How Do I Make My Smoothie Bowl Thicker

How To Make Vegan Strawberry Banana Smoothie Bowl With A Normal Blender

There’s two ways you can make your smoothie thicker in order to turn it into a smoothie bowl – 1) Use less liquid than you normally would for a smoothie and 2) Use frozen fruit.

If you find that you’ve used these tips and your smoothie bowl is still a little runny, try adding some chia seeds, flax seeds OR nut butter and blend again.

Strawberry Banana Smoothie Bowl Ingredients:

Fruits. Youll need frozen strawberries and bananas to achieve the right consistency. You can freeze them yourself, or buy a packaged strawberry-banana mix from your grocery store. Both work equally well.

Yogurt.I prefer using non-dairy yogurts. Coconut, almond, and soy yogurts work really well. You can also use any nut milk, if thats what you have on hand. I use yogurt because it contains probiotics, which are very beneficial to our health.

Toppings. You can use a variety of toppings, depending on your personal preferences. I like adding some fresh fruits and muesli or granola. Other great toppings include: chia seeds, coconut flakes, nuts, sunflower seeds, and cacao nibs.

Double Berry Walnut Smoothie Bowl

I went through a major froyo phase back when I had just finished college and entered the working world.

Every night I swung open the jingly Froyo shop door and marched over to the counter in my gym shoes to order a dip of vanilla froyo with raspberries and walnuts for toppings.

I didnt really need to say anything, because the employees started dipping the vanilla froyo when they first glimpsed me through the door.

Simple, delicious, and so tasty. This bowl combines fresh berries and walnuts to achieve that same killer combo, minus the froyo.

Ingredients For Strawberry Banana Smoothie Bowl Recipe

Of course, this tropical smoothie recipe revolves around strawberries and bananas but I added a few other things.

  • Frozen strawberries The star of the show. You can use more or less than the 1 cup depending on how fruit you want your smoothie to taste.
  • 1 frozen banana This strawberry and banana smoothie bowl is a great way to use leftover frozen bananas! The frozen bananas add thickness and a natural sweetness
  • Milk of choice I used cows milk and generally prefer to use a milk with protein, such as dairy, soy, or pea milk. However, you can also use another milk substitute and just add protein in through yogurt and/or a protein powder!
  • Greek yogurt The ultimate secret ingredient to add creaminess. Check out these greek yogurt smoothies if you dont believe me,
  • Pinch of cinnamon The cinnamon adds a fun flavor that is subtle, but also adds antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties!

Those are the key components, but the toppings are what can really set your banana strawberry smoothie bowl apart!

Another secret ingredient I like to sometimes add is a few tablespoons of oats. This adds more nutrients, obviously, but also helps thicken it up too.

How To Thicken Your Smoothie Bowl Without Oats

Strawberry Banana Smoothie Bowl

There are a few options depending on your dietary restrictions. Oats are the best in my opinion for consistency and flavor, but you can try the following in place of them:

  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds
  • 2 tablespoons white beans
  • 2 tablespoons tofu

You wont be able to taste the tofu or white beans, but they will thicken the smoothie bowl!

Questions You May Have

What is a smoothie bowl?

Smoothie bowls are made with more frozen ingredients and less liquid than smoothies. Smoothie bowls need to be eaten with a spoon because they are too thick to drink. The thick consistency allows toppings to be added and enjoyed without the toppings sinking to the bottom.

Can you freeze a smoothie bowl?

Yes, smoothie bowls can be frozen. To defrost a smoothie bowl, let it sit out on the counter until it softens enough to eat instead of putting it in a microwave.

Can I use Greek yogurt instead of Skyr?

Yes, Greek yogurt makes a nice substitute. It isn’t quite as thick as Skyr, but it will still work nicely.

More About This Smoothie Bowl With Oats

I have to admit this was the very first EVER smoothie bowl I made.

It was definitely waaaay after smoothie bowls were super trendy and cool .

And even though I am years late to the smoothie bowl party here I am, spoon in hand, with this pretty pink, super delicious strawberry banana smoothie bowl.

