About This Refreshing Green Smoothie

How to Make a Green Smoothie

One of the main things I love about this smoothie is that I can pack in more greens while using less fruit that some of my other green smoothies, and I still don’t get an overwhelming “green” taste. The celery, cucumber and lemon juice are so water-rich and sweet, which really helps to keep this smoothie refreshing…hence the name!

If you’ve never been able to bring yourself to try a green smoothie, I highly recommend this Refreshing Green Smoothie!

What Causes Food Related Inflammation

Everything that you bring into your body impacts it for better or worse. Refined foods loaded with chemicals, pesticides and other toxins, medications, excess amounts of sugar, and other harmful things that you ingest or absorb into your body wreaks havoc on your digestive system, changing the PH balance, altering the bacterial composition, and damaging the protective lining in your stomach and intestinal tract. How Do You Make a Berry Smoothie

This is referred to as leaky gut

The lining of your digestive tract is designed to protect your body and immune system from toxins and allergens in your digestive system. When damaged, food particles get through the barrier and activate your immune response. Your body begins attacking your food as if it was a foreign invader. This imbalanced immune response creates chronic inflammation in the body, leading to weight gain and other major health conditions.

What Milk To Use

You have lots of options when it comes to the milk used in this recipe. We used standard whole milk, however you could make this a vegan smoothie by using a plant based milk like almond, cashew or oat.

To make this smoothie creamier and add some extra flavour, swap 50ml of the milk for coconut milk. This will really help to thicken the smoothie too.

You could use water instead of milk, however I wouldnt recommend doing that because it would make it really thin.

The Right Smoothie Ratios

Start your smoothie with two mugfuls of a liquid base. This can be milk, or a dairy-free alternative such as soya or almond milk, natural or flavoured yogurt, fruit juice, or for a tropical flavoured smoothie, low-fat coconut milk or coconut water. It’s important to add the liquid to your blender before adding the fruit, as this will prevent the blade from getting damaged.

Next, add about three quarters of a mug of your chosen fruit. Banana is a great base flavour for any smoothie, and will give you a lovely creamy texture. Other fruits that work well are berries, mango, peaches, plums, nectarines, grated apple or pear, and melon. You may have to add more fruit or liquid, depending on the type of fruit you choose. Play around until you have a texture you like. Add a squeeze of honey, maple syrup or agave syrup if your smoothie needs it, and finally add a few ice cubes to the blender for a thick and frosty smoothie.

10 Green Smoothie Recipes That Will Make You Love Your ...

During my 6-year, 450-city lecture tour, I always spent an hour after each lecture to meet attendees who had questions for me.

I heard many heartbreaking stories of failing health, of years of fruitless doctor visits and pills and surgeries, of scary diagnoses. And I also saw hope, because those who came learned about food as medicine and green smoothies as the 10-minute habit that could help them regain their health.

Food really is medicine. And eating the right kind can cure things that pills, surgeries, and specialists couldn’t fix.

Each of the following collections of green smoothie recipes addresses a health issue, its likely underlying causes, and ways to tweak your daily green smoothie to encourage recovery and healing.

Tips For A Healthy Smoothie

If you havent read my post on how to make the healthiest green smoothie, make sure to do that. But heres a few quick tips:

  • Add more greens: If you want that boost in vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, use fresh produce from the market or your local farmers market. You dont want wilted or dirty greens that lack in nutrients. A few leafy greens that blend well are kale, spinach, or chard. But, feel free to switch it up with celery, mustard greens, or romaine!
  • Stick with a healthy liquid base: Since youll already be adding fruit into your smoothie, its best to not add any additional sugars with fruit juice. Instead, opt for water, coconut milk, or any nut milks such as almond milk or cashew milk.
  • Mix up your fruits: For most people, 2:1 ratio between fruits and vegetables is a good rule of thumb. Some of my favorite fruits to slice and freeze are apples, bananas, strawberries, mangos, or pineapple.
  • Dont forget about healthy fats: If you didnt know, healthy fats help absorb all the nutrients from the veggies and fruits so this is crucial! You can do this simply by adding coconut oil, nuts, seeds, or 1/4 of an avocado.
  • Boost with superfoods: While the 4 steps above make a perfectly good green smoothie, it doesnt hurt to add additional superfoods or mix-ins, like I do on my post-workout green smoothie recipe. You can add spices such as cinnamon or ginger and superfoods like maca powder or bee pollen.

Working For Your Blender

Remember that cutting fruit into smaller pieces makes it easier on your blender. Bananas, if they are really ripe, usually do okay halved, but you can slice them up before you put them into the bags.

If you dont have a high-speed blender, like a Vitamix, Blendtec, Ninja, and the like, then you might want to try making leafy green ice cubes for better blending. Another option is to only make freezer packs with the fruit and then use fresh leafy greens.

How To Make Green Smoothies

Do you find yourself having difficulty making good green smoothies with your current blender??

Green smoothies are suppose to be smooth. When they are chunky or lumpy or stringy, the drinking experience is no longer pleasurable.

Of course, Blender Babes recommends that you upgrade to one of the two best high powered blenders on the market, however if upgrading is not likely right now, then follow this advice to help make smoother green smoothies when using a basic blender.

