I love green smoothies! They make me feel good inside and out. I posted a green smoothie recipe last month and decided I wanted to do a 30-day green smoothie challenge and see if I noticed anything different.

Actually its 30+ days now because I enjoy it so much. Ive only missed a couple of days since my 30 was over. However, I am writing this while on a road trip and know I wont get them every day while traveling. But will get right back to it when we return and will hopefully have more fresh greens and herbs ready in the garden to include!

I also came up with a new recipe using a lot of herbs from the garden and will post that soon too. Yum!

What Is The Green Smoothie Challenge:

I am doing the challenge through Simple Green Smoothies. You drink at least one green smoothie a day for the next 30 daysand you can do whatever it takes to make that happen for you. Simple Green Smoothie put together a whole guide of tips and tricks, provides the grocery list for each week, and gives you a recipe for each of the weekdays. This challenge allows you to freestyle on the weekends. I plan to pick two of my favorites smoothies for the week and make those for the weekend. Or maybe get creative and use leftover ingredients to come up with my own recipes. Each recipe makes 1 serving, so if youre doing this challenge with someone else in your household then be sure to double the shopping list and recipes when blending!

Its day 16 of my 30-Day Green Smoothie Challenge.

Im over halfway done and I should be elated. Yeah, not so much.

I mean, come on people, Ive eaten nothing but green smoothies for 16 days. Not exactly a trip to Disneyland.

But it hasnt been all bad either. Ive learned a lot the last two weeks, not the least of which is How To Survive A 30-Day Green Smoothie Challenge. Read On.

Okay, obviously I went into this 30-day Green Smoothie Challenge knowing it would be hard, especially considering that my hubby and boys would not be joining me.

Ive heard a lot of skin gurus talk about how great drinking a green juice or smoothie a day is for the skin, so part of me wondered if this was going to be the answer Ive been looking for to end my hormonal breakout woes.

While I cant say it delivered on that front, I can say that around week two I noticed that my dull, tired looking skin had a healthy, youthful looking glow to it again. I have no doubt that my smoothies were responsible for this because fruits and vegetables contain a ton of vitamins and minerals, many of which are important to skin health. Both kale and spinach are great dietary sources of Vitamin A, which encourages the heathy skin cell production that can make the skin appear more firm, youthful and radiant. In addition to this, a lot of fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants, which can help neutralize and eliminate free radicals from the bloodstream to lessen the effects of environmental damage on the skin.

I may not have found the cure for hormonal breakouts in a green smoothie, but in the process of this challenge I was reminded that eating more fruits and vegetables can be really effective in aiding a ton of other skin concerns or issues.

A lot of people who have tried the smoothie diet claim they lost anywhere between 5 and 20 pounds in a matter of weeks. However, it is important to note that these numbers are based on testimonials, which do not always represent the truth.

You Think Youll Crave Sugar But Youre Wrong

Most recipes for green smoothies, or any smoothie for that matter, are sweet. Even with the green vegetables theres always an assortment of fruits and berries thrown in with the sole purpose of covering up the flavor of said vegetables. Thats how we roll in America.

After a couple of days of this, I was dying for something salty. Enter the hot smoothie . This is when I suddenly became very grateful for my Vitamix. It actually has a hot soup setting so after I throw all the veggies in, I just turn it on and walk away. It takes about 5 minutes but when its done the smoothie/soup is actually steaming. How is that possible?

Honestly, I dont know and I dont care. All I know is that soup feels way more like actual food than a smoothie does. I make large batches in the Vitamix and leave the extra in the fridge for the following days. All I need to do is heat it up in the microwave and soups

Green Smoothie 30 Day Challenge Results

The 30 Day Green Smoothie Challenge was awesome! I drank a green smoothie ever single day for a month, and I have no doubt that green smoothies increase energy levels. They also decrease cravings for food that would lower my energy, so drinking green smoothies also helped me eat less sugar.

This was a fairly easy 30 day challenge, but it did have a few tough moments. A couple weeks into this challenge I got into a bit of a green smoothie rut. Its important to vary your ingredients so that you dont suddenly develop a spinach aversion! So I picked up a copy of The Green Smoothie Bible, and this fabulous little book opened up a whole new realm of green smoothie possibilities. The recipes are simple yet the combinations are creative. This book helped me use a wider variety of fruit, vegetables, and spices, which improved the taste and nutritional profile of the green smoothies. And my high speed blender was super helpful for processing nuts, citrus, and seeds until they are smooth and creamy.

Another thing I learned during this challenge is to drink the green smoothie for breakfast or lunch. A few times the day got away from me and I ended up having to drink a green smoothie before bed! I noted that in the evening is not an optimal time for a green smoothie. The smoothies give me a burst of energy, which I find more useful earlier in the day. So although its great to clean your laundry room, generally in the evenings I prefer to unwind and relax.

30 Day Green Smoothie Challenge (Young & Raw)

The only rule of the challenge is that I had to eat nothing but green smoothies and that every smoothie had to actually have something green it it. I decided after about day 3 that some smoothies just cant handle kale. Im sure kale is a very nice guy but I still dont want to invite him to every party. Avocados to the rescue. Their flavor is almost undetectable in a smoothie and they add a great creaminess just like the bananas.

Remember when I told you that a green smoothie could have the texture of a milkshake? What if I told you a green smoothie could taste like one too? All you need is a cup of chocolate cashew milk , a frozen banana, a tablespoon or more of peanut butter, 1/4 of a ripe avocado and a handful of ice. This one was so good I didnt even miss the burger and fries. Well, maybe a little.
