Banana Smoothie Bowl Recipe

2 INGREDIENT smoothie bowl

Ice cream for breakfast, anyone? Me! Says absolutely everyone! Best part? It is made of all fruits! It is a healthy alternative to a delicious breakfast, I mean you don’t even need a cheat day!

Works for breakfast or a refreshing dessert. This bowl has 4 frozen bananas, a handful of blueberries and I added some granola and sliced bananas on top for some texture and because it looks really cute! And that’s it.

Frozen bananas makes the creamiest texture and is mesmerizing to watch in the blender You can add anything to the bananas. So many variations! Just add your toddler’s favorite fruits to change the color and make it more fun for little ones to eat!

Now you know, don’t throw away those ripe bananas, remove the peel and freeze them for when you are craving some delicious, easy to make smoothie breakfast.

Oh! And a great plus I have to say, its great for teething babies!

INGREDIENTS:

  • Blend frozen bananas until you get a smooth consistency

  • Add handful of blueberries

  • Plate and top with banana slices and granola for crunchy texture.

  • You can add any fruits to change flavors and colors to your preference. Frozen fruits allow the smoothie/ice cream consistency so just add a frozen fruit base and enjoy!

Add Mango To The Blender To Get Your Smoothie Bowl Started

The first thing to do when making this smoothie bowl is simply add your frozen fruits to the blender. As for why Epstein picked mango and banana specifically, as opposed to frozen berries for instance, she shared with Mashed, “I chose mango and banana because I have made other recipes with that combination in the past. So I know it’s tasty! I also needed fruits that had a pale color so that the blue would shine through.”

Ah, yes. The blue. We’re almost ready for that step, which dials up the magic of this versatile recipe.

    Are Smoothie Bowls Really Healthy

Whenever you hear a question about whether a particular food is healthy, the only way to answer it usefully is to add, compared to what? Smoothie bowls are far healthier than breakfasts full of white sugar and white flour, fried animal foods, and artificial ingredients. But what about comparing smoothie bowls to other less processed plant-based meals?

Since smoothie bowls are typically thicker than regular smoothies, they may be more nutrient-dense, and better for blood sugar control since youre likely to consume them more slowly. Fruit is a delicious way to consume lots of fiber, water, antioxidants, and other important phytochemicals that keep your cells functioning and your good gut bacteria happy. But a fruit smoothie can overwhelm your body with a rapid influx of fruit sugar, especially if you gulp it down fast. If you take some time to savor your smoothie bowl, that can help to mitigate the problem. Raw nuts and seeds, in moderation, can provide healthy fats and slow down the absorption of sugar into our bloodstream. And the entire family of green smoothie bowls features veggies like kale, spinach, and other leafy greens, which pack even more of an antioxidant punch.

How To Make A Smoothie Thicker

There are a couple secrets to perfecting that soft-serve texture. Instead of using fresh fruit, opt for frozen, it helps the texture stay thick. This is one reason I like to buy fresh berries in bulk and freeze them for quick and healthy recipes like this one.

Another trick to creating thicker smoothies is to use less liquid. It can be tempting to douse the ingredients to make everything blend smoothly, this is also where a Blendtec or high-speed blender comes in super handy.

How To Make A Smoothie Bowl Yummy And Pretty

    Super Green Smoothie Bowl

Making a gorgeous smoothie bowl that tastes great should be fun. I have a few tips for building your layers like a pro.

    • Keep flavors balanced Is the smoothie sweet? Add tart fruit or salty nuts. If the smoothie is more tart, add sweeter toppings.
    • Pay attention to texture Your tongue will appreciate a combination of crunchy, crisp, soft, smooth etc. It also makes them naturally pretty!
    • Think about nutrition A balanced meal that keeps you satisfied has protein, natural sugar, some carbohydrates, and fiber. Fruit, nuts, greens , chocolate, and cereals are just a few combination suggestions.
    • Layer thoughtfully Making them beautiful is fun, but also think about the eating! Add your layers so you get a little bit of everything in every bite.

I always have so much fun experimenting with fruit and topping combinations, and I bet you will too. Dont wait a second longer to find your new favorite breakfast from the recipes included in this collection.

    Where To Find Smoothie Bowls

Aside from Instagram, that is. These days, there are lots of places that have smoothie bowls on their menus. You can get them at juice bars and smoothie shops, upscale cafes, and some vegan or vegetarian restaurants. Youll even sometimes find them in airports.

Commercial smoothie bowls come with two problems, however. First, they can be really expensive. Second, theyre often formulated to be more delicious and pretty than nutritious, so you may end up eating a lot of sugar and empty calories, along with artificial ingredients in the toppings. Make sure you know whats really in a restaurant smoothie bowl before assuming all those colors are truly healthy.

The safest and healthiest way to enjoy smoothie bowls is to make your own.

    Preparing A Smoothie Bowl

    1. Freeze bananas.

Start with frozen bananas as a base.

If you have a lot of freezer space, its best to go to the store when bananas are on sale and buy several bunches. Then, break them up into gallon zip-closure bags and freeze them. This works best when theyve been frozen at least overnight.

    2. Blend frozen bananas and liquid.

Toss frozen banana pieces and at least 1/8 cup of liquid into the food processor and start pulsing to break the banana up a bit, then pulse and hold or set to on and let the processor do its thing. This may take a while, but be patient!

