How To Make A Strawberry Smoothie Without Yogurt

How to make healthy smoothies with frozen fruit (3 recipes!)

Most smoothies use either yogurt or juice and ice as a base to make it creamy. You dont have to choose one or the other though. Juice spikes up the fruit sugar content unnecessarily so always try and stay away from smoothies based on juice.

Yogurt is a great source of protein if you dont have any dairy tolerance issues. If you do, however, you dont have to go for the juice option. There is other ways. You can use coconut milk for example to obtain that creamy texture and flavor. I use light coconut milk for my smoothies so they dont sit in my stomach too heavy.

Does The Fruit Need To Be Frozen In A Fruit Smoothie

If you want to make a frozen fruit smoothie and dont have any frozen fruit on hand, add ice to your mixture. If you dont add frozen fruit or ice, your smoothie wont be thick and frosty. If you dont mind this, then youll be fine to continue. I highly recommend using frozen fruit because it tends to blend better than straight ice. Its not pleasant to bite down on chunks of ice in a smoothie!

This fruit smoothie recipe is so easy that we make them most days during the hot weather. You wont hear me complaining. Theyre a lot healthier than ice cream and if making them keeps the want for ice cream at bay, Im all for it!

Basic Steps For How To Make A Fruit Smoothie

Frozen Fruit Smoothies

1. Add your frozen fruit of choice

In this case, we used blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries. However, any type of frozen fruit will work great!

2. Add a yogurt or banana base to thicken

Plain greek yogurt and/or bananas are great for thickening smoothies.

3. Add protein powder

Adding protein powder helps sweeten the smoothie and, of course, adds protein. This is always an optional step!

4. Add your milk of choice

Our favorite is unsweetened almond milk, but cashew milk, coconut milk, oat milk, and regular dairy milk are all great options as well.

To make the smoothie: Simply blend everything in a single serving blender and enjoy! Another option is to pour the smoothie into mason jars and freeze for quick smoothies throughout the week. Simply thaw in the refrigerator a few hours before youre ready to drink it !

Is Greek Yogurt Healthy In Smoothies

Yes, using greek yogurt instead of frozen yogurts or flavored yogurts is the healthiest choice.

Fat, sugar, and cholesterol-free greek yogurt is an excellent choice to add to drinks.

Add other kinds of yogurt to increase the calories as well as increase the carbs.

Greek yogurt is full of protein with no fats or sugars that keep the calories low but provides sufficient nutrients.

Why Not Freeze Your Smoothie

How to make smoothies: Frozen fruit smoothies: Dole Strawberries peaches and bananas: Easy smoothie

Most people think that putting a blended smoothie directly into the freezer is a good idea when they are finished making it.

Unfortunately, this actually stops many nutrients from being able to enter the body because they solidify in these ice cubes which can prevent them from reaching cells.

How To Make A Smoothie

A smoothie is so much more than blended fruit. It’s an art with all of its different elements blending perfectly together. Just in case these 29 smoothies aren’t enough, here is our guide to making the perfect smoothie.

Pick your fruit.

We chose strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and bananas to be our base, but any combo of fruit is great. Make a tropical smoothie of pineapple, mango, and banana or add blueberry and peach to switch it up a bit for a summer twist. Aim for about 3 cups of fruit.

Fresh or frozen fruit?

For smoothies, frozen fruit is best. It blends up thicker than fresh fruit and gives you a really cold smoothie to enjoy after blending. If you don’t have frozen fruit, freeze your fresh fruit for 30 minutes before blending or add about 1 cup of ice and blend until smooth!

Add a thickener.

We use unsweetened Greek yogurt in our smoothie, but peanut butter, almond butter, or vanilla yogurt are all great options. Traditionally about 1/2 cup is ideal. If you prefer thinner smoothies, you can either lessen the amount of thickener or skip it all together.

Choose a liquid.

Almond milk is great for the added nutty flavor, but coconut milk pairs well with a tropical smoothie and gives a richer, creamier flavor. Whole milk or fruit juice also work well. 1 1/4 cup of liquid makes the perfect consistency for our preference. If you skipped the thickener, use less liquid as well.

Throw some add-ins in.

  • frozen blackberries, plus more for garnish

How To Make The Best Blueberry Smoothie

Our basic smoothie recipe calls for four simple ingredients:

Frozen blueberries For the best blueberry smoothie, use frozen blueberries! Frozen berries make the smoothie extra creamy. I especially love the frozen wild blueberries found in the freezer section of most grocery stores.

Can I use fresh blueberries? Yes, of course. Frozen blueberries blend into a creamier smoothie, but fresh berries will still work. You might find that the smoothie thickens as it sits a bit more than usual with fresh berries since they naturally have pectin, which is a thickener. Freezing can reduce the natural jelling effect of pectin, which is why this does not happen as often when the smoothie is made with frozen blueberries.

Banana I use one banana to make one large or two smaller smoothies. For the best tasting smoothie, use a ripe banana. For the creamiest smoothie, use frozen banana slices .

Half an orange When I have oranges in the house, I love adding them to my morning smoothie. It adds extra vitamin C and tropical flavor. If you dont have oranges on hand, dont worry, you can substitute other fruits like mango, pineapple or more berries.

Milk To help the ingredients blend, I like adding some liquid to the blender. For a smoothie without milk, use water. It still tastes amazing. For more creaminess use milk .

To make the smoothie, I add everything into a blender, and then blend until smooth. For an icy cold smoothie, throw in a handful of ice or use frozen fruits.

Make Sure You Have A Good Blender To Make This Frozen Fruit Smoothie

Strawberry Pineapple Smoothie (without Yogurt)

You want to make sure you have a good blender. I have been thru some cheap ones and they barely last a week. Dont waste your time like I did with these cheaper models, and just get something nice from the get go. It will save you time and money!

I have a Vitamix now and it was worth the money. We have had it for many years and its still working to make smoothies and more! Its paid for itself time and time again with all the money I have saved making smoothies and milkshakes at home.

Purchasing a Vitamix is pricey, but it is worth it. You wont have to keep replacing it like with the cheaper blenders. Amazon has several of them on sale right now for a great price.

If you just cant make it work in the budget, I recommend a Waring professional blender. I think it is the next best thing and it will get the job done. Now, it is not as good as the Vitamix but its a close second for a more reasonable price. Amazon has several Waring blenders on sale right now.

    Add Ingredients To Blender

For a smoothie that blends flawlessly, the order in which you add the ingredients does matter!

Place the milk, yogurt, and sweetener in your blender in this order, so they are closer to the blade. Place the frozen fruit in last, so its furthest from the blade.

Adding any liquids and lighter ingredients closest to the blade, and then layering frozen ingredients on top of that allows them to push the lighter items towards the blade for a smooth mix.

Using an inverted blender? No problem! Just reverse the order that you add these, so the frozen ingredients are furthest from the blade when you blend.

A few of my favorites are fresh spinach, kale, chia seeds and ground flax seeds. My kids love their smoothies and think they are a treat. They have no idea that they are enjoying something super nutritious or drinking spinach. I love being sneaky like that!

Chia SeedsThis superfood has been all the rage lately and for good reason. The health benefits of chia seeds are honestly ridiculous.

I usually add two or three teaspoons to every smoothie I make because theyre very high in protein and fiber.

A few other superfoods I like to add to my smoothies are flax seeds, hemp hearts, coconut chips, pumpkin seeds, granola, and spirulina powder.
