Smoothies are a convenient and colorful way to start your day, but some recipes can be filled with added sugar and fat. For a healthy meal or snack, stick to the basics: fruit and veggies.

Every successful smoothie contains two main ingredients: fruit and/or vegetables and a liquid, such as fruit juice, vegetable juice, or milk. Other possible ingredients include yogurt, nut butter, seeds, spices, herbs, and more. Many smoothies also include a few ice cubes to keep the mixture nice and cold. Often, recipes can be tweaked to meet different dietary requirements or tastesfeel free to swap out dairy products for non-dairy ones or change up the spices and juices.

All of these smoothies recipes are loaded with good-for-you vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber, and protein. They’re made with only natural ingredients and range in flavors from mango to chocolate to veggie. You’re sure to find a breakfast smoothie for every day of the week.

How Do You Make A Frozen Fruit Smoothie

I personally have a blender meant just for smoothies but its not necessary any blending machine will work. Toss your blend of frozen fruit, juice, and Greek yogurt into the blender and mix until smooth. I chose to use blueberries, cherries, raspberries, and mango for a tart, yet sweet, blend of fruits.

This recipe makes two servings but can easily be adjusted to make only one serving, or more servings, whatever you desire. Simply cut the recipe in half for one serving. If you double the amount of ingredients called for, remember that it will bump it to four servings since this is enough to make two servings. Each serving is around 16 ounces each.

There are a lot of great juices out there that would work well in your fruit smoothie. I typically use apple juice because its readily available and a neutral flavor base, but other great options are

    • White grape juice
    • Pineapple juice
    • Cranberry juice

You can even use milk, almond milk or coconut milk instead of juice for your smoothie.

I typically use whatever odds and ends of fruit I happen to have in my freezer. You can really mix and match however you like here, just use the same quantity of the fruits listed in the recipe. Some other great fruit options to use are

    • Banana
    • Strawberries

    Tips For Making Smoothies

    • Not all blenders are created equal. This doesnt mean that you have to have the newest, most expensive blender on the market. In fact, I wrote a whole cookbook that I tested using a cheap $15 blender from the local big box store. But the truth of the matter is that most smoothies wont be as smooth in a cheaper blender as they are in a more powerful blender. Frozen fruit can take awhile to break down into the smoothie if you dont have a high powered blender, so just be aware that it may take a little longer in a cheaper blender. Just have patience! I have a Blendtec that I love, and many people also love the Vitamix. Or you can get a Ninja blender for under $100.
    • If you are using a high powered blender, you can just throw everything in any order. If you have a cheaper blender, put the liquid in first and the frozen fruit last.
    • Start your blender on a low speed and work up to a higher speed.

How To Build The Perfect Smoothie

Ask Away Blog: Easy Summer Fruit Smoothie Recipe

Want to know how to create your perfect healthy veggie and fruit smoothies? It all comes down to the ingredients you use:

    The Base

Were talking about the liquid you use as the base of the smoothie:

    • Water is low in calories but has no flavor. Youll need stronger-flavored ingredients to make a water-based smoothie delicious.
    • Juice has more sugar but adds good flavor, making it ideal for veggie-heavy smoothies.
    • Yogurt and milk dont blend too well with most veggies, but youll love them in fruit-based smoothies.
    • Coconut milk, coconut water, and almond milk are all good with fruit though youll have to be careful which veggies you mix in.

    The Main Flavor

Once you have the base, you have to choose the fruits that will give your smoothie the primary flavor. A few fruits with strong flavor include:

    • Berries

Apples, pears, and grapes all have milder flavors.

    The Healthy Factor

Of course, to make truly healthy veggie and fruit smoothies, you need to bring the green. That means adding veggies like:

    • Celery
    • Parsley
    • Cucumber

But remember, all of these vegetables have their flavors. Some have a very strong green flavor while others have milder flavors.

Choose the veggies that match with the fruits and liquid you are adding into your smoothie!

I love fruit smoothies. I love making them up for breakfast, for a snack, or for something healthier when Im craving something sweet.

One of my best friends and I bonded the first time over drinking smoothies together. She and I had class together my first semester at BYU, it was a freshman English class, and I hadnt gotten my meal card yet so after class she offered to buy me a smoothie from Jamba Juice on campus. We were best friends ever since.

Smoothies are great because they are so easy! And you can you can whip them together with just a few ingredients. You can choose what kind of fruit, juice, yogurt, etc to have all types of different flavors of smoothies.

You can have it be a berry smoothie, a tropical smoothie, banana orange, strawberry pineapple, etc. Try different kinds of fruits and yogurts to change the flavor.

    The Right Smoothie Ratios

Start your smoothie with two mugfuls of a liquid base. This can be milk, or a dairy-free alternative such as soya or almond milk, natural or flavoured yogurt, fruit juice, or for a tropical flavoured smoothie, low-fat coconut milk or coconut water. It’s important to add the liquid to your blender before adding the fruit, as this will prevent the blade from getting damaged.

Next, add about three quarters of a mug of your chosen fruit. Banana is a great base flavour for any smoothie, and will give you a lovely creamy texture. Other fruits that work well are berries, mango, peaches, plums, nectarines, grated apple or pear, and melon. You may have to add more fruit or liquid, depending on the type of fruit you choose. Play around until you have a texture you like. Add a squeeze of honey, maple syrup or agave syrup if your smoothie needs it, and finally add a few ice cubes to the blender for a thick and frosty smoothie.

    Best Blender For Smoothies

First things first, lets talk about the blender situation. I know there are hundreds of blenders on the market and it can be very daunting to find the right one for you. One thing I have learned with the handful of blenders that Ive owned is that quality matters. Usually, quality and price coincide and its totally true.

Ive found that the more expensive and higher quality blender I have, the more success I have with what I am makingespecially smoothies. The most recent and BEST blender I have ever had is a Vitamix.

We have the Vitamix 5200and it runs you about $430 on Amazon. I do not have a single bad thing to say about this beast. Its super powerful, easy to clean, and it makes making smoothies along with other things a breeze. I can tell you right now that this is the best blender I have ever owned and theres no turning back.

What Do I Use To Sweeten A Smoothie

How to Make a Delicious Fruit Smoothie

All of these smoothies here use frozen fruit as a base, which adds a nice baseline of sweetness that you can build on if your tastebuds would like. My recommendation is to blend up your smoothie without any added sweetener, then taste. Add in honey or maple syrup to taste. Many times, I dont need to add anything! Another great natural option for sweetening: pitted Medjool dates. Throw in one or two of those bad boys and let the blender do its thing. Youd be amazed at how sweet your smoothie will be!

What Do You Put In A Fruit Smoothie

I have a bit of a love affair with smoothies. And the thing that I love the most is that the sky is the limit when it comes to what ingredients you use.

For a fruit smoothie, I like to use frozen fruit when possible. Frozen fruit is readily available at the grocery store, but it is also super simple to freeze fruit yourself at home, too. To keep things basic, you really only need a liquid you can use anything from water to milk to coconut milk to fruit juice and the fruit. If you are using fresh fruit, or if you like a thicker or icier consistency, youll want to add a bit of ice, too.

What Other Healthy Ingredients Can You Add In

The great thing with smoothies is that its easy to slip in an extra healthy ingredient or two without it being easily noticeable which is especially wonderful when you have kids.

A few of my favorites are fresh spinach, kale, chia seeds and ground flax seeds. My kids love their smoothies and think they are a treat. They have no idea that they are enjoying something super nutritious or drinking spinach. I love being sneaky like that!
