This smoothie is one of my favorite ways to start the day. The mix of ingredients makes a perfect combo of creamy, tangy and sweet without the addition of extra sugar!

Smoothies are a life saver for busy people who still want to enjoy a satisfying, healthy, and filling meal. One, it’s super easy to prepare and two, you can sip while multitasking! Plus, smoothies like this one pack in vitamins, minerals, protein, and probiotics keeping you full and healthy.

Blueberry Banana Smoothie Ingredients

Like I mentioned above, this smoothie recipe only requires four main ingredients .

  • Blueberries: Start off with 1 cup of blueberries. These provide the best flavor in this smoothie and are also responsible for that pretty purple color.
  • Banana: Next up, 1 banana adds sweet, creamy oomph to this recipe.
  • Yogurt: For consistency, well be using ½ cup of vanilla yogurt. This will add a subtle flavor while also giving the smoothie a thicker texture. You can use your favorite dairy-free version if youd like.
  • Milk: Finally, the liquid! I recommend using ½ to 1 cup of milk, depending on how thick or runny youd like the smoothie to be. You can use a dairy-free option here too.
  • Optional: Here is the fun part! You can add whatever youd like to the top of your smoothie. I recommend a spoonful of your favorite nut butter and a bit of granola!

How To Make A Banana Blueberry Smoothie:

This truly could not be easier! You only need a handful of simple ingredients and about 5 minutes. Just dont forget to freeze your fruit the night before its the key to an icy cold, super-thick shake!

Step 1: Freeze the Fruit!

One key to the thick, creamy texture of this smoothie is definitely the FROZEN bananaand blueberries! Dont skip that step! Its a great way to use up overripe bananas, too.

When you have dark bananas on your counter, just peel them, slice them, and wrap them individually. Stick the sliced bananas into the freezer and pull them out as you need them. Similarly, you can freeze fresh blueberries in 1/2-cup portions, or you can purchase a bag of frozen blueberries at the store.

Step 2: Place all of the Ingredients in a Blender

Add the banana, blueberries, yogurt, milk, salt and ice cubes to the blender.

Step 3: Puree until Smooth

Blend until thick, creamy and smooth!

I make a lot of smoothies, so Ive learned a few tricks for how to get the best results. Here are a few of my best smoothie tips:

  • If you want to add protein powder or greens, blend those up with the liquid before you add any other ingredients. This helps blend them completely so you dont end up with a gritty texture.
  • For a super thick smoothie, use frozen fruit and add the minimum amount of liquid needed to blend the smoothie. I have a whole post on how to make a super thick smoothie so if you want to make a spoonable smoothie, read that!
  • Adding sweetener to this smoothie is optional. I found that the bananas and berries had enough sweetness for me. But if you like a sweeter taste you can add a little honey or maple syrup.
  • This recipe is also a great way to prevent food waste. If you have spotty banans or berries that are on the verge of going bad, put them in the freezer and save them for your next smoothie! Be sure to peel the bananas before freezing.

  • Using frozen fruit is best as it helps keeps the smoothie cold and thick. Sometimes ice doesnt blend as well, so its best to skip unless absolutely necessary. If you only have fresh fruit, try adding 1 cup frozen cauliflower as it blends much easier than ice.
  • Dont be afraid to add more liquid if your smoothie is too thick or wont fully blend. High powered blenders tend to blend frozen fruit much better, so if you have a regular or personal size blender, you may need to add more milk.
  • Start the blender on low speed, then gradually increase the speed to high to help blend all ingredients. End with the blender on low speed.

    Three: Blend To The Right Consistency

    We like our smoothies on the thicker side and usually use a spoon to eat them rather than a straw. However, sometimes the smoothie ends up too thinbut we’ll tell you how to fix that!

    First, we blend the smoothie without ice to see how thick the mixture is. If it’s too thin, we add 1-2 ice cubes until it’s thick enough.

    If the smoothie is too thick, we add a bit more plant-based milk until it’s perfectly creamy. No need for yogurt!
