step in the way-back machine to 2012

Yeah, I know, thats probably the cheesiest recipe title ever written. Im sorry. I generally have a zero-tolerance policy for cheesiness. And yethere we are. This smoothie and I have a special relationship and like all special relationships, theres room for a little PDA, right, schnookie wookums?

Im also trying really, really hard not to make every single one of my posts about being pregnant because I realize that the world is not pregnant with me and I also realize the world does not revolve around my pregnancy and me

That said, food and pregnancy are inextricably related, at first for the aversions and then for the cravings. Throw in the fact that, at least for me, a little too much salt, sugar, or fat can send a perfectly good day to a very bad place and I spend a lot of time thinking about food .

When Im growing babies , breakfast is a tricky meal for me. I need a lot of calories, I need them fast, I need complex carbs and protein, and I hate eggs. Also, Im dead tired and trying to get two kids up, dressed, fed, not looking like orphans, and sent to school with a decent lunch as well as trying to get a dog to do her business rather than be distracted by the mean neighborhood cats that like to taunt her.

    The Best Smoothies For Pregnancy

Smoothies all around! The beautiful Tash wearing a Smoothie Crop Bra’ in confetti black before smashing her own smoothie!

I don’t know about you, but my body hated me during pregnancy…and particularly during the first trimester. I very much know I am not alone here, and it pains me to think some women feel completely rotten throughout their WHOLE pregnancy, and some need hospitalization. So, in that regard, I guess…I get off lightly.

However, during the first trimester in both my pregnancies, I lost weight and I really didn’t want to as I knew how important my nutritional intake was at that time. I knew I SHOULD be having leafy green vegetables, but for some reason broccoli, spinach, kale and salads made me nauseous. I knew I SHOULD be having a lot of iron in the way of meat…but jeez louise, a piece of raw meat awaiting the pan and even a cooked piece made me want to HURL. I knew I SHOULD be consuming foods high in vitamins, like C, D, B-12. I knew foods high in DHA, zinc, iodine, protein, calcium, choline and folate were at the top of the list…but how was I ever going to get all that in me when all I wanted was fries and toast?

    Eventually, I found a solution…pregnancy smoothie recipes.

Oh and a wee tip…if you usually add egg to your smoothies for a bit of protein, give it a miss while pregnant. Listeria is definitely in the ‘not wanted’ category during pregnancy. No thanks.

    Smoothies Can Be Nutrient

Pregnancy smoothies are a fast and easy way to get vegetables, fruit, high fiber carbohydrates, fat, and protein into your diet when you might not be feeling like including these in most meals/snacks. Lvova often reminds her pregnant clients that getting all their nutrients is important. “If you don’t have enough nutrition in a day, your body will sacrifice its own stores to ensure baby’s nutrition,” she explains.

It’s also important to remember that a prenatal multivitamin and an additional calcium supplement can help prevent nutrient gaps. Smoothies also allow you to incorporate specific ingredients that help alleviate certain ails of pregnancy.

Good pregnancy smoothies are helpful in all stages of pregnancy when experiencing nausea, heartburn, constipation, leg cramps, fatigue, and other symptoms, says nutritionist Aundrea Leven at Family First Wellness.

Smoothies are an especially convenient option when you are feeling nauseated and unable to eat a solid meal but are able to sip something cold. You can enjoy your highly portable and mostly odorless smoothie on the couch, outside, or even on the go.
