As soon as I walked into the Anytime Fitness in Cliffside Park, NJ, I felt like I belonged. The gym had a positive and welcoming vibe thats hard to accomplish in a chain gym.

The staff was friendly and helpful and never once pushed me into signing up for a membership. They gave me a quick tour of the gym and made sure I didnt need any assistance before I started working out.

I didnt notice any members doing anything inappropriate while I was there, but Ive heard that the staff at this location is serious about maintaining a safe environment for everyone. I have no doubt that theyd jump in if anyone felt uncomfortable or people were breaking the rules.

The type of people youll see at Anytime Fitness depends on when you go. The early morning gym-goers tend to be dedicated individuals and while theyre polite, theyre more likely to stick to their own routines and not talk to anyone else.

In the late morning, youll probably find seniors and women in their 30s or 40s, who I presume are stay-at-home moms. At lunchtime and in the evening, youll find people from a variety of age groups since most people will be working out on their lunch breaks or after work.

From what Ive seen, the members enjoy working out at the Cliffside Park location. When I visited, it seemed like there were tight-knit groups of friends who either took the group classes together or did similar workouts together and kept each other motivated.

Who Does Anytime Fitness Cater To

Anytime Fitness is a good gym for people with all kinds of goals and training backgrounds, though its not the best gym for competitive powerlifters or professional bodybuilders.

People who enjoy group classes will enjoy Anytime Fitness. Some locations offer traditional group classes such as Zumba and boot camp, while other locations offer team workouts. These are small group sessions with three different levels Base, Burn and Build that cater to people with different experience levels and goals.

Anytime Fitness is a good gym for people who powerlift as a hobby. It has multiple squat racks or power cages and several benches as well as dumbbells and machines for accessories. The only drawback is that not all locations allow chalk, which makes it less than ideal for competitive powerlifters.

Since Anytime Fitness has training areas with functional fitness equipment, its a good place for CrossFitters. There are bumper plates, kettlebells, plyo boxes, and pullup bars, so you can do most WODs.

However, if youre coming from a CrossFit box youre probably used to dropping weights from overhead, which isnt allowed at Anytime Fitness. If you do want to do CrossFit WODs there, youll need to set the weights down carefully after overhead squats, thrusters, push presses, and other overhead barbell movements.

You Can Save An Additional $5/month By Having Onelife Withdraw Monthly Payments From Your Bank Account

Many gyms only allow funds to be withdrawn from members bank accounts through ACH, but Onelife also offers the option to sign up with a credit card. However, youll save an additional $5/month by choosing checking account withdrawal as your primary form of payment.

Its not much, but that extra money can add up over time, especially if you remain a Onelife member for several years.

Read Your Contract Carefully

Anytime Fitness isnt the best at disclosing all of its fees. In addition to an initiation fee, you also have to pay a one-time fee of about $25 for your key fob and an annual fee at some locations.

Some locations also charge biweekly instead of monthly. Make sure you understand how often your gym will charge you so you dont have any surprises when you check your bank statement or credit card bill.

My Experience Working Out At Onelife Fitness

Welcome to Onelife Fitness Chesapeake Square

The Olney, MD location just opened in 2021, so everything is still clean and in good condition. The staff is polite and friendly. Some of the personal trainers were walking around the gym floor even though they werent working with clients, but they didnt interrupt anyone who was working out.

The cardio machines are all at the front of the gym. Theres a turf area off to the side that has a couple of resistance machines on it but still has enough room for bodyweight workouts or some CrossFit WODs. A recovery room with massage chairs, the group fitness studio, a yoga studio, and the personal training office can also be found off to the side.

The resistance machines and free weights are all at the back of the gym. Everything is spaced far apart so even if the gym is crowded, you still have room to lift.

There are a couple of squat racks and lifting platforms in one secluded corner and even more in a back room on the other side of the gym. I liked this because you can focus on your squats or deadlifts without getting distracted by other people walking around.

The Olney, MD location also has a second floor with another turf area. This area has rowers, a ski erg, and a wide selection of functional training equipment.

Even though the Olney location is new, it gets crowded, especially in the evenings. But given how large it is, you can likely always find something to do even during its busiest times.

Are Anytime Fitness Memberships Transferable

Whether or not you can transfer your membership to someone else depends on the location.

In most cases, as long as youre a member in good standing and the other person hasnt been a member within the past 6-12 months, you can transfer your membership to another individual. You may have to pay a transfer fee of up to $50.

You can transfer your home club location to another one by speaking to a staff member. If youre moving, your new residence needs to be at least 10 miles away from your current Anytime Fitness location in order for the transfer to be approved. There are no transfer fees if you change your location, but your monthly costs may increase depending on the rates at your new gym.

I love this gym. We’ve been coming quite a few years and I’ve never had a bad experience. They take great care to make sure the equipment stays clean and in good repair. Almost any kind of equipment you need, you’ll find here. Unless it’s something totally random but I’d ask if that’s the case. It’s a big gym, but definitely not impersonal. The trainers are great and listen to what you’re asking and are always helpful.

