How Long Do Smoothies Last

Make Ahead GREEN SMOOTHIE PACKS!

If youre wondering how long do smoothies last in the freezer, the answer is up to 3 months.

In the fridge, smoothies last for approximately 24 hours. They can last for 2 days but to ensure maximum nutrition, flavor, and freshness, I recommend enjoying the smoothie during the first 24 hours after you remove it from the freezer.

Fruit And Yogurt Smoothies

These smoothies are great if you are trying to get your kids to eat more fruit. You dont even need to add sugar to it.

  • 2 c. fresh fruit, chopped
  • 1/2 c. yogurt

This recipe makes one smoothie, so multiply these amounts by how many smoothies you want to make.

Freeze the yogurt ahead of time by pouring it into ice cube trays. When the yogurt is frozen, add a couple of yogurt cubes to each smoothie bag along with the fresh fruit. Label each bag and place in freezer until ready to serve.

To prepare, pour contents of smoothie bag into blender and add 1 cup of water. Blend until smooth.

When you are shopping for these recipes, consider buying ingredients in bulk. Wholesale grocery stores offer bulk quantities of fruits, vegetables, and yogurt for sometimes much reduced prices.

If you or your kids are new to smoothies, then start with the fruit version and then start adding a few leaves of spinach or kale for added nutrition. You will find that the vegetables do not have much taste at all when mixed with the fruits.

Give these easy smoothie recipes a try, and you will only need a minute or two in the morning to make one!

Today, lets turn our attention to prep day and smoothies!

Im going to be totally honest

Some weeks I just dont feel like heating up the oven and baking muffins, making soup, or cooking a whole chicken . When those weeks hit, I remind myself about my reasons for prepping. If I just cant pull myself out of the prep day blues, I turn to easy foods that can be prepped without an oven: chopping fruits and vegetables, making fruit parfaits, washing greens, or blending smoothies. Even these small tasks can make a huge difference in our weekly schedule and the food we enjoy.

Before I share the smoothie prep details, lets focus on the main reasons why you should think about making smoothies during your prep time. After all, if youre going to include a task on your prep day printable or mental plan, it must help maximize your time throughout the week

The Prepped Ingredient Method

While this method will take the slightly more time out of your morningstill no more than a minute or twoits the best method for guaranteeing a fresh and flavorful tasting smoothie every time.

Rather than blending your smoothie ahead of time and freezing it as-is, with this method youll slice and pre-portion your smoothie ingredients into individual freezer friendly plastic bags or jars to be quickly thrown in the blender in the morning with a splash of your favorite milk or dairy supplement, yogurt, or juice.

One of the benefits of this method, apart from the fresh flavor, is the ability to prep numerous kinds of smoothies ahead of time, rather than having a stockpile of the same exact smoothie, which can make your morning routine repetitive. While some of your smoothie bags might contain a sweet, fruity mixture of banana and berries, others can pack in the greens with a combination like kale, pineapple, and chia seeds.

A good standard ratio of frozen ingredients for a single meal-sized smoothie is 1 sliced banana, 2 cups fruit, and 1 cup of greens to be blended with 1 cup of the liquid of your choice. Though this will require a little work in the morning, a huge benefit of this method is that it allows you to prep your smoothies 3-6 months in advance. In contrast, pre-blended smoothies should be consumed within a few weeks of freezing.

How Do You Make A Smooth Smoothie

A tasty smoothie has to have the right consistency, which depends a little on personal preference. Fortunately, adjustments are a breeze.

If your smoothie is too thick, add more liquid. We personally prefer an unsweetened milk beverage over water so that it doesnt water down the flavor.

If your smoothie is too thin, then add more solid contents. This could be more fresh fruit, nut butters, dairy like yogurt, or even oats.

Your blender can play a factor too. A higher power blender can cut through the frozen fruits and some of the more solid ingredients better, creating the smooth texture youre looking for.

Also, it helps to start at the low setting then move upward to a higher setting, rather than starting out on high right off the bat.

Smoothie Meal Prep: The Fruit And Other Ingredients

I like my smoothies frozen so for me it makes sense to prep the fruit ahead of time and place them in the freezer. In my opinion, the fruit blends up in the blender more smoothly than adding ice. But storing it in the freezer also keeps the fruit fresh until you are ready to use, so you dont have to worry about your fruit going bad and saves you money in the long run!

How To Freeze And Make Smoothies Ahead Of Time

Smoothies are a great way to get the fruits and vegetables you need to be healthy and happy. The problem with smoothies, however, is all the prep time it takes to make them.

This post may contain affiliate links.

Washing and cutting fruits and vegetables, cleaning up when you are done, it all takes time, and sometimes you dont have that extra time, especially first thing in the morning when you need it most.

But what if you could just grab a bag of smoothie ingredients out of the freezer and throw it in your blender? Sounds too simple, doesnt it? The truth is that an hour or so of work on the weekend can yield you fresh smoothies for the next month or more.

Just place the ingredients for individual smoothies in quart sized freezer bags, label the bags, and place them in the freezer until ready to use. Here are two easy recipes to get you started.

  • 1/2 c. kale or spinach, chopped
  • 1/4 c. fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/2 apple, peeled and chopped
  • 1/2 banana, peeled and chopped

This recipe makes one smoothie. If you are making up a bunch of freezer bags at once, just multiply these quantities by however many servings you want to make.

To prepare the smoothie, pour the ingredients from the freezer bag into your blender and add 1 cup of water and blend until smooth. Prepared smoothies will last for about 24 hours in the refrigerator without noticeable loss in quality.

S To Follow For Prepping Different Flavors

Make ahead morning smoothies with blueberry and ginger ...

Step 1: Choose the fruits you want to use in your smoothie. Below you will find some of my favorites but feel free to create your own combinations.

Step 2: Peel, cut and prep up the fruits you select. Portion them out for one-two servings, depending on the number of smoothies you plan to make in a batch.

Step 3: Place the individual portions into small reusable containers or bags. I suggest labeling with whats inside and then place the containers in the freezer.

Step 4: Decide on your protein source for smoothies. I generally use Greek yogurt but tofu is also a great option for smoothies. It adds a similar amount of protein to the smoothie but is dairy-free and flavor free.

Step 5: Choose your milk. My favorites for smoothies is almond, coconut or a blend of these two.

Step 6: Add the green smoothie base, your fruit selection, protein and milk to a blender and blend it until it reaches a smooth consistency.

How to Roll Your Own smoothies. Heres a step-by-step guide to creating and prepping your own smoothies.

Lets start from the top.

What do I use for a storage container?

There are many options. Here are two primary ways: Glass jars and plastic freezer bags.

Those who are plastic conscious and looking for eco-friendly options may opt for a mason jar or a glass jar with a lid . Tip: Check your local thrift shop for budget-friendly mason jars.

Plastic freezer bags are another option. Plastic bags have the benefit of being lighter, easier to store in the freezer and occupy less freezer space. You can also write your ingredients directly on the bag with a sharpie if you are planning to store them for longer periods of time. Tip: you may want to write what is in the pack and what needs to be added, especially if sharing with others in the household.

What do I add, and what order of ingredients is best?

The order: Dry, then everything else.

Add dry ingredients first. This includes, but is not limited to, nuts/seeds & spice such as:

Next, add fresh or frozen produce, such as:
