Healthy Strawberry Smoothie Ingredients
Strawberries: Fresh or frozenBlueberries: Fresh or frozenGreek yogurt*: Yogurt adds some protein to this smoothie, so I think including it is super important. However, you can always sub for dairy free yogurt or any other kind of yogurtHoney: This is optional, but honey pairs well with fruit and a little bit goes a long way. You could also substitute maple syrup insteadMilk*: Milk tends to be my go-to liquid when I’m making smoothies, but you could also use water or orange juice. Oh, and ANY kind of milk will work, so use what you have in your refrigerator.
Variations On A Strawberry Blueberry Smoothie
You can also use this smoothie as a template for other berry smoothies! Here are a few ideas of berry combinations that work well together:
- Strawberry blackberry smoothie: Substitute frozen blackberries.
- Strawberry raspberry blueberry smoothie: Substitute ½ cup frozen raspberries for ½ cup of the strawberries.
Fresh Fruit Versus Frozen
I mostly prefer fresh fruits and vegetables for my smoothies, but sometimes that just isnt possible. And other times frozen really works. Frozen fruit can keep your smoothie nice and cold and refreshing without watering it down.
You can certainly use fresh strawberries in this smoothie. If you do so, I would suggest adding 3-4 ice cubes as well to keep it cold. And maybe reduce the milk a little bit. When you add ice to a smoothie you need to be careful that you dont water in down too much.
On the other hand, if you use frozen blueberries as well as frozen strawberries, you are going to need to add more liquid or it will be too thick and have too many ice crystals. In this case add a couple tablespoons more milk. But I do recommend fresh blueberries. They are that much more amazing.

Strawberry Blueberry Spinach Smoothie
Packed with good-for-you ingredients, this Strawberry Blueberry Spinach Smoothie makes the perfect summer breakfast or mid-day snack. A true powerhouse of healthy things, its also crazy delicious!
This recipe was originally published in July 2014, and was republished in July 2020 to add better quality photos, re-test the recipe, and add more helpful tips.
I feel like smoothies are the perfect summer breakfast or mid-day snack. You get a hit of energy, and some sweetness to satisfy your urge to nibble on sugary snacks, plus all the nutrients to keep you going. And they are fast to make and refreshingly cold on hot days.
I like loading mine with fresh fruit and vegetables, plus some extra protein. I added yogurt as my protein for this smoothie. This makes it wonderfully creamy and, well, smooth.
I tend to add a bit of honey to my smoothies for some extra sweetness. I have a major sweet tooth to satisfy. And it balances out the raw spinach, which some people can find bitter or dry. The addition of just a bit of honey bring everything together in harmony for a perfect summer drink.

How I Make My Smoothies
For this smoothie, I use plain Greek yogurt as the base and throw in whatever fruits we have on hand. When fruit is on sale, I buy extra so I can freeze some for smoothies. I like using frozen fruit because it makes the smoothie thicker. You can use fresh fruit, just throw in some ice cubes to thicken it up.
For this smoothie, I used frozen blueberries, banana, and strawberries. I always add a splash of skim or soy milk to help the blender do its work. This breakfast treat blends up in no time. Sometimes, I make a double batch and keep half of it in the freezer. When I am in a rush, I pull the smoothie out of the freezer and let it defrost while I get ready. I grab my smoothie and a straw on my way out the door and enjoy a healthy breakfast without any fuss!

How To Make A Strawberry Blueberry Smoothie
The first step to any smoothie is the prep work ahead of time.
- If youre buying fresh berries, be sure to rinse them, pat them dry, and then freeze for at least a 4 hours before blending into this healthy blueberry smoothie.
- For the bananas, be sure that theyre ripe and sweet before freezing. You can slice them into rounds or just break in half and freeze as large quarters/halves of banana.
- Lastly, make sure you have ice! If your fridge doesnt automatically make ice just make it the night before or a few hours ahead of time. If you dont have ice, no worries, just leave out and either add extra frozen banana for a thicker smoothie or almond milk for a thinner smoothie.
Then youre set to blend!
- Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender or Vitamix and process until smooth.
Whats The Difference Between A Smoothie And A Shake
Most people love smoothies and shakes, some dont really know the differences between them because after all the both cold and refreshing, drinkable, and delicious! In my opinion it all comes down to ice cream. . . yes, its true!
Smoothies do not have ice cream, candy bars, cookies or pies in them. Smoothies are filled with healthy for you ingredients like fruit and veggies and healthier forms of protein and dairy.
Dont get me wrong. . . I enjoy them both as probably most of you do too! I just enjoy smoothies on a more regular basis and shakes wellllll theyre a more special occasion or dessert kind of treat.

What Should I Add To My Smoothie
While this creamy strawberry blueberry banana smoothie is plenty good as is, there are some fun add ins to try! These options either add flavor or health benefits to your smoothie so get creative and experiment to find what you like.
Flaxseed / Chia Seeds: Both are great sources of healthy fats and fiber with minimal flavor. Id suggest blending the flaxseeds into the actual smoothie and then sprinkling the chia seeds overtop, almost like sprinkles!
Hemp Seeds: Another great source of healthy fats and plant based protein too. You can blend these into the smoothie or sprinkle on top, either way theyre super easy to add!
Protein Powder While I personally dont use protein powder you can certainly add it to this smoothie. Just adjust the flavor as needed and find the balance that works for you. Suggestions from friends of mine who use protein powder include: Nuzest and Aloha, both are plant based / vegan too!
Nut Butter I looove to add peanut, almond, or cashew butter to my smoothies for extra thickness + flavor. You could use any nut / seed butter that youd like, my personal favorite for this smoothie is peanut butter though because its almost like a PB & J smoothie?!
Spinach If you want an extra boost, add some spinach. Id suggest starting with 1/4 cup and tasting along the way, the sweetness from the fruit should cover up the flavor of the spinach. Also, the smoothie color may change to a muted brown instead of purple so keep that in mind.

How To Make A Strawberry & Blueberry Bean Smoothie
Are you a plant-based beginner? This strawberry bean smoothie is perfect for you, then! All you need is a knife, cutting board and a semi-good blender no huge kitchen skills at all.
We highly recommend that you stick to the frozen components of this bean smoothie because it really is a game-changer in terms of texture and makes this vegan shake a lot more refreshing.
Having some frozen veggies in your fridge is a great way to make healthy eating more convenient and oftentimes cheaper, too! They are already washed and chopped, ready to be cooked for a few minutes until you can enjoy them.
The same goes for frozen fruit, especially berries. If youre new to plant-based eating, you might not have heard of nicecream before its healthy 1-ingredient vegan ice cream made with just frozen ripe bananas in a blender. Its a thing and you need it in your life!
So, definitely try to have frozen chopped bananas in your freezer as often as possible. They work well in protein shakes like this strawberry bean smoothie, too!
All you need to do to make this refreshing drink is to add all of the ingredients to a blender jar and blend until smooth for about one minute.
Please dont use the weakest, cheapest blender for smoothies that feature frozen fruits or vegetables. Some are just not strong enough and frozen chunks could end their lives very soon talking from experience here!
