Ive always loved how Tropical Smoothie puts a spin on their smoothies to fit the seasons. When I think of summer fruit, watermelon is always the first one to pop into my head! Ive been to a couple of cookouts since summer began and sure enough, watermelon was a part of each menu. Its definitely the star fruit for the summer. Its sweet, hydrating, and the perfect foundation for a cocktailor mocktail! Right in time for summer, Tropical Smoothie is offering a fresh summer menu including a Mocktail Smoothie lineup that features the perfectly blended Watermelon Mojito and Avocolada smoothies.
If summer had to be described as a smoothie flavor, the Watermelon Mojito would be it. This smoothie is made with fresh watermelon, strawberries, lime, and mint. Definitely all of the fixings for a mojito without the alcohol. It was so refreshing with the perfect amount of sweetness! It tasted like a watermelon Jolly Rancher and with zero grams of fat, its no wonder its a crowd pleaser. We cant deny that the avocado has made an entrance into the food scene that cant be ignored. The Avocolada smoothie, made with avocado, pineapple, spinach, kale, coconut, and lime was smooth, creamy, and decadent! Its the perfect after a workout smoothie!

If you don’t have a Tropical Smoothie Cafe near your home yet, just wait a bit. The chain plans on opening an around 130 locations this year alone, which will mean it’s opening its 1000th restaurant. The company’s goal is to open 1,500 cafes or more by the year 2024.
What is behind the company’s rapid growth and impressive success ? We figured a good person to ask might be the CEO of Tropical Smoothie Cafe, Charles Watson.
Watson has been with Tropical Smoothie Cafe for many years now, so he has seen the growth up close. “I’ve been with Tropical Smoothie since 2010 and was our vice president of franchise development,” he told Mashed. “Then I was our chief development officer and I’ve been our CEO for about three years now. And it’s been a heck of a ride, lots of growth, and I just really enjoying being able to scale this brand and bring healthier food and smoothies to the United States.”

Tropical Smoothie Cafe is experiencing a phenomenal year in 2021, beating goals with year-to-date same-store sales up 29% over 2019. It has also exceeded 2020’s record-setting number of franchisee agreements signed, with 270 new deals signed going into the fourth quarter. In Q3 alone, Tropical Smoothie Cafe opened 32 new locations, including five in Chicago and five in Detroit, and celebrated its 1,000th cafe milestone in September for a total of 95 openings year to date. The brand posted a 24.6% year-to-date same-store sales increase over 2020, continuing a nine-year trend of consecutive same-store-sales growth.
“We set what we thought were some pretty lofty goals for 2021, and here we are exceeding our full-year goals in Q3, with another full quarter to go,” said Charles Watson, CEO of Tropical Smoothie Café, LLC. “The fact that more than 85% of our new cafe agreements this quarter are with existing franchisees tells us that they are experiencing great success with the brand and want more of it, while the sales growth shows that our digital investments and menu innovations are connecting with the consumer.”
In fact, digital channels accounted for 75% of the company’s sales growth in the quarter. The brand introduced the ability to customize smoothies in online and mobile orders, adding another layer of convenience to drive sales.

What is something you wish more people knew about the chain and its products?
It is the food. And it’s the high quality food. It’s not just: “We have snacks!” We have a full-on robust kitchen that’s preparing fresh products. We have quesadillas, we have flatbread sandwiches, we have sandwiches, we have salads. So we have a broad array of food products that are both healthier and they’re more boldly flavored. Our consumers really like our food. If it’s not run-of-the-mill bland food, we want to bring a little bit of a culinary experience to quick casual, and still provide convenience, and value, and all those kinds of things. Right now we have a BLT quesadilla. We have a jerk chicken quesadilla, we don’t come out and just do a ham or turkey sandwich. We add some spice to it. So more knowledge about our great food offerings is something that I would change a little bit. We’re working on it.
Outside of smoothies, what’s the top-selling non-smoothie product?
Chipotle chicken flatbread. So another boldly flavored product, that’s been a number one seller for gosh, probably five, six years at this point.
