This easy Strawberry Banana Smoothie Bowl is a simple and sweet treat! Its a healthy Paleo + vegan breakfast or snack made with only a few ingredients, and you can add whichever toppings your heart desires to customize to your tastes.

Smoothie bowls: yay or nay? I LOVE them, which is obvious based on the number of smoothie bowl and acai bowl recipes Ive posted on the site, as well as the frequency with which I make them for breakfast and go out to local juice bars to get them.

But, some people dont see the point. Why do you need to EAT your smoothie with a spoon? they say. Who has time to sit and eat a smoothie? they ask. Ive seen smoothie bowls on a whole bunch of lists of food trends that have gotta go in 2017.

Im here to revolt against that, because at least over here, smoothie bowls are here to stay. When I drink a smoothie, I never feel like Ive had a real meal. I cant drink a meal through a straw and get the same satisfaction as a meal I ate with a fork or spoon no way.

When Ive had a smoothie bowl though, thick and creamy and loaded with delicious crunchy + fruit toppings, I definitely feel like Ive had a meal, and its enough to keep me going through the morning. Bonus theyre so refreshing, and absolutely delicious.

How To Make A Thick Smoothie Bowl

The key is to make a smoothie bowl thick and not runny, is a perfect ratio of frozen fruits to liquid. You must weigh the frozen fruits in grams or ounces and dont use measuring cups for frozen fruits.

It wont be accurate, and then you will struggle to adjust the amount of non-dairy milk, adding too much, turning the bowl into a runny smoothie.

How To Make A Smoothie Bowl:

All you need to do is add all the ingredients to the bowl of a blender and mix until smooth, creamy, and combined. You want to make sure you have a good blender thatll handle mixing up frozen fruit. To make it easier, you can cut the bananas into thick slices.

Once youve mixed all the ingredients, give the mixture a taste. If you think its too thick, add another splash of milk. If you want more sweetness, add a drizzle of honey or maple syrup.

I recommend having your toppings ready to go so you can instantly top and enjoy the bowl before it starts to melt and thin.

Smoothie Bowl Strawberry And Banana

Who doesnt love a smoothie bowl in the morning or anytime of day for that matter, this Strawberry and banana smoothie bowl recipe tastes just like strawberry ice-cream. Every time I eat a smoothie bowl it feels like Im being naughty as it tastes like Im having my dessert for breakfast, only minus the high calories that comes with some of those less fruity breakfast options.

Ingredients For A Smoothie Bowl:

Strawberry Banana Smoothie Bowl

Frozen strawberries and a frozen banana: I really like frozen fruit in a smoothie bowl, it adds a creamy coldness and thickens the texture. Whenever I have bananas that get too ripe, I do one of two things. Either make banana bread, or peel and freeze them in a freezer bag to have on hand to throw into smoothies.

You dont need to buy frozen berries, if you have fresh strawberries on hand, just wash, remove the leaves and stick them in the freezer.

Milkof choice: You can use regular milk, oat milk, almond milk, coconut milk or any milk you prefer!

Maple syrup or honey: Just a touch to add sweetness to the bowl. I really like adding some, but you can leave them out if you prefer.

Nut butter: Another optional mix- in. I absolutely love the subtle nutty flavor that adding almond butter or peanut butter adds, but you can leave this out entirely. I prefer using the healthy nut butters, the ones that are just nuts without sugar added.

Tips For Making The Best Strawberry Banana Smoothie Bowl

USE ONLY FROZEN FRUIT. If you want a super thick smoothie bowl, skip the fresh fruit. Use only frozen fruit in the blender!

ADD A SPLASH OF MILK IF NEEDED. If you need a little bit of liquid to get your blender going, add a splash at the beginning. Some fruits are rock hard and do need a bit of liquid to soften.

KEEP BLENDING UNTIL YOUR SMOOTHIE BOWL IS CREAMY. Either use your blender tamper to push the fruit down towards the blades, or turn off your blender to scrape the sides down towards the blades. Either way, keep blending until there are no chunks of fruit remaining.

ADD YOUR FAVORITE TOPPINGS. What is a smoothie bowl without toppings! I love adding toppings to my smoothie bowls for some crunch and texture. Plus, toppings taste super delicious paired with the cool creamy smoothie.

How to make a basic strawberry smoothie bowl | easy diy
  • Banana is such an accessible fruit that I always keep stocked. It is filled with nutrients to get your day started right. And, since it is so sweet it makes the best smoothie base!
  • Strawberries are one of my favorite fruits but only when they are in season! Out of season they are flavorless. Which is why I typically buy frozen strawberries. Frozen fruits and vegetables are picked in season, at the peak of their ripeness, and immediately frozen. So, you get a lot of nutrition and flavor!
  • Beet root powder is what I primarily use for color in my smoothies. But, it also packs a lot of nutrition!

You may be asking, whats the difference between a smoothie and a smoothie bowl?! Great question! A smoothie is a bit thinner, so you typically drink it out of a glass with a straw. In contrast, a smoothie bowl is more of a soft serve consistency, so you can top it with goodness and eat it with a spoon. Its much like a fruity, nutritious sundae for breakfast. Its a total breakfast win for you and your kids!

Here are a few key steps to creating this smoothie bowl :

  • use all frozen fruit, this create a delicious, soft-serve like consistency
  • first just blend the fruit until it creates a pebble-like consistency, a crucial step to creating the perfect smoothie bowl consistency
  • slowly add the milk, I add just 1/2 tablespoon at a time until its blends into a creamy, thick consistency. If you add the milk too quickly, it can become too runny.
  • pour into cold bowl, this helps prevent it from melting too quickly
  • add toppings, for extra flavor and texture!

Variations Of Smoothie Bowls To Try

  • For a little added sweetness, add 1 2 tsp agave or honey. The sweetness of your smoothies is totally up to you so add the amount that tastes best to you.
  • If coconut flavor is not your preference, you can use use any flavor Greek Yoghurt as a substitute. Greek Yoghurt is thicker and will hold up in the blender like the coconut solid.
  • In addition or instead of shredded coconut, try topping the smoothie with granola, hemp seeds, chia seeds or chopped pistachios. YUM!
  • Change up the fruitinstead of strawberries try using mangos, cherries, papaya or blueberries. All quite delicious with banana.
  • Add fresh fruit to the top of the smoothie bowl along with shredded coconut or whatever toppings you choose.

This smoothie bowl is a shout out to that bread and a reminder that I need to get the recipe from my mom!

  • Throw your ingredients into a blender and blend on high until well combined and you achieve a consistency similar to that of soft serve ice-cream.
  • I’ve heard many a case for layering smoothie ingredients and blending in different batches , but after making 1, 000, 000** smoothie bowls I can confirm that there’s barely a noticeable difference when you do this. So go forth and throw your ingredients in a blender at the same time. Easy always does it.

I also use the cup attachment for my blender when making one smoothie. It’s easier for me to clean and tends to blend more easily. But if you only have a jug attachment it still works just fine.

** may be a slight exaggeration.

Both smoothie and acai bowls are made up of the same ingredients. However, a smoothie bowl has a slightly more liquid like consistency, more like a thick drink. The Acai bowls are normally made using frozen fruits and veggies and has an ice cream texture to it. Both are just as delicious as each other and can both be served in a bowl, topped with your favorite berries and seeds. To be honest mine is more like an acai bowl as it is thick and cold.
