High Calorie Offending Smoothie Ingredients Include:

Low Sugar Blueberry Smoothie Bowl
  • Nut butter. I love to add nut butters to my smoothies, but measuring it and limiting it is essential to keeping calories down.
  • Too much fruit. While the whole point is to get your fruit servings for the day, too much fruit is unnecessary. Keep fruit to 1 cup or less in your smoothie.
  • Fruit juices. Every smoothie needs a liquid, but be careful what you add. Juice can add 120 calories or more to your smoothie as opposed to water.
  • Milk and creams. Adding skim milk is a great choice, but whole milk or cream could double your calories.
  • Sugar, honey, or high calorie sweeteners. Theres a reason smoothies from a smoothie restaurant are so high in calories, and its SUGAR! Yes. I agree. They taste amazing. But, the trade off might not be worth it.
  • High fat yogurts. Including a cream yogurt makes a delicious fruit smoothie, but choose nonfat yogurt and save half the calories. Choose nonfat Greek yogurt and boost the protein in your shake.
  • Coconut, avocado, or seeds like chia seeds. There are whole food, healthy, high fat ingredients like avocados, seeds, or coconut. These are delicious and healthy for you. But they are also high in calories. Simply weigh and measure before you dump these high calorie whole food into a smoothie. Chances are, you will be adding ingredients that you cant even taste. Is it worth it to over do it? Probably not.

Peanut Butter & Banana Smoothie

As a girl with a huge sweet tooth, I often gravitate towards smoothies such as this peanut butter & banana one. With only three ingredients, you can easily control how much sugar is going into your smoothie. While the recipe calls for three bananas, I’d recommend one to one and a half. Bananas are a healthy fruit, but the carbohydrates and sugars can add up fast. Another alternative is to swap peanut butter with PB2. PB2 essentially has the same peanut butter taste but with significantly less calories and sugar.

How Do You Keep A Green Smoothie Fresh

The best time to consume this smoothie is directly after making it. Everything is still fresh, cold, and well combined.

However, if you want to drink it later, a protein green smoothie can be stored in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Store it in an airtight container, not your blender. Fill the container to the very top to keep any air out. Otherwise, the smoothie can pick up odors from nearby foods. If the smoothie separates, you can just give it a mix to blend everything back together. The colour of the smoothie might change as avocado oxidizes but it shouldnt affect the flavour.

You can use fresh or frozen avocados and spinach for this green smoothie. It is definitely more budget-friendly and time-efficient to use frozen ingredients as you dont have to wait for the avocado to ripen and risk the spinach goes bad before the avocado ripens! Theres no need to thaw the frozen ingredients before blending them, like in my Mango Green Smoothie or Easy Apple Smoothie Recipe. Itll definitely keep your smoothie cool and make the smoothie thicker, making it the perfect refreshing summer drink.

Why Low Sugar Smoothies Are Perfect Fat

When it comes to sugar, refined white sugar is higher on the glycemic index than most natural sweeteners and fruit. This means it causes a bigger spike in blood sugar levels. That being said, natural sugar is still sugar too, and you have to watch how much of it you take in at once. Too much sugar is stored as fat.

A lot of smoothie recipes call for a few fruits, and sometimes dates or honey. Eating or drinking whole fruit pieces is better because fruit has fiber to slow the absorption of sugar into your bloodstream. However, too much of the extra sweeteners like honey and dates can tip it over the edge.

Low sugar smoothies combine subtly sweet fruit with healthy fats and protein for an easy meal or snack without the sugar high and crash. So theyre an easy, fun way to both satisfy your sweet tooth and support your body as it burns extra fat.