How to make a Green Smoothie – The Easy Way

Have you had a chance to check out my post about prepping smoothies and how to increase their nutrition?! If not, its a great resource! Here are a few more tips I like to share in regards to making the best creamy, healthy green smoothie:

  • Use frozen fruit. Using frozen fruit is best as it helps keeps the smoothie cold and thick. Sometimes ice doesnt blend as well, so its best to skip unless absolutely necessary. If you only have fresh fruit, try adding 1 cup frozen cauliflower.
  • Add more liquid. Dont be afraid to add more liquid if your smoothie is too thick or wont fully blend. High powered blenders tend to blend frozen fruit much better, so if you have a regular or personal size blender, you may need to add more milk.
  • Start low, go high. Start the blender on low speed, then gradually increase to high to help blend all ingredients. Finally end with the blender on low speed.
  • Swap your greens. Feel free to use kale instead of spinach if thats what you have on hand.

  • Put the ingredients in a blender and whir it up!
  • This will make two large smoothies.
  • Unlike baking recipes, for instance, smoothie recipes do not have to use exact measurements. You can adjust according to taste. The only difference in choosing between fresh or frozen fruit is how thick you want it to be. Frozen will make for a more milkshake-thick smoothie, whereas fresh will get thickened up slightly by the ice, but have a more liquidy texture. Or you can combine frozen and fresh fruit.

You can use any kind of soft fruit you want, such as berries, bananas, peeled peaches or nectarines, melons, even grapes, and puree, and know you can always add a bit more fruit or ice to thicken it or a bit more milk to thin it out.

Even though this green smoothie looks incredibly healthy , what I love most about it is its creamy texture and sweet, fresh flavor. Heres what makes it so darn good:

    • Lots of spinach gives this smoothie its vibrant color and a host of nutrients. Dont worry you cant taste it!

    • Almond butter makes it creamy, satisfying, and rich with healthy fats.
    • Vanilla extract adds yummy depth of flavor.
    • Ice cubes make it cool and refreshing.

    What Foods Are Anti

Let food be your medicine. You CAN lose excess weight, reduce chronic pain, and reduce your risk of serious chronic illness ~ and even possibly reverse chronic illness ~ simply by making positive changes to your diet. Cut out inflammatory foods and add in more whole, healthy, anti-inflammatory foods that are nutrient dense, high in omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants.

Here are some foods to start incorporating into your diet:

    • Berries
    • Seeds and nuts
    • Beans and legumes

Adding these and other ANTI-inflammatory foods into your diet reduces oxidative stress, increases absorption of vital nutrients and triggers a number of reactions and critical body processes. These create a reduction in inflammation and begin to reverse the damage created by poor food choices.

As you continue to increase these foods in your diet and reduce or eliminate more harmful foods, you WILL lose weight and have LESS bloating, pain and swelling. If you have a chronic illness, you are likely to notice a reduction in symptoms and improved overall health.

Depending on your circumstances, a gradual shift in your diet may reduce the likelihood of backsliding, however choose based on your personal health needs and the recommendations of your healthcare professionals and nutritionists.

Add An Equal Amount Of Greens

Whatever amount of liquid you added to your blender, add the same amount of leafy greens on top of the liquid. So if you used one cup of liquid, use one cup of tightly packed greens. Really pack them into your measuring vessel tightly to make sure youre actually getting enough in there. This is a green smoothie, after all.

Spinach and kale are my favorite smoothie-friendly greens. If youre using kale, be sure to remove the thick stemsthey dont blend very well. Pre-washed baby spinach or baby kale are the most convenient options of course, but you can really use any leafy green you likeromaine, collards, swiss chard, or a mixas long as you remove any thick stems. Fresh green herbs count, too. Im especially fond of mint in my smoothies, but parsley or cilantro are also winners.

    Using Different Blending Speeds

More easily blends the fruit and greens in a green smoothie.

Many people start by blending on high however they usually find they must stop it half way through, use a spoon to move all the ingredients around again, then again run it on high to finish blending.

INSTEAD, try this. After pulsing, start blending on low, then increase to high after 20 to 30 seconds.

If you still find you need to push ingredients down or around, make sure to stop the machine first and then again start from low to high.

Adding extra liquid is also recommended if your blender is still having a hard time with your green smoothie.

Are Green Smoothies Really That Good For You

    Vital Green Smoothie

The short answer is: yes. The long answer is: absolutely, yes.

Fruits and leafy greens contain a plethora of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber that protect and promote health in people of all ages. And since fruits and veggies are the most under-consumed food group green smoothies can help reluctant veggie-eaters get the nutrition they really need to thrive.

So are there any exceptions to the green-smoothies-are-amazing rule? As with anything, balance matters. So drinking green smoothies every single day isnt necessary, or necessarily best. These vibrant drinks tend to contain little to no fat or protein, so kids should aim to round out your days meals with other foods like whole grains, nuts, seeds, beans, meats, and dairy.

Another caveat about drinking green smoothies: because theyre so rich in fiber, you might notice changes in your kids digestion when you start serving more green smoothies. Start with small cups to give those little tummies time to adjust.
