I dont know about you, but as soon as Christmas and New Years are over, Im immediately dreaming of spring and summer. Then I start longing for flavors like pineapple and coconut which means pineapple upside-down cake and coconut cake!

This time, I went a little bit healthier with these Piña Colada Smoothies. Theyre dairy free, naturally sweetened, and paleo. If you dont care about that and all youre looking for is a tasty tropical drink this fits the bill too!

While we have been pretty lucky with a mild winter so far, Im still over it. I want my sunshine, warm breezes, flip flops, and beach days. I want to enjoy one of these on my deck while my kids play in the sprinkler instead of sipping on one of these while Im bundled up under a blanket on the couch. You feel me on that?

Winter, Im done with YOU.

Also, Im cutting this post short so I can go and knock on all the wood so I dont jinx myself talking about mild winters. I dont want Mother Nature to see this and dump 2 feet of snow on us.

Each sip is fruity, creamy and perfectly balanced. Pineapple and coconut are the perfect pair, a match made in tropical heaven.

As I mentioned, this recipe is protein-packed!

It can be made with either protein powder or hemp hearts. Personally, I prefer using hemp hearts since they are a wholefood ingredient, and are a great source of protein. In fact, 3 tablespoons of hemp hearts has 9.5 grams of protein! Hemp hearts are made up of healthy fats, and adds a delicious nutty flavour to the smoothie.

Or, if you prefer, you can use a vanilla protein powder instead. Check out this article from Womens Health for some good brand recommendations. Keep in mind, if youre using a vanilla protein powder, its likely that the protein powder contains sugar. So you might like to forgo the date in this recipe, unless you like your smoothies really sweet.

Faqs And Tips For Making The Best Pineapple Smoothie

    What is piña colada smoothie?

A piña colada is a blended cocktail that originated in Puerto Rico. Its traditionally made with pineapple, coconut, rum and ice. A piña colada smoothie is a non alcoholic version of the drink made a little bit healthier with added yogurt and banana.

Can you mix pineapple and milk?

You can, but I think its best if you use coconut milk instead. Coconut goes really well with pineapple. Regular dairy milk can curdle with pineapple and theres even a compound in pineapple that can react with milk and cause some stomach/headache issues.

Can you use coconut milk instead of coconut cream in piña colada?

You can absolutely use coconut milk instead of cream of coconut in your pina coladas. The sugar content will be different in the regular coconut milk though, so you might find that you need to adjust other ingredients to make up for it, especially if youre adding alcohol to your pina colada. Since this pina colada smoothie doesnt contain alcohol, I dont think it needs the extra sugar.

Tips For The Perfect Pina Colada Smoothie

    Pina Colada Smoothie
    • Frozen pineapple. This creates the perfect creamy consistency. You can buy bags of frozen pineapple at the grocery, or cut a fresh pineapple into cubes and then freeze them yourself.
    • Stir the coconut milk. Coconut milk tends to separate in the can . So before using the milk, make sure to give it a big stir to combine the 2 layers. You can definitely use your blender to do this, just make sure to pour it back in the can and then measure out 3/4 cup.
    • Liquid first. As with most smoothie recipes, pour the liquid into the blender first, then add the remaining ingredients. Not only is this gentler on your blender, but the smoothie will blend more easily this way.
    • Consistency. After blending together the ingredients, check out the consistency. If its too thick, add in a bit more coconut milk. Or blend in more frozen pineapple or ice to thicken it up.

    What Is A Pia Colada

The piña colada is a frozen blended drink that originated in Puerto Rico. Its typically made from coconut, rum, pineapple juice, and ice.

Our inspired version uses whole pineapple instead of juice, and we freeze it so theres no need to add ice! The result is more fiber and nutrients, plus a smooth and creamy texture.

The frozen pineapple and coconut milk are blended up. Then, depending on the sweetness of your pineapple, you may choose to add a little honey or maple syrup.

For added protein, you can optionally add plain or vanilla protein powder. Or, for a whole food protein source, try a tablespoon or so of hemp seeds!

To make it boozy, add 1-2 ounces of white rum. Youll be feeling like youre on the beach in no time!

    Turn Leftovers Into Popsicles

This pina colada smoothie also doubles as a great recipe for homemade popsicles! Pour any leftovers into a popsicle mold and freeze for about 4 hours, or until solid. Then run warm water on the bottom of the mold to release the pops.

