Ingredients To Make Blueberry Banana Smoothie

THE BEST Blueberry Banana Smoothie for a Healthy Day

Blueberries: This is a key ingredient to make the recipe. Go for organic if you can and pick large plump blueberries for best flavor. If blueberries are out of season, you can also use frozen blueberries.

Bananas: Bananas are one of the most popular smoothie ingredients, and for good reason. They thicken a smoothie, sweeten it and also give it a creamy texture. Thats why I add bananas to my blueberry smoothie. You can substitute the banana though for dates, pears, avocado or even applesauce.

Almond milk: This is my liquid of choice, but you can use regular cow milk and you can even use water. I love the rich taste the almond milk gives the smoothie, and its a great source of calcium if you buy the right kind.

Almond butter: You can use any nut butter of choice. I like using almond butter to thicken the smoothie, add a nutty flavor and bulk it up with some protein.

Hemp seeds: I try adding a superfood to most of my smoothies, and hemp seeds truly are a power seed! Each tablespoon of hemp seeds is about 5 grams of protein, which is great if youre drinking this blueberry banana smoothie after workout for muscle recovery.

You can pretty much just throw the blueberries, bananas, almond milk, almond butter and hemps seeds together in a blender. Then, blend all the ingredients together for about one minute until its all smooth and creamy!

Optional Peanut Butter Blueberry Banana Smoothie Additions

Feel free to truly make this smoothie your own! Here are a few nutritional suggestions for this blueberry banana smoothie:

  • Flaxseed meal: this is one of my favorite ingredients to add to smoothies for a little boost of fiber and minerals. Its especially great for nursing mamas as flaxseed can help increase milk supply. Usually a tablespoon is plenty! Heres a brand I love.
  • Chia seeds: add in a tablespoon of chia seeds to your smoothie for a boost of healthy fats and fiber.
  • Hemp seeds: feel free to throw in those hemp seeds lurking in your cupboard for a boost of healthy fats, omegas and minerals.
  • Oats: add about 1/3 cup oats to your smoothie for an additional thickness & heartiness. Do not use steel cut oats as they will not blend well.
  • Organic spinach: if youre looking to get more greens in your smoothie, try adding a few cups of spinach. It may turn the smoothie a slightly brown color, but you wont be able to taste the spinach at all.
  • Greek yogurt: add a boost of protein with a scoop of Greek yogurt . You may have to reduce the almond milk to 3/4 cup in this smoothie when adding yogurt.
  • Protein powder or collagen peptides: another great way to add some protein. I recommend a plain or vanilla flavored protein powder in this recipe. Here is a great plant-based option.

The Ultimate Banana Blueberry Smoothie For A Healthy Breakfast Treat

Super Thick Blueberry Banana Smoothies (Dairy Free Option ...

This banana blueberry smoothie is adapted from my Wild Blue Smoothie recipe in Go Dairy Free: The Ultimate Guide and Cookbook. I originally shared this popular recipe back in 2006, and it has become a family favorite. Here are a few quick notes and tips about this recipe:

Go Green Dont worry, you wont taste or see the spinach! Spinach is a great beginner green for smoothies. It provides extra vitamins and minerals, but its the most tender and mildly-flavored green. You wont detect it beneath the bold fruit flavors and the purple hue of the dark berries masks the green color.

Start Slow The reason I add half the milk beverage first is to ensure the spinach fully blends in. If you add too much liquid, the leaves tend to just spin around even with some high power blenders! But a thicker base allows even wimpy blenders to pulverize those greens.

Choose Your Consistency As is, this is a drinkable smoothie. I give the option to add ice for a thicker blend, like the one pictured. If you want a really thick shake, you can use a frozen banana. But you might need to add a little more liquid.

Sweeten Only as Needed The sweetness of this banana blueberry smoothie will depend on the sweetness of your fruit. Usually, Im able to omit the sweetener or add just a small pinch of pure stevia extract. I just recommend that you add the sweetener last to avoid adding more than you need. Sometimes its surprisingly sweet as is!

