Probiotics:Probiotic is the term used for bacteria that are good for you. These are the little critters that live in your gastrointestinal tract and help you digest food. It is a symbiotic relationship. Research is just beginning to show that these helpful bacteria also work to improve your immune system. More specifically, taking a probiotic supplement has been shown to boost the immune system of participants in research and to reduce symptoms associated with autoimmune diseases and allergies. You can find probiotic supplements in any health food store and you can also eat yogurt or kefir with live and active cultures to get probiotics. Simple Immune Boosting Smoothie

Each morning when I fire up my laptop, it feels like Im bombarded with articles about the current flu pandemic. Its no secret that this years flu season is the worst in nearly a decade, and experts are saying it hasnt even peaked yet. Scary stuff!

So you can bet Im doing everything in my power to keep these nasties out of our home: common sense things like encouraging my kids to wash their hands more frequently, washing our bedding more often, making sure our humidifier stays at the recommended level, and wiping down remotes, phones, and other germy surfaces with antibacterial wipes regularly.

And of course Im encouraging my kids to up their Vitamin C intake by stocking our produce rack with fresh navel oranges and clementines. But you know what Ive discovered? My kids are a bit lazy, and often peeling an orange just seems like too much work. I know, I know Im rolling my eyes too. But rather than going against the grain, Ive taken to serving them an immune boosting smoothie filled with citrus and mango each morning to pump their systems full of Vitamin C.

Increase Immunity The Healthy Way

Many products on store shelves claim to boost or support immunity. But the concept of boosting immunity actually makes little sense scientifically. In fact, boosting the number of cells in your body immune cells or others is not necessarily a good thing. For example, athletes who engage in “blood doping” pumping blood into their systems to boost their number of blood cells and enhance their performance run the risk of strokes.

Attempting to boost the cells of your immune system is especially complicated because there are so many different kinds of cells in the immune system that respond to so many different microbes in so many ways. Which cells should you boost, and to what number? So far, scientists do not know the answer. What is known is that the body is continually generating immune cells. Certainly, it produces many more lymphocytes than it can possibly use. The extra cells remove themselves through a natural process of cell death called apoptosis some before they see any action, some after the battle is won. No one knows how many cells or what the best mix of cells the immune system needs to function at its optimum level.

What Vitamin Is Best For Your Immune System

There are 3 main vitamins when it comes to giving your immune system a boost. The Cleveland Clinic suggests getting adequate amounts of Vitamin C, B6 and E to help support a healthy immune system.

Vitamin C This is the best immune-boosting vitamin. Being low in Vitamin C can actually make you more susceptible to getting sick! Your body does not store Vitamin C, so it is essential to make sure you get your daily dose to help keep your immune system in tip-top shape.

Vitamin B6 This is a vitamin that is essential to biochemical reactions in the immune system. Your body cannot produce it, so you need to get it from food or supplements. Luckily this vitamin is found in many different foods!

Vitamin E This vitamin is full of antioxidants, which help your body to fight off infections. This is also easily consumed in many different types of foods.

Healthy Smoothies And Weight Loss

If you are drinking smoothies in an effort to lose weight, make sure to keep these points in mind:

  • Not all smoothies are healthy. Drinking smoothies alone will not help you lose weight. Healthy smoothie recipes can contribute to your weight-loss plans, but only if youre choosing low-fat, low-calorie, low-sugar ingredients.
  • Use portion control. Smoothies can contain more vegetables or fruit than you would eat raw and that means you are taking in more calories, carbohydrates and sugar than you think. Keep your smoothie at around 10 oz . If you make too much, freeze the extra portion for later.
  • Smoothies can leave you feeling hungry. Make sure your smoothie contains the right balance of ingredients. Adding protein and healthy fats will help make you feel full longer. But be careful as these additions can also make the calorie count go up. If you feel the need to add healthy fats or protein, then consider adding a quarter of an avocado , half a cup of Greek yogurt or a tablespoon of peanut butter .

Yes, you can lose weight drinking smoothies but it needs to be part of an overall diet plan. Read more about meal prep and weight loss here.

Do #13 Do Add Raw Liver

Immune

Liver is one of the most concentrated sources of essential fat-soluble vitamins A and D. And good news! The flavor of the liver is indistinguishable amidst the other ingredients.

I find that the best way to add it is to cut the raw liver into small chunks. Purée chunks in blender. Pour purée into ice cube tray and freeze for 2 weeks to kill any potential pathogens.

Pull out 1 to 2 cubes for each smoothie. Allow frozen cube to sit at room temperature for 5 minutes. Cut into thin slices, or put whole cubes into blender, depending on how well your blender purees large chunks.
