Can The Vitamin C In Emergen
Using vitamin C to help combat the common cold or flu is a tale as old as time but how effective is it really? Dr. Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease physician and a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, told Women’s Health, “Emergen-C is a vitamin C supplement, and there’s no evidence that it benefits people with the cold or influenza or affects your propensity to get the cold or the flu.”
Adalja’s assessment is shown in a study that looked at the effect of vitamin C supplements on preventing colds. Published in Cochrane Database Systematic Review, the study found a “failure of vitamin C supplementation to reduce the incidence of colds in the normal population.” As such, the study revealed that the use of “routine mega-dose prophylaxis is not rationally justified for community use.”
Adalja told Women’s Health he fears that people may put too much stock in vitamin C supplements and avoid getting a flu shot, an actual proven preventive measure to avoid catching the flu.
Vitamin C Vs Ascorbic Acid
Its really important to get this straight, right off the bat. Vitamin C and ascorbic acid are two different substances. That distinction can be confusing, especially because if you walk down the pharmacy aisle, or even check the supplements in a health food store, youre going to see the two used interchangeably on some labels.
To clarify, Vitamin C is the good stuff. Its the complete vitamin found in an orange, broccoli, or spinach.
Is ascorbic acid really a good substitute for the Vitamin C found in plant food?
Ascorbic acid, on the other hand, is one component of Vitamin C, which can be isolated and synthetically manufactured en masse. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi won a Nobel Prize in 1930 when he discovered and isolated ascorbic acid from red peppers.
But interestingly enough, even in 1930 Gyorgyi noted that the ascorbic acid wasnt as bioavailable or active when it was removed from the red pepper.2 And that was just the tip of the iceberg for this synthetic vitamin.
Some People Use Emergen
Anyone who’s ever spent a night on the town drinking with their friends knows the value of a tried-and-true hangover cure. While taking a couple Tylenol and drinking a glass of water before going to bed after an alcohol-fueled night out may work for some, other people need a little something extra to fight the next day’s hangover headache and general tiredness.
Speaking with Insider, Los Angeles-based bartender Kellie Norris said her go-to hangover fix is a fizzy cure-all. “One packet of Emergen-C and one packet of Alka Seltzer dissolved in a glass of club soda works as a next-day cure,” Norris revealed.
And it seems Norris is not alone in using Emergen-C as a hangover remedy. Cosmopolitan dubbed the dietary supplement a “hangover hack every twentysomething should know,” recommending readers to combine the orange powder with a vitamin B complex pill. “The vitamin B complex replenishes what alcohol depletes and the fizzy vitamin C helps with overall wellness,” Cosmopolitan writer Laura Beck explained. Of course, these and really all other hangover hacks should be taken with a grain of salt.

According To Experts There’s No Real Way To Tell If Emergen
While Emergen-C definitely has a large fanbase, the orange vitamin powder certainly has its fair share of critics as well. Of course, the majority of said critics are skeptical of the product’s advertised “immune support” formula, which has not been approved by the FDA nor been tested for safety nor efficacy. Subsequently, those who swear by the fizzy citrus drink may find trying to convince a naysayer of Emergen-C’s health benefits to be frustrating and perhaps even impossible.
According to Howard Sesso, an epidemiologist and associate professor of medicine at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, without experiments specifically testing the effectiveness of Emergen-C , there’s really no way of proving how or why it works.
Sesso told HuffPost, “It would be very difficult to know, even if it did work, is it because of Vitamin C, or is it because of Zinc?” The epidemiologist continued, musing, “Is it because of something completely unrelated, or something that we don’t yet know about?”

If you want to make a meal using foods high in vitamin C benefits, then plant based is the way to go. Vegetables are a great source of vitamins and minerals, and can actually taste good too! If soup is your thing, try a vegetarian tortilla soup, vegan pumpkin soup, or bell pepper + sweet potato soup. I use Emergen C in my Vitamin C smoothie recipe because it makes it easy to get the right amount. They are small packets to add to water with vitamins and minerals to support your immune system.
I use the Super Orange original Emergen C, but they have several other flavors. You could make an Emergen C smoothie recipe with coconut pineapple, cranberry pomegranate, lemon lime, raspberry, pink lemonade, strawberry kiwi, or tangerine.
You would use the same immune booster smoothie recipe and use different fruits.
I like using Emergen C to support my immune system, but I’m not crazy about the taste. I’ll drink it when I need to, but this Emergen C smoothie recipe tastes better than using the packet in water.
Emergen C is for kids 14 years old and older and adults. Two of mine are over 14, so they can drink the a vitamin C smoothie recipe.

What Happens If You Take Expired Emergen
A lot of us are familiar with the act of digging out an old bottle of vitamins and taking them anyway. What’s the harm, right? Well, their efficacy and vitamin content can deteriorate over time. This means, according to Dr. Frederick Hecht, professor of medicine at the University of California, that if you’re taking them past their expiration date, “you will not get the full amount of vitamin labeled on the package” .
However, you shouldn’t be too worried about the safety of taking expired Emergen-C.
