This blueberry banana spinach smoothie recipe is creamy scrumptiousness! Its also a fun way to get more fruits and vegetables in your diet.

I had learned about the benefits of taking collagen years ago, when I was enrolled in natural health courses. I was intending to get my masters degree in natural health, but the universe had other plans for me.

I never actually took collagen, however, until about six months ago. Dr. Axes multi collagen protein is perfect for fussy me because it is tasteless, odorless and easy to mix. You can buy this collagen in tubs or individual packets, which are perfect for when Christopher and I travel.

Heres a little history of the Ancient Nutrition company: It was co-founded by Dr. Josh Axe and Joshua Rubin. The companys mission is to restore health, vitality and strength by providing historys healthiest whole food nutrients to the modern world. Intriguing, no?!

The first brand of collagen I tried was not a winner. Im pretty sensitive to taste and odor, so no, I did not enjoy that brand. Even adding other ingredients didnt mask the flavor.

Then I tried Dr. Axes multi collagen. I couldnt believe the difference between the two brands. Or that collagen could have no flavor.

Blueberry Banana Almond Smoothie recipe made with almond milk and sweet blueberries is a healthy breakfast alternative that tastes amazing!

I hope everyone in the U.S. had a nice long Labor Day weekend full of fabulous eats and not too much labor. What did you do? My hubby and I actually spent the majority of the weekend working outside on our patio. All work and no play for us this holiday weekend! I can at least see a light at the end of the tunnel now and cant wait to post a picture of the finished product. I see a lot of campfires on the new patio in our near future!

If you ate like I did this Labor Day weekend, then you are probably looking for something light and healthy to counteract all of the damage youve done to your body. At least I am! This Blueberry Banana Almond Smoothie is one of my favorite smoothies to date and its probably mostly due to the fact that I love the color of it. Yes, I rank my favorite foods on color occasionally. The amazing flavor didnt hurt, though. I love the hint of almond flavor with the blueberries and the creaminess that the banana and Greek yogurt gave it. Definitely try this sometime.

How To Make Blueberry Smoothies

These blueberry smoothies are super simple to make and will actually keep you satisfied for hours, since it offers almost 10 grams of protein and fiber per serving. Whip them up for breakfast, or any time youre craving ice creamtheyre that good.

Frozen blueberries offer tons of antioxidants and gorgeous purply-blue color. Buy wild/organic blueberries for maximum nutrients.

Frozen bananas make this smoothie creamy and naturally sweet. This smoothie is nothing without the bananas!

Almond butter offers extra creaminess, plus protein, fiber and heart-healthy monounsaturated fat.

Vanilla almond milk makes this smoothie as creamy as possible. Buy unsweetened to avoid refined sugar. My favorite brands are Malk or Califia Farms. Or use water, for a slightly less luxurious texture.

For a sweeter smoothie, you can add maple syrup, to taste. I usually dont need it, since the bananas are sweet enough.

For extra sticking power, you can add up to 1/4 cup old-fashioned oats and/or up to 2 tablespoons flax seed. The flax seed makes leftover smoothies almost pudding-like in textureIm into it!

How To Make A Blueberry Banana Smoothie

Blueberry Almond Milk Smoothie

Using frozen fruit makes this smoothie super thick and creamy.

Frozen bananas are great for getting that thick ice cream like texture in smoothies.

Frozen blueberries are also one of my favorite fruits to keep on hand for smoothies!

To make this smoothie, add the frozen bananas, frozen blueberries, almond butter, flax seed, and almond milk to a high speed blender.

Blend until thick and creamy.

I purposefully used as little liquid as possible in this smoothie, as I wanted that nice thick consistency.

If you do not have a high powered blender, or want a thinner smoothie, add more almond milk to taste.

Ingredients In This Strawberry Blueberry And Banana Smoothie

Banana Frozen banana makes for extra creamy and thick texture + it adds sweetness.

Strawberries Frozen strawberries are less sweet but give great fruit flavor to this smoothie. You can either buy fresh strawberries and freeze them or buy pre-frozen.

Blueberries Frozen blueberries are sweet and fruit + give the beautiful purple color. Same as with the strawberries, either buy these fresh then freeze or buy pre-frozen.

