor will be too concentrated. Start with a 1/4 cup or 1/2 cup of cooked spinach, and adjust to taste as you go.
Can I use frozen spinach? Store-bought frozen spinach is usually blanched before being frozen, so this is an easy shortcut if youd like to use cooked spinach in your smoothies. Just keep in mind that youll want to start with a smaller amount of the frozen spinach, since its so concentrated compared to fresh baby spinach. In this case, youll probably want to use a little more liquid for blending, too.
Do I have to use milk? Nope! You can use water or orange juice as the liquid, instead.

- Almond butter: This nut butter is loaded with healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. In particular, its rich in vitamin E, potassium, calcium, and magnesium.
- Banana: Be sure to use frozen bananas for a thick consistency and refreshing, chilled flavor. Not only do they provide a natural sweetness, but theyre also a great source of potassium, vitamin B6, and vitamin C.
- Non-dairy yogurt: Use your favorite vegan yogurt for a creamy consistency. There are various options to choose from, including those made from almond milk, coconut milk, and oat milk. If you consume dairy, you can use traditional yogurt instead.
- Maple syrup: Sweetening this smoothie is entirely optional. Many will find the smoothie to be plenty sweet all on its own, but you can add a spoonful of maple syrup if youd like. Medjool dates, agave nectar, and honey also act as healthier ways to sweeten a smoothie.
- Vanilla: Pure vanilla extract is a secret ingredient that makes banana smoothies oh so delicious! If youre already using a vanilla-flavored yogurt, you can go ahead and skip this ingredient.
- Cinnamon: This healthy spice has anti-inflammatory and metabolism-boosting benefits.
