7 BEST Proteins For Smoothies To Lose Weight [Protein Powders + Whole Foods]

One of our reasons for adding Protein powders to smoothies is to avoid throwing in any artificial sweeteners. Like chocolate syrup or Ice cream or Maple syrup.

Most protein powders in this list are sugar-free or very low on sugar.

They are sweetened with natural sweeteners like stevia and thaumatin that will make the smoothie delicious without adding unwanted, empty calories from sugar.

This gives you a bit of leeway to add more fruits, even sugar-rich ones if need be.

Ditto with sodium.

As unbelievable as it sounds, the Average American consumes close to 3400mg of Sodium. More the number of packed ingredients you add to the smoothie, higher the sodium count for each drink.

Thatâs why we have selected smoothie protein powders that are low on sodium too.

Are Stock And Bone Broth The Same

A. No. Stock is made by simmering meat scraps and vegetables for a few hours. This is a great base for making soups and stews, but it does not have the same nutritional profile as bone broth.

The slow, long-simmering of bones extracts minerals, amino acids and other nutrients that the relatively brief cooking of stock cannot. This also helps the connective tissue break down to access collagen and gelatin.

Types Of Protein Powders

  • Whey is not vegan because its made from milk. However, if that doesnt bother you, it tastes great, and it provides an ample amount of protein per scoop, depending on the brand youve bought. Its a delicious option for those who can digest it and although it has a chalky taste, isnt that part of the appeal?
  • Pea Protein is made from peas, or more specifically, split yellow legumes. Its usually green, and it tastes like, yup, you guessed it, peas. When mixed with other flavors such as yogurt, vanilla or chocolate, pea protein can be delicious, and it provides a significant amount of protein per drink.
  • Pumpkin Protein is a fairly popular protein source as a vegan option. It has 1.2 grams of protein per cup, which isnt a lot if youre looking for at least ten grams for your post-workout shake, making it a tricky option, so its usually mixed with pea protein.
  • Peanut Butter has about 6 grams of protein per scoop and makes for an excellent tasting shake, especially when mixed with cocoa powder or chocolate almond milk. Its made from raw peanuts, making it a vegan-friendly option.

> > The Protein Powder Test < <

First things first. We turned to you beautiful people for protein powder recommendations. We reviewed 14 total protein powders because these 14 protein powders were repeated time and time again when we asked you guys what your favorite protein powders were. We know there are many different kinds of protein powder and nutrition powders out there, but for this post, we specifically focused on VANILLA plant based protein powder and VANILLA whey protein powder. We found that anything chocolate -flavored was sort of masked by the chocolate flavor itself and that with vanilla we could sense the true flavor and texture.

When looking for the best protein powder, there is so much to consider. What does the nutrition profile look like? Is it gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, etc.? How many grams of protein are there per serving? How much sugar is involved? Is there stevia? We put together a protein powder test so that we could rank each protein powder on a 5-star system based off of a few qualities. Heres what we considered when testing every protein powder

The last two in this list are very special because obviously taste and texture matter almost more than the rest of the qualities. When we incorporate protein powder into our everyday life, we found that we mostly blended it into smoothies OR used a scoop or two in baked goods such as cookies or muffins.

What Were Looking For

Protein source: Every nutritionist we spoke to told us that the first and main decision is whether you want an animal- or plant-based protein powder, which they say comes down to dietary preference. If youre going animal-based, powders with whey protein are generally what they recommend for the most digestible fast-acting powder to help with muscle building and weight loss. There are two types of whey protein whey protein isolate and whey protein concentrate and the experts say the best kind is whey protein isolate, because it is strained in a way that gives it a lower lactose content than whey protein concentrate.

For vegans, vegetarians, lactose-intolerant folks, and anyone else who doesnt eat animal products, plant-based protein powders are the way to go. As the nutritionists told us, powder made with pea protein is generally seen as the most effective plant-based alternative to whey. And they say a pea protein isolate, like a whey protein isolate, is even better, because it has the highest amount of protein per scoop. While they warn that some people may experience issues like stomachaches with plant-based powders, all of the ones in this story are easy to digest, according to the folks who recommend them.

If you have any kind of dairy intolerance, then be sure to check the label on your protein powder! These are not naturally occurring ingredients, so I lean toward plant based protein powder.

How To Choose The Best Protein Powder

As you scan labels, Jennifer McDaniel, M.S., R.D.N., a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, recommends choosing options that include their specific type of protein as the first ingredient then, its best to go for ones that dont use artificial sweeteners, keep their ingredient lists short, and have neutral flavors like vanilla or unflavored. Now, its time to pick the right kind of protein for you.

Know your diet. Theres a protein powder out there for every diet imaginable plant-based eaters can enjoy soy and pea protein, for example, while paleo adherents can reach for egg white protein. And if youre dairy-free, avoid whey or casein and reach for hemp or soy. Before you settle on one, make sure youre clear on your eating plan.

Understand PDCAAS. One of the more recent, accepted ways to assess the protein quality and bioavailability is the Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score , McDaniel explains. PDCAAS ranks proteins on a quality scale of zero to one. The closer to one, the better whey, casein, and egg white score 1.0, collagen scores 0.0, and plant-based options score in the middle.