Greek Yogurt Adds a creamy texture that helps to keep the smoothie moist yet thick. And the tang of greek yogurt offsets the sweetness from the fruit. Feel free to sub for a vegan yogurt if needed!

Almond Milk Adds moisture to the smoothie which helps everything blend smoothly. Feel free to use any plant based milk instead.

Ice Cubes Super simple ingredient that helps thicken the smoothie + keeps it crisp and extra refreshing.

What Can I Use Instead Of Almond Milk

Lots of options here! Almost any plant-based milk, such as soy milk, almond-coconut milk blends, cashew milk and oak milk, can be used. I highly recommend buying the unsweetened versions so that you dont overdo it on the sugar grams or compromise the taste of the smoothie.

Of course, regular cows milk can also be used! Even water will work in this recipe.

Hello. Let me proceed to tell you about how weird I am.

Last night I had this out of control craving for broccoli after my workout. Just steamed broccoli with sea salt and pepper. Quite ridiculous really, but I absolutely had to have it. So off to Target I went. Except you know when you walk into Target, its not like youre walking right out. Nope, youre going to be there for at least an hour filling your cart with things you never knew you needed. Classic example: Vanilla Cupcake Goldfish. They basically taste like sweetened little animal cracker cookies. And if youve been here a while, you know how I LOVE animal crackers . Oh and also, coconut milk conditioner. YUM.

I finally managed to leave Target with two bags full. By the time I got home I WAS STARVING. Do you ever get to the point where youre so hungry that you cant even think? I thought about breaking open a jar of peanut butter in my car on the ride home, but knew that wouldnt lead to anything good.

Blueberries. Get those antioxidants in and your skin will glow.

Banana. Good for you carbs and help to thicken up the smoothie.

Cook’s Tips And Recipe Variations:

How To Make A Delicious Blueberry Banana Almond Milk Smoothie Step By Step
  • Using frozen fruit is the key to a thick, creamy smoothie. I like to slice overripe bananas, wrap them individually, and then stash them in the freezer to grab for smoothies whenever we need them.
  • You can start with fresh blueberries or you can purchase a bag of unsweetened frozen blueberries in the freezer section at the grocery store.
  • Add a squeeze of lemon juice to the smoothie for a bright, fresh burst of flavor.
  • We use vanilla flavored Greek-style yogurt, but you can substitute with plain Greek yogurt to reduce the amount of sugar in the smoothie. If you’re using plain yogurt, I suggest adding a dash of vanilla extract for flavor, as well as a bit of honey or other sweetener of choice .
  • I use 2% milk in the smoothies because that’s what my boys prefer however, you can substitute with any variety of milk or non-dairy milk alternative .
  • Make a Banana Blueberry Spinach Smoothie by adding a handful of baby spinach leaves to the blender. It won’t change the taste of the smoothie, but it will add some great nutrients!
  • Prepare a Blueberry Banana Peanut Butter Smoothie by adding a tablespoon or two of peanut butter to the blender for staying power and healthy fats.
  • Make it a Blueberry Banana Oatmeal Smoothie by including a ¼-cup of raw oats in the blender. It will thicken the drink, add fiber, and make it even more filling.

Are Smoothies Good For Weight Loss

I’m not a nutritionist, but I have used smoothies as a tool for weight loss. If you want to use smoothies for weight loss, calculate the calories and use as a meal or snack replacement.

Meal replacement smoothies are usually in the 250-400 calorie range, and snack smoothies are typically 150 calories or less. Make sure you have a good mix of protein, greens, fiber, and healthy fats. Fruits on the lower end of the glycemic index, like berries, are preferred. Believe it or not, bananas are actually low on the GI scale!

Can I Use Frozen Bananas

As I mentioned above, using frozen fruit is totally fine.

A couple of things to keep in mind. First, be sure that your blender can handle frozen banana . I like to freeze my banana in slices or small chunks. But if you have a really heavy-duty blender, you can likely freeze the banana in larger pieces without compromising your blender.

If you use both frozen banana and frozen blueberries, you may need to add more almond milk to thin the smoothie.