With a small flexible silicone spatula or just an ordinary spoon, feel free to pause the food processor and scrape the bottom of the mixer, and stir whats in there, and keep blending. Thatll help push the contents around so everything eventually gets to the blades and gets pureed.

If your mixture turns into a huge ball and rolls around in your food processor, you need more liquid! Just keep adding little by little through the spout of the food processor until it gets to the desired consistency.

When the mixture is done, it should be as creamy and perfect as the most amazing soft serve or frozen custard youve had. You can test it by dragging the bottom of a spoon around in the mixture. Does it look and feel lovely? Then its ready!

    Tips For Perfect Smoothie Bowls

    • Your Acai Bowl is best if enjoyed as soon as you make it. If you want to make it in advance, pour the smoothie base into individual containers and freeze without the toppings. To eat later, allow the smoothie bowl to thaw for 10-15 minutes and give it a stir before adding your toppings.
    • Customize your own acai bowl by trying other fruits like mango, apple, papaya and kiwi. Sometimes I like to add a beet to amp up the nutrition factor. Beets provide tremendous energy and oodles of antioxidants!
    • If you cant have dairy or are looking to make a vegan smoothie bowl, simply substitute your favorite dairy-free yogurt.
    • Keep the sugar low by skipping the honey. I find if I add a super ripe banana theres no need to add honey or other sweeteners.

Blend Protein Powder Or Greens First

3 ingredient Strawberry Banana Smoothie Bowl | SweetTreats

If you want to add protein powder or spinach to your smoothie, blend it with a little bit of liquid first. This will help breakdown the greens easily before you add in other ingredients that will make your smoothie thick. This also works well if youre using protein powder, so you can avoid any grittiness in your smoothie bowl.

    What Are Smoothie Bowls

If you dont know what a smoothie bowl is, you are not alone. A year ago, when my smoothies were super thick, the kind that did not sip through a straw well, I either reblended the smoothie with a little more liquid or poured it into my cup and waited until the thick mixture would melt a little until my straw and my lungs could handle the sip. Now I know better. Those thick smoothies are perfect for smoothie bowls!

So whats the difference between sipping a smoothie through a straw and eating it with a spoon? Good question and up until recently, I wasnt sure either, but thanks to Instagram and the #smoothiebowl tag I got schooled on the art of smoothie bowls.

Instead of a smooth, liquid texture, smoothie bowls are a thick blend of frozen fruit, veggies, superfoods, and topped with more healthy ingredients such as chia seeds, seeds, shredded coconut, fruit, etc. They contain more fruit and less liquid which gives it an ice cream-like texture you can eat with a spoon, making it a more substantial meal and fun to eat.

I usually have them for breakfast, but you can easily pack a smoothie for lunch too! Its a wonderful cold treat to have at the office after a few hours of work. Trust me, there is NOTHING like an ice-cold mocha smoothie bowl in the middle of the workday.

How To Make The Best Smoothie Bowl

Start with your smoothie base. It can be whatever fruit combo you like or have on hand.

I used 1 ½ cups of a frozen berry blend and fresh bananas. I also added two tablespoons of peanut butter for added protein . You could also add a scoop of protein powder instead .

Toss it all in a blender cup with unsweetened non-dairy milk or water, and blend until smooth and creamy. Pour into serving bowls and top with your favorite toppings .

Next, add the veggies. Leafy greens like spinach and kale are common, and can impart a bright green hue to the smoothie as long as you use light-colored fruit like pineapple and mango. Start adding blueberries and cherries to greens, and youll get a color that wont win you any followers on Instagram. Nor is it likely to ever become Pantones color of the year. Of course, if your goal is a healthy and tasty bowl, that might not be a problem for you. Other vegetables can offer different color and taste profiles, including beets, carrots, celery, and even bell peppers.

    Nutritious Additions And Toppings

To incorporate some protein into your base, try adding pea or whey powder, hemp or chia seeds, or nut butters. You can also add protein rich nuts and seeds as crunchy elements on top. Other nutritious and textural toppings include cacao nibs, shredded coconut, fresh cut fruit, dried fruits, granola, avocado slices, and sprouts.

    Are Acai Bowls Healthy

Acai berries are a natural superfood, but because fruit can be high in sugar you can definitely pull back on the added sugar or skip the banana. Also, I use a low fat yogurt for the acai bowl but you can substitute with fat free if you want to lower the fat content.

Overall, the acai bowl is a healthy way to start the day if you dont over indulge. Everything in moderation. Right?

What Is The Difference Between A Smoothie And A Smoothie Bowl

    Berry Banana Smoothie Bowl

Smoothies are drinks made in a blender, poured into a glass or cup and enjoyed by sipping or drinking with a straw. While they can vary in consistency from thinner to thicker, smoothies are always drinkable from a straw. Smoothie bowls on the other hand are meant to be enjoyed out of a bowl and eaten with a spoon!

The consistency of the smoothie portion of a smoothie bowl is usually much thicker than a traditional smoothie, and can range from a thick soup-like consistency to a scoop-able sorbet consistency. Smoothie bowls are also always topped with garnishes like fresh berries, sliced banana, nuts, seeds, granola, or other superfood toppings .
