How To Make A Berry Spinach Smoothie

  • Prep. I like to slice my strawberries and banana before adding them to the blender for my berry spinach smoothie. Usually I quarter the strawberries then cut the banana into small chunks.
  • Combine. Add all of your ingredients the strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, spinach, banana, Greek yogurt and milk to the blender. Its important to note that my recipe makes about 2 smoothies! If you only need one, prep everything and freeze half of your ingredients in a Ziplock bag. Just like that, youll have a homemade smoothie mix ready for the next time you get a craving.
  • Blend. Pulse the smoothie for 30 seconds, stop to stir, then pulse for an additional 30 seconds. Dont skip the stop and stir this is whats going to ensure your smoothie texture is just right and everything gets evenly blended.
  • Enjoy. Pour the very berry spinach smoothie into your favorite glass and serve immediately! You can also freeze or refrigerate your smoothie until ready to serve.

So, I used to be a firm believer that spinach was to be used in one thing: SALAD. I love me a good spinach salad! Really, I do!

But when I saw people start putting it in their smoothies, I was skeptical. Yes, very skeptical.

Especially when I had a conversation with a Facebook friend about this whole spinach salad/smoothie dilemma and she said, well, its not that bad in a smoothie, really.

Blueberries. Feel free to use fresh or frozen berries to make your blendwhatever you have on hand will work and makes this healthy smoothie perfect to enjoy year round! Plus, blueberries are loaded with iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, and vitamin K.

Spinach. One of my favorite veggies to add to smoothies and baked good, spinach just disappears into this blend. Fresh or frozen spinach will work here too! Just use less if you go with frozen since delicate spinach wilts when frozen! Greek Yogurt. Im a big believer in the benefits of making sure protein is part of breakfast! Plain yogurt is the perfect way to up the protein in this blueberry spinach smoothie and adds a lovely creaminess too.

Ripe Banana. Blueberries bring the tang, but ripe bananas bring the sweetness naturally without using added sugar to sweeten this smoothie up.

Tips For Making The Perfect Smoothie

    Is Spinach High In Iron

Spinach can help you on your way to your recommended daily amount of iron, although it wont provide all of your needs by itself. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a cup of raw spinach will provide around 4% of the daily iron needs for a woman. Men dont need as much iron as women so a cup of spinach provides around 10% of daily iron needs for males. Cooked spinach is higher in iron and a cup can provide as much as 36% of daily iron needs.

Spinach also contains oxalic acid, which can bind with iron and make it harder to absorb. Cooking spinach gets rid of some of the oxalic acid or you can team it up with vitamin C rich foods to increase iron absorption.

    Tips For The Perfect Smoothie

PINEAPPLE, SPINACH & GINGER SMOOTHIE | Healthy green smoothie recipe

If you want your smoothie recipe to turn out perfectly, here are six tips I live by:

  • Use frozen berries and vegetables. You dont have to buy them frozen, but I like having a really cold smoothie. It helps to freeze them in individual bags if you are a smoothie junkie! And honestly it keeps the veggies from overwhelming the taste of the smoothie for me.
  • Use baby greens to avoid bitter tasting veggies and a bitter tasting smoothie.
  • Use a decent blender. I have a Blendtec. It was more expensive, but I love smoothies and it sure beats futzing with a blender constantly, which is what I was doing before.
  • Load the blender with liquids first, then soft fruits or veggies, then frozen stuff or ice on top.
  • Thin your smoothie with almondmilk or even water if need be. Its not going to kill the taste.
  • Sweeten a smoothie with agave, dates, grapes, honey, maple syrup, Stevia, or Truvia.
