Are Smoothies Good For You? 3 Healthy Smoothies For Weight Loss

The trick to lowering the calories in your smoothies is to use vegetables instead of fruits. But, if you are a sugar-head like I am that can be quite difficult, because you are after the sweet taste the smoothie provides you with.

To solve this, I suggest you gradually transform your smoothie from being a sugar-bomb to become a detoxer.

First, step in this process is to ditch the banana. It is likely the ingredient that contains most sugar in the form of fructose. Instead add up using berries, like blue and blackberries, they add the sweet flavor without too many calories.

Almond & Chocolate Covered Strawberry Smoothie

Good Fruit Smoothies For Weight Loss

This is definitely a smoothie for chocolate lovers, yet is only 300 calories and provides 9 grams of fiber, says Gans.

    Ingredients:

    • ¾ cup frozen strawberries or mixed berries, if you prefer
    • 3-6 ice cubes I use 5, depending on how thick you like your shakes

Steps:Starting with the almond milk, place all the ingredients into a blender. Depending on your blenders settings, first start by chopping up the ice and frozen strawberries, followed by pureeing the mixture to create a smooth, even consistency. In order to get your preferred consistency, you can also start by not adding any ice, following the other steps above. Once all other ingredients are mixed together, slowly add the ice, mix and then test. Continue to add more ice cubes until the desired consistency is met. If too thick, you can add some more almond milk, little by little. If not sweet enough, add a little more honey.

Can Other Diets Also Be Whole Food Diets

Heres where it gets confusingyes, other diets can also be whole food diets. Eating a whole food diet is a lifestyle choice, but many other diets can exist within a whole foods construct. So, diets like the MIND Diet and Mediterranean Diet are also whole food diets.

For example, here are the foods involved in the MIND Diet:

    • Green, leafy vegetables five times a week
    • Five or more different colored fruits and vegetables every day.
    • Berries five times a week
    • Five or more servings of nuts a week
    • Olive oil five times a week
    • Whole grains five times a week
    • Oily fish twice a week or take an algae-based omega-3 supplement
    • Legumes and pulses five times a week
    • White meat/mix of plant-based proteins twice a week
    • No more than one glass of wine a day
    • One or two coffee or tea a day max
    • Two liters of water a day

Thats pretty much a whole food diet, right? As long as any meat or plant-based proteins are as unprocessed as possible, then it can be a whole food diet.

Other diets, like a vegan diet, for instance, could be whole food diets or not. It really depends if processed foods are included. Some food substitutes are really heavily processed, so its important to read labels really carefully. But its only some, not all.

Are Smoothies As Good As Eating Fruit

Yes and no. If you load up on too much fruit and use fruit juice as your base, then you run the risk of consuming too much sugar and calories, Taub-Dix says. However, if you limit your fruit intake to no more than two servings in your smoothie, then you’re getting a healthy amount of fruit while reaping their antioxidants.

    How To Make Healthy Smoothies

You can put nearly anything into a smoothie. But most consist of liquid , fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts , supplements like protein powder, maca or matcha, and toppings , says Ryan Andrews, a registered dietitian and author of A Guide to Plant-Based Eating.

The key to making it healthy is to strike the right balance of vegetables, fruit, protein and fat, says Miranda Hammer, a registered dietitian and natural foods chef based in New York. The smoothie is a really great way to get in those key foods, Hammer says. When you make this type of smoothie, you have the foundation for a healthy breakfast or snack.

Protein can come from unsweetened nut butter, chia, hemp or flax seeds, plain yogurt or nut milk. And fat, which helps fill you up, is the other key factor in a smoothie. Good sources of fat in smoothies are salt and sugar-free nut butter, chia, flax, sesame, or hemp seeds, flax oil, coconut meat, coconut yogurt, or full-fat organic yogurt, Hammer says.

For an additional nutritional boost, she recommends adding ingredients such as maca, acai powder, lucuma, cacao, spirulina, herbs like cilantro or parsley and spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger or turmeric.

“I really love this weight loss smoothie because it tastes super-decadent, but in reality is just loaded with a ton of natural, unprocessed, and healthful ingredients. The cocoa powder is a good source of flavonoids that are both brain and heart-healthy, and also makes the smoothie taste like I’ve added a ton of chocolate. In addition to the healthy cocoa, this smoothie also has other healthy ingredients like raspberries that are a source of immune-boosting vitamin C, and the spinach that’s a source of energizing B vitamins. If I have this smoothie post-workout, I’ll also add a plant-based protein like sprouted rice or pea protein to help my muscles recover more quickly.”

