Preparing Apples For Smoothies

You dont need to peel apples to make an apple smoothie. In fact, I recommend NOT peeling the apples, since the peels contain vitamins, fiber, and nutrients.

To prepare an apple for smoothies:

  • Wash and dry the apple. Leave the peel on.
  • Stand the apple on its base. Place your knife on top, near the stem. Cut straight down along the core. The first side of the apple will come off. Set it aside.
  • Lay the apple flat, cut-side down. Cut off the right and left sides, keeping your knife as near the core as possible.
  • Turn the apple and cut off the one remaining side. You should have a long, rectangular piece that contains the core, and 4 nice big chunks .
  • Discard the core .
  • Cut the four pieces into 1-inch chunks.
  • Add to your blender with the other ingredients, and make yourself a delicious apple smoothie!

Ingredients In This Apple Banana Smoothie

  • A ripe banana
  • An apple – Fuji apples are my favorite, but you can use whatever kind you like.
  • Almond milk – I use plain, unsweetened almond milk in all my smoothies. Sweetened almond milk also works, and you could use dairy milk for a non-vegan option.
  • Oats – I use raw, rolled oats. Plain, quick-cooking oats also should work. Don’t use steel-cut oats here, because they won’t blend as well.
  • Walnuts – Shelled walnuts provide delicious flavor…think of an apple crisp!
  • Vanilla extract – I add vanilla to most of my smoothies, since I buy plain almond milk. If you’re using vanilla almond milk, you could probably skip the extract, but a little splash won’t hurt.
  • Cinnamon – Apple-cinnamon is one of my favorite combinations.
  • Allspice – This is optional, but adds a warm spice accent.
  • A sprinkle of salt – Since the nuts are unsalted and the oats are plain, this adds a little somethin-somethin to make the apple milkshake flavor pop.
  • Ice – Use a heaping half cup if your banana isn’t frozen. If using a frozen banana, just add 5 ice cubes.

I am a smoothie lover through and through. I started making them back when I was in fourth grade. Though I suppose I used the term smoothie loosely as my smoothies often contained a few scoops of rainbow sherbet. My smoothies have definitely evolved in the past 25+ years!

I typically like to start my day out with a smoothie. I love them because 1) I can make them quickly and the clean up is close to nil, 2) Theyre easy to sip on the go, and 3) Its easy to make them healthy and nourishing. Its also a way I can get a few servings of fruit and veggies into my day without too much effort.

This one is still on the healthy side and is packed with protein, fiber, and healthy fats. You know how sometimes youre hungry an hour after you drink a smoothie? Not with this one. All of the ingredients add up to a satisfying, filling smoothie that tastes like a milkshake.

Which Types Of Oats Are The Best

Any type of oats in their natural state are equally as healthy. There are more nutrients present in steel cut and whole oat groats, but they are much more difficult to prepare. And bear in mind, that when measuring them, they are double the calories of rolled oats.

Rolled oats and instant oats or oat flour doesnt naturally contain gluten, but it can get contaminated with gluten in the factory while its being processed. So its better to use gluten free rolled oats.

I prefer these gluten free, organic rolled oats. You can get them on Amazon.

Bear in mind that rolled oats and instant oats have already been heat treated so they are fine to eat straight out of the packet. Thats why you can throw them straight into a smoothie without having to cook them first.

If you are using oat groats, or steel cut oats, you will need to prepare them before you eat them and measure half of the raw quantity for any given recipe. However, they double in size once theyve been soaked or cooked, so in this state, the quantities would be just the same.

Another thing to watch out for is added sugar and chemicals in quick cook oats. It is better to find an ingredient list containing oats and nothing else.

  • In a blender, add milk, sugar, cinnamon. Add oats and ice.
  • Blend on high until very smooth.
  • Chill in the refrigerator or pour in a glass over ice.

    • granola as a topping. If youve never added granola as a topping to your smoothie, its a game changer. I did it with this chocolate peanut butter espresso smoothie parfait and its perfect if youre the type of person that prefers to chew your breakfast rather than just drink it
    • 1/2 cup milk of choice
    • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
    • 1/3 cup rolled oats, gluten-free if needed
    • 1 apple, peeled, cored and chopped
    • 1 large frozen banana, chopped
    • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

    Chai Tea And Oats Smoothie

    Ingredients :

    • ¾ cup of water
    • 1 masala chai tea bag
    • ½ frozen banana, broken into chunks
    • 2 tablespoons of Bobs red mill organic old fashioned rolled oats

  • Mix all the ingredients in a blender.
  • Blend on low, then finish on high for 1 to 2 minutes, until smooth.

    • Keep your ingredients cold. Smoothies taste best cold, so try to keep your ingredients cold as well or the results will be lukewarm. Except for the oats and cinnamon, I suggest storing the rest in the fridge for a chilled morning drink. You may also add a few ice cubes, of course.
    • Stir if needed. If you find you’re getting chunks in your Apple Oat Smoothie, use the attachment or a spoon to stir the ingredients so everything blends smoothly and incorporates together. Nut butter can sometimes get stuck to the walls of the blender and needs to be dislodged.
