Often labeled a superfood, blueberries are low in calories, high in nutrients and incredibly good for you. They are among the most nutrient-dense berries. Studies have linked blueberry consumption to reducing DNA damage, lowering blood pressure, decreasing risk of heart disease and improving memory. How To Make Blueberry Smoothies

These blueberry smoothies are super simple to make and will actually keep you satisfied for hours, since it offers almost 10 grams of protein and fiber per serving. Whip them up for breakfast, or any time youre craving ice creamtheyre that good.

Frozen blueberries offer tons of antioxidants and gorgeous purply-blue color. Buy wild/organic blueberries for maximum nutrients.

Frozen bananas make this smoothie creamy and naturally sweet. This smoothie is nothing without the bananas!

Almond butter offers extra creaminess, plus protein, fiber and heart-healthy monounsaturated fat.

Vanilla almond milk makes this smoothie as creamy as possible. Buy unsweetened to avoid refined sugar. My favorite brands are Malk or Califia Farms. Or use water, for a slightly less luxurious texture.

For a sweeter smoothie, you can add maple syrup, to taste. I usually dont need it, since the bananas are sweet enough.

For extra sticking power, you can add up to 1/4 cup old-fashioned oats and/or up to 2 tablespoons flax seed. The flax seed makes leftover smoothies almost pudding-like in textureIm into it!

What Do You Need For The Perfect Smoothie

Smoothies are so much easier to make if you have a really good high powered blender.

This is especially so when you move to green smoothies, as you really want those greens pulverized, as there is nothing worse than bits in your smoothie

I have had my Vitamix for years and highly recommend it. My mum has a Ninjawhich I use when I stay at her place, and it is pretty good too

You will also need some reusable straws for slurping that goodness up! Especially if you are giving the smoothie to kids as you don’t want them spilling bright purple smoothie everywhere – that stuff stains!!

What Type Of Milk To Use

Blueberry Almond Smoothie

I prefer vanilla flavored soymilk. There is some little added sugar in it, so no additional sweeteners are needed. If you want a lower sugar recipe, try light vanilla soy milk or unsweetened soy milk and add 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract. If you wish, add a sugar substitute, or soak a date or two in warm water, and add to your blender.

You could use any plant-based milk you wish, but soy milk is one of the highest in protein with 6 to 8 grams per 8 oz. cup: something I try to seek out to help make sure I have enough. Plant milk fortified with calcium and vitamin D, and vitamin B12 is also something to look for. I dont recommend coconut milk due to the higher saturated fat content.

Plant-based yogurt would work as well. This blueberry smoothie will be thicker and will likely be lower in protein.

In the blender jar, add all ingredients starting with milk first.

Blend until smooth and uniform in consistency.

TIP: If it is too thick, you can add a little more milk and blend again. You want the blender to create a kind of cyclone effect where the smoothie consistently moves while the blender is on.

How To Make This Blueberry Smoothie

I like using an immersion blender, but a regular blender will work just fine. You can use fresh or frozen blueberries. I love using berries for smoothies, pancakes, and muffins throughout the year so I like to keep some in the freezer .

I suggest pulling the berries out of the freezer first and letting them sit out for about a half-hour, or microwaving them for 30 seconds first. And I use a fresh banana if I have it. If I am working with a frozen banana, I also defrost it a little first. This way I find the fruit blends easily and smoothly. And I add ice chips to make it all cold and delicious.