Cook’s Tips And Recipe Variations:

  • Using frozen fruit is the key to a thick, creamy smoothie. I like to slice overripe bananas, wrap them individually, and then stash them in the freezer to grab for smoothies whenever we need them.
  • You can start with fresh blueberries or you can purchase a bag of unsweetened frozen blueberries in the freezer section at the grocery store.
  • Add a squeeze of lemon juice to the smoothie for a bright, fresh burst of flavor.
  • We use vanilla flavored Greek-style yogurt, but you can substitute with plain Greek yogurt to reduce the amount of sugar in the smoothie. If you’re using plain yogurt, I suggest adding a dash of vanilla extract for flavor, as well as a bit of honey or other sweetener of choice .
  • I use 2% milk in the smoothies because that’s what my boys prefer however, you can substitute with any variety of milk or non-dairy milk alternative .
  • Make a Banana Blueberry Spinach Smoothie by adding a handful of baby spinach leaves to the blender. It won’t change the taste of the smoothie, but it will add some great nutrients!
  • Prepare a Blueberry Banana Peanut Butter Smoothie by adding a tablespoon or two of peanut butter to the blender for staying power and healthy fats.
  • Make it a Blueberry Banana Oatmeal Smoothie by including a ¼-cup of raw oats in the blender. It will thicken the drink, add fiber, and make it even more filling.

How To Add Protein To A Smoothiewithout Powder

This blueberry banana smoothie is all fruit and water! So if youre using it as a meal or want to back protein into your snack, youll want to add a bit more to the mix. Here are our favorite ways to add proteinwithout powder:

  • Greek yogurt: Yogurt adds quite a bit of protein, and probiotics for a healthy gut. Try blending in ¼ cup to ½ cup, to taste. If necessary, add a few splashes of water to get it to blend. Note that it will lighten the color to be a lighter lavender, depending on how much you add.
  • Almond or cashew butter. Almond butter or cashew butter work better here than peanut butter. Use about 1 tablespoon, 2 for a stronger flavor. This addition dulls the color a bit, so keep that in mind as well.

How To Make A Blueberry Banana Smoothie

Step One: Add the almond milk and orange juice to the bottom of a high-powered blender.

Step Two: Next, add the frozen blueberries, frozen banana, and Greek yogurt to the blender.

Step Three: Now, add any additional ingredients you would like to include like nut butter or protein powder.

Step Four: Blend everything for 30 seconds to a minute until the smoothie is completely smooth and creamy. Pour into a class and enjoy!

Tips For Making This Blueberry Banana Smoothie

Here are a few of my favorite tips for making this blueberry banana smoothie creamy and delicious:

  • Using frozen fruit is best as it helps keeps the smoothie cold and thick. Sometimes ice doesnt blend as well, so its best to skip unless absolutely necessary. If you only have fresh fruit, try adding 1 cup frozen cauliflower as it blends much easier than ice.
  • Dont be afraid to add more liquid if your smoothie is too thick or wont fully blend. High powered blenders tend to blend frozen fruit much better, so if you have a regular or personal size blender, you may need to add more milk.
  • Start the blender on low speed, then gradually increase the speed to high to help blend all ingredients. End with the blender on low speed.
  • How To Meal Prep This Smoothie In Advance

Meal prepping your smoothies in advance is a great way to save time in the morning at breakfast time or in the afternoon when you need a quick and filling snack.

To meal prep a few smoothies at a time, just place all of the smoothie ingredients, minus the liquid, into a small freezer safe storage bag. Place the bag in the freezer until you are ready to use.

When you are ready to make a smoothie, add the liquid to your blender and then pour in the contents of your frozen smoothie bag. Blend on high until completely smooth and thats it!

    How Do You Thicken Smoothies

There are two ways to thicken smoothies with ice or with frozen fruit.

Frozen bananas are the best fruit for making very thick and creamy smoothies.

Adding ice can be another way to thicken smoothies if you are using fresh fruit, but the texture wont be quite the same.

Easy, delicious, and always a favorite!

Creamy Blueberry and Banana Smoothie. This is a really easy and quick recipe and a great way to enjoy blueberries!

The simplicity of this blueberry and banana smoothie means that it is no effort to make, and what I have managed to do is get a ‘milkshake’ creaminess, but without using cream or ice cream.

This smoothie recipe is flexible so you can make it as thick or thin a consistency as you wish. I have made it so you can use a straw . I’ve also used soya milk, simply because that is my preference. You can, of course, use regular cow’s milk, almond milk, or any milk you prefer. If you want to make the smoothie thicker than I have, simply add less milk than stated. Just add a little, see the consistency, and continue adding enough milk to your preference.