My kids LOVE these and beg for them all summer. Its the perfect healthy snack idea for your little ones to cool off with after playing in the hot summer sun. You can also pour the leftover smoothie into an ice cube tray and then use the cubes to make my favorite pineapple smoothie.

How To Make The Best Pina Colada

Making a pina colada at home is as simple as placing the ingredients in the blender and blending away. However, let me give you a few tips that are key.

    • Start by placing the liquids in the blender. This allows the blades to be able to move around freely and not get stuck on the banana.
    • If you like a thick, frothy pina colada smoothie, be sure to use frozen bananas.
    • Place chunks of banana in the blender, not a full banana. This makes the smoothie much easier to blend.
    • Alcohol is completely optional. I often blend up the smoothies and then pour into glasses. I add in alcohol to my husband and I’s drink and serve my kids Virgin Pina Coladas. Just be sure to mix the pina colada with a spoon to distribute the rum evenly into the pina colada.

Whats The Difference Between Coconut Milk And Cream Of Coconut

This recipe uses coconut milk to lend it a bold coconut-ty flavor which is not to be confused with cream of coconut. The latter is a thick, sweetened syrup thats typically used to make tropical cocktails and other mixed drinks. If you were to use it in this recipe it would make the smoothie too sweet and too thick. Coconut milk, on the other hand, can be found in the canned goods section of most grocery stores and is made by squeezing the juice out of grated coconut. Its unsweetened and much thinner. When buying your coconut milk, double check the label and make sure youre buying the right one.

Is The Virgin Pia Colada Healthy

Piña coladas, in general, are not the healthiest drinks you can make. Though it’s often blamed on the rum because it’s produced from sugar, the liquor has no more calories or sugar than vodka. The bigger culprit is the cream. In this nonalcoholic recipe, unsweetened coconut milk reduces the sugar and calories, so it’s a little healthier. If you use sweetened coconut milk , read the labels to see which is the healthier option.

    Who Invented The Pina Colada

The Pina Colada cocktail is hugely popular throughout the Caribbean, but it didnt actually originate there. In fact, this drink was first created in Puerto Rico, as part of a competition to create the countrys new national drink.

The pina colada is attributed to bartender Ramón “Monchito” Marrero Pérez, who claims that he was the first to make the delicious drink back in 1954, when working at the Caribe Hilton Hotel’s Beachcomber Bar in San Juan.

The Caribe Hilton Hotel boasts a beautiful 17-acre site on the outskirts of San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. This impressive city sits on the edge of the islands Atlantic coast, and has long been a popular tourist destination.

The Caribe Hilton Hotel was the first luxurious hotel in the area when it first opened back in 1949, and it was regularly frequented by the rich and famous, who flocked to this exciting, exotic place. It was these well-to-do travelers who first started to spread the word about the new drink theyd tried in Puerto Rico, and the pina colada was born.

Why You’ll Love My Kale Pina Colada Smoothie Recipe

This smoothie is actually inspired by one of my favorite smoothies at a local smoothie shop called a Pina-kale-ada. My version is packed with fruity pineapple, coconut milk AND some actual coconut flakes to bring even more tropical flavor.

You can really taste the pina colada in this!

Like a lot of smoothies, the base is a banana because that gives the Kale Pina Colada Smoothie recipe substance and makes it really creamy and smooth. It also ads a lot of vitamins like potassium, magnesium and vitamin C to the drink!

If bananas aren’t your thing, you hardly taste it… so don’t knock it before you try it.

The kale in my Kale Pina Colada Smoothie recipe packs in more nutrition and is the perfect way to sneak in your greens. Kale is actually one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet and is also filled to the brim with Vitamin A, Vitamin K, Vitamin C, and Vitamin B6 just to name a few.

I think the pineapple and coconut totally mask the kale flavor so other than the green color this really doesn’t taste like a traditional green smoothie.

My Kale Pina Colada Smoothie recipe has all sorts of hidden goodness BUT still tastes like a day at the beach. So find a warm spot in the house, get cozy, drink up and dream of a new season.

And for those of you who may be counting… spring is only 23 days away!

I have to tell you, this was the first smoothie Ive made in a long time, and it was so refreshing. It made almost made me wish that winter was over.