If you like to have this for breakfast, you can defrost the berries in the refrigerator overnight. Some people like to make plastic bags of frozen fruit for smoothies: that can keep things organized and save time, too.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

Avocado Blueberry Smoothie

Summertime is fast approaching, which means two things: first, blueberries are going to be in season and second, smoothies are about to become my daily breakfast. Why, you ask? Let me count the reasons:

  • Smoothies are so simple to make. Just throw everything in a blender and whizz to perfection! A simple smoothie means I have the mental capacity to make myself a breakfast even before my first cup of caffeine.
  • They’re perfect for meal prep! If you’re really not a morning person, you can make life even easier by prepping freezer bags with the smoothie ingredients ahead of time. When you’re ready for some tasty goodness, all you have to do is dump the contents of the bag and some milk into a blender, then flip the switch!
  • Fruit smoothies are perfect for snacking on the go! Just pour your meal into a travel cup and stick in a straw. That means you can pull double duty and nourish your body while you attend to other tasks.
  • Even kids like them! Seriously, can you imagine another scenario where a child would happily slurp down something as healthy as wheatgrass? I didn’t think so.
  • I also happen to love blueberries in particular because they are not only amazingly sweet and yummy, but they also don’t require any work! No hulling, no halving, just eating. That’s my kind of fruit!

There are two ways to thicken smoothies with ice or with frozen fruit.

Frozen bananas are the best fruit for making very thick and creamy smoothies.

Adding ice can be another way to thicken smoothies if you are using fresh fruit, but the texture wont be quite the same.

Easy, delicious, and always a favorite!

Pack in the protein and antioxidants with this creamy blueberry almond milk smoothie. Perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a snack!

Considering the depths of my love for the banana almond milk smoothie, which has been a semi-obsession ever since a trip many years ago to Puerto Rico, its kind of surprising I havent riffed on it more to date.

What can I say, Im a die-hard creature of habit. I find something I like, and stick with it.

Wash the berries and toss them into the blender. Pour the almond milk over the berries and let them rest together for a couple of minutes. Blend on medium for about 30 seconds or until the berries are smooth and the milk is frothy. Enjoy right away to avoid separation or shake thoroughly later when ready to drink.

    Blender Notes And Recommendations

    • I recently purchased a new high-powered blender and absolutely love it .
    • You do not need a high-dollar blender to make this strawberry blueberry smoothie. If you use a high powered blender , your smoothie will have a finer, more even consistency, but you can certainly make this recipe in a regular blender too. If your smoothie is too thick to blend, add more almond milk .
    • I owned this more economical option for a while. While it doesnt get things as smooth as quickly as a high-powered blender or come with the same bells and whistles, its a good option for the price.
    • I sip my smoothies through these stainless steel straws. They make everything you drink through them from smoothies, to iced tea or iced coffee, to even water taste extra refreshing. I also keep a few in my purse for when Im out and about, so I dont need to ask for a plastic or paper straw.

Tips For Making My Blueberry Smoothie

Please note that I am using a fresh banana and frozen blueberries for this recipe.

Note: If you change up and use all frozen fruit, it will affect the texture and make it much thicker. You can add more almond milk, but I have found that adding too much of this waters down the taste. So I would recommend making it as written for perfect texture and taste.

That being said, if your blender is having trouble with it as written, you can always turn it off, remove the lid, add another splash of almond milk and re-blend. If you are using a high powered blender, such as a Vitamix or Blendtec , you should not have any issues.

I like using wild blueberries. They have tons of health benefits, and they taste delicious! You can use any type of frozen blueberries though.

I have seen huge bags of wild blueberries at Costco, and I bought this particular smaller bag at Sprouts. Usually we spring for the big papa at Costco to ensure we have plenty of blueberries on hand for this very smoothie.

I mean.just look at that yumminess!

Most of the time we drink it just like this. But if you want to get fancy and add some garnishes, I love using banana slices, whole pumpkin seeds and fresh blueberries. And I love the cute polka dot straws! I confess I never use these in real life, but they look so cute if you are making these for company.

    How To Make Ahead Smoothies

Healthy Mango & Blueberry Smoothie with Almond milk

I do not recommend blending up any smoothie in advance. As the smoothie sit in the fridge, the texture really changes. However, you can prep smoothie packs!

Meal Prep Smoothie Packs Add all the blueberry smoothie ingredients to a freezer quart bag. Freeze for up to 2 months. When ready to blend, just dump in the blender, add the almond milk, and blend. Because all of the ingredients are frozen, you may need to add an extra splash of almond milk.