Even if your yogurt says it is all-natural, it still contains lots of sugars. Some yogurt brands include more sugar per 100 g than a Cola does, so choose wisely.

As an alternative to the classic sweetened yogurt, you can either choose the one with no sugar or go for greek yogurt. Personally, I am not so fond of the no-sugar version so I recommend Greek Yoghurt, which carries a lot of health benefits.

Tips For A Metabolism Boosting Breakfast Smoothie

    • I keep bananas, grapefruit, oranges, pineapple, and berries in my freezer at all times so I can always make a delicious smoothie. I also like to freeze greens like spinach, so I can always have them on hand. Remember to buy your bananas green and freeze them before they ripen for the lowest sugar content and highest resistant starch content.
    • I love Biochem Natural Whey Protein Powder. Its grass-fed whey, and its unflavored, meaning to artificial flavors or sweeteners. Keeping chemicals OUT of your diet is as important to your metabolism as what you keep IN your diet! Sub this whey with any vegan or paleo protein supplement if you have those dietary needs.
    • Other ideas to boost the protein, if youd prefer not to use a protein supplement, are hemp seeds and chia seeds. Both are great vegan sources of protein, are easily digested, and add protein and fiber, in addition to omega 3s.

I wouldnt freeze the pre-made smoothies. When you re-thaw then they tend to separate and get weird and frothy. You can put all of your ingredients into a ziploc bag and freeze that so all you have to do is throw it in a blender and add a liquid.

Can A Smoothie Replace A Meal

While eating a smoothie as a meal could be a healthy option, in order to make it nutritious, its important to make sure the smoothie contains a mix of foods that would be similar to a meal, says Andrews. If someone just blends up some fruit, I wouldnt say thats an adequate meal, he says. But add vegetables, seeds or nuts, kefir or yogurt and possibly some protein powder, and this would be similar to foods that make up a meal.

A well-rounded smoothie usually has 1 to 2 tablespoons of fat, 1 cup of fruit, a handful or two of greens and 1 cup of protein, Hammer says. How much you eat depends on what else youre eating that day, as well as how youre eating your smoothie as a meal or as a snack notes Andrews.

To make one of Andrews favorite breakfast smoothies, combine 1 cup frozen blueberries, 1/2 frozen banana, 1/2 cup frozen cauliflower, 1 to 2 leaves of kale, 1 to 2 cups of unsweetened non-dairy milk, 1 to 2 spoonfuls of mixed seeds , 1 scoop hemp protein powder and some granola.

In general, fruit smoothies tend to contain calories from carbohydrates and a small amount of fat. But to provide a well-rounded meal, they also need a good source of lean protein. Protein helps build muscle, which you need to maintain a healthy metabolism. A diet consisting of mostly smoothies would likely fall short of meeting your daily intake of protein.

Smoothie diets like the 21-Day Smoothie Diet are popular, but you’ll also find similarities between this diet and other short-term, low-calorie, meal-replacement diets such as SlimFast. Be aware that these diets do not meet expert advice on healthy eating plans.

The USDA 20202025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends consuming a variety of nutrient-dense foods and beverages while staying within the recommended limit of 2,000 calories a day for weight management. The 21-Day Smoothie Diet does not adhere to federal guidelines since it excludes many healthy foods that make up a balanced diet.

For weight loss, the USDA recommends a daily caloric intake of about 1,500 calories. While Sgoutas recommends approximately 1,500 calories per day in the e-book, the smoothie recipes in “The Smoothie Diet” clock in at much less than that, making it difficult to reach the 1,500-calorie target without overindulging in the one daily solid-food meal.

Have Your Smoothie At The Right Time

As I said in the beginning, I have my smoothie first thing in the morning as a part of my breakfast routine. It means I can take it more relaxed with the calories and add more fruits than vegetables without getting fat.

If I had my breakfast smoothie at night-time, I for sure would end up with extra belly fat, due to the amounts of fructose and sugars I am getting. But because I had my fruit smoothie in the morning, it has been burned off as calories during the day.

The more fruit you are having in your smoothie, the earlier you have to drink it. Having vegetables instead, and you can have it later during the day.