A smoothie bowl is your favourite smoothie but instead of sipping it out of a cup or drinking it through a straw you eat it with a spoon out of a bowl and put an obnoxious amount of toppings on top.

Crazy? Maybe.

When this smoothie bowl first come to be it was January of 2016 and my new year resolution that year was to be more trendy and cool when it comes to food and to learn how to take better photos of my trendy and cool food. 2016 was a big year for me .

With that said Let me tell you, the first part of that resolution be more trendy and cool lasted about 3 days. It resurfaced briefly a little while later with these energy bites and maybe again when I gave sweet potato toast a try. And as you can imagine, 2016 did not turn out to be the trendy and cool year I dreamed of.

Stop me right there for a sec and lets go off on a tangent, shall we?

Being trendy and up to date on all the latest and greatest is exhausting. And is it worth it? Does being trendy make you a healthier person?

My answer? Nope.

Probably not.

End tangent.

But I do know that sticking with something even when it gets tough, practicing it often and learning from your mistakes really does pay off.

    Smoothie Vs Smoothie Bowl

The main difference between a smoothie vs. smoothie bowl is how you like to enjoy your smoothie.

Are you someone who likes to drink, or eat out of a bowl with a spoon? If its the latter , this strawberry and banana smoothie bowl is made for you.

Smoothie bowls are so much more satisfying to me, and if athletes have the time, I always recommend them as a healthy athlete snack.

How To Make A Smoothie Bowl:

All you need to do is add all the ingredients to the bowl of a blender and mix until smooth, creamy, and combined. You want to make sure you have a good blender thatll handle mixing up frozen fruit. To make it easier, you can cut the bananas into thick slices.

Once youve mixed all the ingredients, give the mixture a taste. If you think its too thick, add another splash of milk. If you want more sweetness, add a drizzle of honey or maple syrup.

I recommend having your toppings ready to go so you can instantly top and enjoy the bowl before it starts to melt and thin.

    Strawberry Mango Banana Smoothie Bowl

Spring has sprung! Which means its time for all the deliciously fresh and fruity things.

Isnt it funny how a change in weather often means a change in way we eat and the think about food? I swear, the seasons reflect my eating habits.

Fall calls for soups and roasted veggies. Winter is pure comfort food casseroles, pasta, hot chocolate. Summer, I want to nibble on fruit, cheese trays, grilled fish, scoops of gelato. And spring is that in between season where I crave a bit of everything the last bits of root vegetables, lightened-up pasta, pesto pizza, hugeeeeeee salads, lots of berries, iced coffee, and you guessed it all things smoothies.

I definitely am the type who could probably have a smoothie anytime of year , but its usually around spring when I find myself making one a day. Theres nothing more refreshing. Except for ice cream. But thats besides the point. Ugh.

Anywho Forgive my crazy brain today.

The thing is, sometimes I want a purely healthy fruit-and-veg smoothie that leaves me glistening , but I also want a really filling breakfast . And sometimes, my standard smoothies just dont always cut it. I mean yeah theyre filling and satisfying for sure and I can usually last until mid-morning or maybe lunch until Im ravenous again, but other times I need something bigger, better, more badass that will do the trick.

    I need a smoothie bowl.

How To Make A Thick Smoothie Bowl

The key is to make a smoothie bowl thick and not runny, is a perfect ratio of frozen fruits to liquid. You must weigh the frozen fruits in grams or ounces and dont use measuring cups for frozen fruits.

It wont be accurate, and then you will struggle to adjust the amount of non-dairy milk, adding too much, turning the bowl into a runny smoothie.

How To Make A Strawberry Smoothie Bowl:

Blend on low: Add your fruit to the blender. Let it sit in the blender for 2-3 minutes to soften slightly. Turn the blender on low and let it slowly chop up the fruit into small pieces.

Add liquid: Add in the milk and blend, starting on low and working the speed up slowly, until smooth. Use a tamper or scrape down the sides as needed.

Top and serve: Spoon the smoothie into a bowl and add on your desired toppings.
