Simple Ingredients In This Smoothie:

  • Blueberries you can use fresh or frozen in this but I prefer frozen in order to give it an extra creamy texture! I pretty much always have them in the freezer for just such occasions.
  • Banana Again, fresh or frozen works. Its best if at least one of the fruits is frozen. I typically keep a freezer bag fully of bananas in the freezer for quick smoothie making. If youre looking for an alternative to banana or want the smoothie to have a little less sugar in it, you can try swapping it with frozen cauliflower. You dont taste it in the smoothie at all and its a low calorie alternative!
  • Yogurt Ive been loving the blueberry dairy free yogurt from Trader Joes but obviously any yogurt that you have on hand will work well! You can also leave it out completely if desired.
  • Liquid I alternate between milk and water when making smoothies. It kind of just depends on my mood. For this particular smoothie, I really like the creaminess that the milk adds. Use whatever kind you prefer .
  • Nut butter This is also optional but high recommended! Blueberries + peanut butter is one of my favorite combos. If you want to keep it low in calories, you can try using peanut butter powder- its all of the flavor with a lot less fat. Of course, you can use any kind of but/ seed butter in this!
  • Optional add-ins When I have them on hand, I almost always throw a handful of greens into this smoothie as well. And if Im drinking it as a full meal, Ill also throw in a scoop or 2 of protein powder.

Milk And Honey Smoothie

Make use of the celery in your produce drawer with this blended juice, which combines it with almond milk, cucumber, and grapes for a sip-worthy snack.

In a blender, combine 1 1/2 cups unsweetened almond milk, 1 medium Kirby cucumber , 1 cup seedless green grapes, 2 medium stalks celery , and 1 Tbsp honey. Blend until the mixture is smooth, serves 2.

Can I Freeze These

If youd like to freeze a blended smoothie, I suggest pouring it into a silicone ice tray and storing it that way until its frozen into solid cubes. Then, transfer the cubes to a freezer bag and seal it. Thaw out your smoothie in the fridge and stir or shake it very well before serving. Frozen smoothies last for up to 3 months.

You also have the option of freezing your smoothie directly in the Mason jar. If you do this, you must leave some extra space inside the jar for expansion. Otherwise, theres a good chance it will shatter while the smoothie freezes.

Easy Fruit Smoothies 4 Ways

Few protein powders are comprised of whole foods. Rather, they contain hard-to-assimilate food components.

At the end of the day, our bodies benefit most from whole foods and not from food extracts with seemingly beneficial nutritional qualities.

What about whole food protein powders like those made from hemp seeds only? These are fine in moderation. Hemp seeds have a decent omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid profile. I personally enjoy hemp seeds weekly at most not daily.

What about non-denatured protein powder such as this Vital Whey protein powder that Wardee recommends? This is a good choice as well. And certainly an argument can be made that some people could use a protein boost. If they have higher protein needs than a nourishing whole food diet provides, by all means, use it.

Animal protein is the best source of protein. Nuts and seeds should be eaten in moderation.

Is Having A Smoothie For Breakfast Healthy

Yes! But as we discussed earlier in this post, not all smoothies are created equal. I highly recommend a green smoothie in the morning, with minimal fruit. This is my favorite morning green smoothie recipe.

If youre going to use fruit, stick to berries like blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries and banana. Try measuring your fruit and using 1/2 cup or less in total. This will help to prevent a blood sugar spike.

Fruit smoothies like the ones Ill share below are best enjoyed as an afternoon treat. I love to share one with my daughter after school. Either way, making your own smoothies at home are way more healthy than the store-bought versions!

What Do You Put In A Breakfast Smoothie

  • Healthy Fats. Your favorite nut butter, coconut milk, or chia seeds. This makes the smoothie more satisfying and keeps you full between meals. Keep portions in mind I usually add about 1 tablespoon.
  • Protein and Fiber Additions. Greek yogurt or your favorite protein powder are easy ways to make breakfast protein smoothies. A tablespoon of oatmeal adds fiber.
  • Fruit. Breakfast fruit smoothies are always a crowd-pleasing choice. Strawberries and blueberries are my go-tos. Bananas make smoothies naturally sweet. Mango and pineapple can hide the taste of greens. Unexpected fruits like apples or watermelon can be scrumptious too.
  • Vegetables. Spinach, kale, avocado, carrots, and even beets can all be added to smoothies.
  • Flavor Additions. Vanilla, cinnamon, honey, maple syrup, and dates are all excellent ways to give your smoothie more flavor.
  • Liquid. Unsweetened almond milk is my favorite for smoothies. You can also use juice , a different kind of milk, coconut water, or even plain water.

Is It Healthy To Have A Smoothie Every Day For Breakfast

That depends on what’s in it. “As long as your smoothie contains some protein and isnt loaded with sugar, it can be a convenient and healthy breakfast option that allows you to pack in a variety of nutrient-dense foods,” says Stefani Sassos, deputy director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Nutrition Lab. So keep the advice above about sugar in mind, and if you’re dying to try out a smoothie recipe that doesn’t have protein, you can still add one of the protein boosts above, or even a spoonful of a good-quality protein powder.

You don’t have to have a smoothie daily, of course. But as long as you’re keeping an eye on your total sugar content for the day, and being reasonable on the serving size of your smoothies, there’s no reason not to have one each day. Remember that even if you’re not adding sugar to your smoothie, the sugar fruit and dairy both add to your daily sugar intake, as do add-ins like maple syrup.

How To Make Your Smoothies Sweeter

We all have varying levels of taste when it comes to sweetness. For me personally, as I’ve incorporated less sugar into my diet over time, I’ve gotten used to things tasting less sweet.

Bananas are great natural sweeteners and they are often more than enough when you’re making a smoothie. If you dont like bananas, applesauce is a great substitute or you can sweeten up your smoothie with dates, honey, real maple syrup , stevia or molasses.

How To Make A Fruit Smoothie

Making a fruit smoothie is as simple as tossing ingredients in a blender and letting it rip, but we want to make sure you succeed every time, so heres our exact process:

  • Add liquid to your blender. I typically use unsweetened almond milk, but you could use any other kind of milk, fruit juice, or even just water.
  • Add in any fibrous foods. If you are adding in spinach or other greens, this is the time to toss them in.
  • Add in your frozen fruits and vegetables. I like to keep at least frozen bananas and frozen strawberries on hand for smoothie making. Any frozen fruit works!
  • Add any fresh fruits or veggies youd like to use. Here is where youll toss in fresh strawberries or an avocado half.
  • Top it off with your favorite nutrition mix-ins. Add protein powder, collagen, chia seeds, turmericwhatever youd like to boost the nutrition of the smoothie.
  • Blend away! I like to start my blender on low and then slowly ramp up to full speed. This makes sure everything is mixed well and the blades dont get stuck. I blend until the smoothie looks silky, and then I pour and enjoy.
  • Add Greek Yogurt For A Protein Boost