So is an Anytime Fitness membership worth it? An Anytime Fitness membership is worth it for non-competitive powerlifters, CrossFitters, or recreational gym-goers. The facilities are clean, theres a good mix of strength and cardio equipment, and the gym is convenient since you can use your membership at any location and theyre open 24/7.

Cancellation Policy & Contract Length

Onelife Fitnesss contracts are 12 months. You can cancel your membership at any time. But unless youre canceling for a medical reason or moving somewhere that doesnt have a club within 25 miles, youll have to pay three months worth of dues.

Once your 12-month term is over, you can cancel at any time, for any reason, with 30 days notice.

To cancel your membership, you can send an email or mail a letter via certified mail to Onelife Fitnesss corporate headquarters. They dont accept verbal cancellation requests.

You can also temporarily freeze your membership. Onelife will allow you to make your membership inactive for a minimum of three months. Youll have to submit a doctors note to verify you have an injury, illness, or another medical issue that prevents you from working out.

Is Anytime Fitness Personal Training Worth It

Ive heard good things about the personal trainers at the Cliffside Park, NJ location, but the quality of trainers will vary by location.

Anytime Fitness personal trainers must have certifications from accredited institutions such as the National Academy of Sports Medicine or the American Council on Exercise . Some locations also require degrees in Kinesiology or Exercise Science, which is more than some other chain gyms require of their personal trainers.

Personal training sessions start at $35-$45 per hour but can go as high as $60-$75 per hour. Some locations offer 30-minute sessions as well with prices starting at $25-$30 per session.

If youre interested in personal training, I recommend asking your club if they have packages available. You may be able to get packages for 5, 10, or 20 sessions, which will be more cost-effective in the long run.

Anytime Fitness memberships come with one free personal training consultation. If youre not yet comfortable in the gym or dont know where to start, I would take advantage of it. A trainer will show you around the gym and give you a 30-day workout plan to help get you started.

I saw a couple of people working with trainers when I visited, and it looked like they were enjoying their workouts. I would recommend Anytime Fitness personal training sessions to people who are new to fitness, people who need motivation and accountability from a trainer, and anyone who wants to switch up their routine.

Who Does Onelife Fitness Cater To

Onelife Fitness caters to people with all kinds of training goals, whether you like to lift weights or you prefer to focus more on cardio and endurance.

Onelife Fitness is an excellent gym for bodybuilders. It has machines for every body part as well as a ton of free weights. If you incorporate steady-state cardio into your routine, you can choose between a variety of cardio machines.

While Onelife Fitness can be a good gym for powerlifters, its not the best. The only reason Im hesitant to recommend it for powerlifters is that chalk, grunting, and dropping weights are not allowed. If you can live with that, then Onelife Fitness is a great place for your powerlifting workouts. If its a dealbreaker for you, youll have to find a more powerlifting-friendly gym.

Their policy against dropping weights is also a drawback for CrossFitters. Theres also a limited amount of barbells, so it may be difficult for you to find a free one during peak hours. Theres also no convenient pullup bar option in the functional training areas so it would be hard to do a WOD with pullups, toes-to-bar, or bar muscle-ups.

But if youre willing to get creative and swap out some movements for example, doing TRX rows instead of pullups or doing dumbbell thrusters instead of barbell thrusters you can make most CrossFit WODs work.

Onelife Fitness also has signature classes called APEX and SPARK. APEX is a functional training class while SPARK incorporates speed and strength drills on the bike.

It Makes More Sense Financially To Sign Up For The Premier Plan

Unless you sign up during a promotion, youll have to pay high initiation fees. And even though the Basic plan is cheaper per month, when you add a $249 initiation fee on top of that, youll end up spending almost as much money as you would if you bought the Premier plan.

Is Onelife Fitness Personal Training Worth It

Whether or not a personal training package at Onelife Fitness is worth it is a personal decision. It depends on your goals and training history and whether youre a self-disciplined person or need more accountability.

Like the trainers at most gyms, Onelifes personal trainers must have certifications from an accredited institution. Although many trainers have college degrees, its not required.

Onelife trainers are also not required to have previous personal training experience, so you may be working with a brand new trainer. Thats not necessarily a bad thing, but if you prefer to work with someone who has a more established career, I recommend talking to the staff to ensure youre matched with an experienced trainer.

When you join Onelife Fitness, you can sign up for the Smart Start program for free. This program includes two one-hour sessions with a trainer so you can learn how to use the equipment, discuss your fitness background with a professional, and have a customized training plan created for you.

At the beginning of this program, a trainer will also weigh you and take your measurements. Youll then be able to schedule a complimentary follow-up 30 days later to see how much progress youve made.

I think the Smart Start program is a great deal since most gyms only offer one one-hour session for free with your membership. If youre new to fitness, Id recommend taking advantage of this program so you can establish a baseline and have something to work towards.
