Is It Important To Peel Bananas

How to Freeze Bananas (for Smoothies) – Quick and easy

You can freeze bananas in the peel, but you’ll save yourself some time and frustration if you remove the peels before you freeze your bananas.

When frozen, banana peels turn dark and get soft. While the bananas are still safe to eat when they’re like this, it makes the peels very difficult to remove.

Leaving the peels intact will also diminish the quality of your bananas. They won’t be as ‘fresh’ as they would be without the peel, and some people say it takes a month off the storage time.

So, go ahead and remove the peels before freezing.

Freezing Method: Peeled And Frozen Whole

  • Timing: 3 minutes prep time, 2 hours freezing time
  • Rating: 5/10

About this method: Peel your bananas and pop them in a plastic bag and thats it! Theres no slicing, dicing or mashing and the bananas are safely covered for chilling in the freezer for the next three months. Whole bananas are easy to measure for thawing and baking, so this method seems most suited for the home baker.

Results: Whole frozen bananas were hard to cut up and didnt blend completely into smoothies, but this method worked well when a recipe called for a specific number of bananas for baking.

What Is Flash Freeze

Flash freeze is the method to freeze anything individually without getting them freeze into one big chunk.

If you slice bananas and freeze them together in freezer safe bag or container then they will stick to each other and get frozen into one big chunk. It makes it difficult during future use.

Instead, you need to arrange sliced banana separate from each other, freeze them first individually and then throw them into container or bag.

Flash freezing help at the time of future use, as you can easily get the desired quantity for the recipe.

Step 1 Peel And Slice

Yes, you have to peel your bananas you probably figured that out. BUT the best way to prep bananas for being frozen is NOT to just throw them in the freezer and call it a day. You want to slice them into coins that are about ½ and inch thick.

Highly recommend using a good, sharp ceramic knife to do this to make it quick and easy!

Is It Better To Eat Ripe Or Unripe Bananas

How to Freeze Bananas

If a banana turns brown, you shouldnt assume that it has gone bad.

You better peel it. Just to be sure. If flesh has a brown color, you better avoid eating it.

A brown banana or a banana with black spots in the peel, actually has more antioxidants, than a green under-ripe banana.

Additionally, a ripe banana contains significant amounts of fiber and polyphenol compounds.

Also, ripe bananas contain a high content of simple sugars making it suitable for sucrose replacement in bakery products, like cakes.

As long as you dont see mold, theyre safe to eat.

The Right Blender For Smoothies

There is no wrong blender for smoothies. Youll want a blender that has a fairly strong motor and can easily break down ice or frozen fruit. Depending on the other uses and frequency of use, a blender may or may not be an item youd like to splurge on.

My favorite picks

Over $100

Under $100

  • The Ninja Blender is a great price for a blender and perfect if youre looking for a solid blender under $100! This blender has great reviews with great reviews!

Under $30

  • If you dont blend a ton, it wouldnt make sense to invest in an expensive appliance. Consider a simple hand blender I use mine to blend soups like my 20 Minute Broccoli Cheese Soup.
  • I also have a magic bullet blender thats perfect for smoothies, blending spices and I even use it to make fresh bread crumbs.

Step 2 Prepare For Freezing

Once you have them sliced its time to spread them onto a baking sheet in ONE even layer. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper first and fill the sheet with your banana coins, making sure to not stack them. If you stack them it will be hard to break them apart once frozen!

Freezing them like this ensures that you have frozen bananas that are separate and not one big mushy mess when you go to take them from the freezer!

Why You Need This Recipe

  • Bananas are ripe when they are soft to the touch, have brown spots on them, have a mild or strong odor of bananas, or have turned brown around the edges. Some types of bananas may not have obvious signs of ripening, so you do need to keep an eye on them.
  • Youll know when a banana is not ripe when it is hard, green, or has no odor. Sometimes it can take up to several days for a banana to ripen on the countertop. If you want to help a banana ripe faster, you can always place them in a paper bag for a few days.
  • The problem is that when a banana ripens, it can go bad pretty quickly. A banana is over-ripe when the skin turns black or it becomes mushy.
  • But, dont worry! You can use frozen ripe bananas in so many ways, including in smoothies, ice creams, dairy-free soft serves, oatmeal, and in baked goods.

How Do You Freeze Them Without Turning Brown

If youve had frozen bananas turn brown before, that probably means that they have been exposed to too much air in the freezer. This can happen when the container that they are stored in doesnt get sealed properly.

To prevent your bananas from browning, make sure they are stored in a securely sealed airtight container, and use them within 3 months for the best flavor and texture.

Technically, frozen bananas should be safe to eat for 6 months or more, as long as they are stored properly, but thats usually when they start to turn darker and more unappealing, in my experience.

If you cut your banana into 1-inch pieces before freezing, Ive found that 1 cup of thick banana slices is roughly equivalent to 1 large banana. If you cut your bananas thinner than 1-inch, it may be closer to 3/4 cup of slices, since they will fit more compactly into a measuring cup.

Ok. So maybe you know this already, but when I first started making my breakfast shakes, I wasnt sure how to freeze bananas.

So after some trial and error, Ive perfected it to an art form.

But I figured if I didnt really know the best way at first, I should go ahead and share this little tip.

Supplies? All you need other than your bananas is a ziploc bag.

First, peel your bananas. This is the secret. If you dont peel them before hand, youll have a big mess and its not fun. Get the fun out of the way first and peel like a hungry chimpanzee.

Next, and second most importantly, break your bananas in half. I break them in half because then they fit perfectly into my awesome Ninja Blender Single Serve containers.

If you dont have a Ninja, I LOVE mine! Im serious as a 19th century, one room school teacher in a car of clowns. The personal sized containers blend ice and frozen fruit like nobodys bidness.

Then, just plop your bananas in the bag. Make sure they are flat and in one layer. If you want, you can suck all the air to sort of vacuum pack them.

    Freeze for several hours.

How To Freeze Banana To Use In A Smoothie

So now you know you can use frozen bananas in your smoothie.

But whats the best way to freeze your bananas for your smoothie?

    • Break or slice your banana up before putting it into the freezer. If your blender isnt high powered, putting a whole frozen banana straight in can lead to big chunks of banana instead of a smooth and creamy smoothie!
    • If you have room, freeze the banana on a baking tray or baking paper for at least 30 minutes before putting into a storage container or freezer bag. This will minimise the sticking together of slices or pieces
    • Use your frozen bananas up within 6 months. Over time, the taste and quality of a frozen fruit can decline. So its best to use your bananas up within 6 months
