Are Smoothies Okay For People With Diabetes

There seems to be a continued beverage trend here in the US about drinking smoothies. For most smoothies, they are fruit-based so it appears to have an important food group that is packed with nutrients. Typically a smoothie will contain some liquid- fruit juice, milk, plant-based milk, water, or maybe iced coffee. And the smoothie may have yogurt or avocado or nut butter to add creaminess, there could be some 0 cal, 0 carb flavorings added, like spices, and then the main ingredient of fruits and/or vegetables along with some type of sweetener. Soare these smoothies a good choice for people with diabetes?

As a registered dietitian nutritionist, certified diabetes care and education specialist, AND a person with diabetes, this is what starts rolling around in my head when I hear about smoothies.

Smoothies and shakes can add more carbohydrate and total calories so they may not be effective for weight management.

Cucumber Mint And Melon Smoothie:

For a crisp refreshing, salad in a glass, try cucumber, mint, and melon smoothies. Cucumbers are cold and crisp. I love to infuse water with them. For nutrients, they are a good choice for Vitamin A, phosphorus, manganese, and magnesium. They dont have any fat, salt, or carbohydrates. They pack a lot of fiber into your diet.Honeydew melon is a low glycemic index fruit. There are only about 60 calories in a cup of it, and only about 12 grams of carbohydrates. Its mostly made up of water, but loaded with fiber, and other minerals. You get some copper, B vitamin thiamine, phosphorus, niacin, and pantothenic acid.

I know what you will say about this next ingredient, but hear me out. Cauliflower, has 77% of your vitamin C needs daily. Its also a good source of vegetable protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin K, riboflavin, and thiamin. There is also B6, folate, phosphorus, and magnesium. You will be grinding the cauliflower up very finely. The other flavors will mask what you may have as a visual for a glass full of cauliflower. Just try it, trust me! I did. I will say it was surprisingly refreshing, and I will make this smoothie again. Nutritionally, mint leaves have a trace amount of vitamin A and C, but they are great to flavor this smoothie.

How To Make A Spirulina Smoothie

This smoothie recipe is relatively simple. Just throw everything in the blender and youre good to go!

If the spirulina flavor is too much or too little for you you can adjust the spirulina anywhere from 1 tsp up to 1 Tbsp.

You can also increase the blueberries, banana, or pineapple for some extra sweetness and the vanilla extract can be adjusted to your liking as well. The version below is my favorite and the perfect balance for a spirulina smoothie.

Avocado Cherry And Almond Milk Smoothie:

This recipe has cherries, one of my favorite seasonal fruits. Cherries are good for you, and provide a wide variety of dietary benefits, including adding fiber to your diet, and 16% of daily Vitamin C. There is no fat, and no salt in cherries. They provide just 90 calories and 22 grams of carbohydrates per cup. A half cup serving is usually an ample amount when added with the other ingredients in this smoothie. Avocado may seem to be an unlikely pairing with cherries, but you will be pleasantly surprised at the taste. Avocados are good for you, but they are very high in fat content. Therefore, portion size with avocado is important.

They provide some fiber, vitamin K, folate, and pantothenic acid. There are 21 grams of fat, with only 15% in the saturated fat category, so avocados are mostly made up of good fats. There are 12 grams of carbohydrates, and a high potassium level, though avocados are low in salt. Added in small amounts to the diet, avocados are a source of good fats to increase HDL, or good cholesterol. You will also add a half a cup of fresh blueberries, and a half cup of almond milk to this smoothie. Yum!It is recipe # 5 here:

Green Smoothies For Diabetes

Diabetes-Friendly Green Smoothie Recipes When people decide to try green smoothies for the first time, they must make sure that they check their blood sugar level. These ingredients may be tolerable for some people but could prove problematic for others.

At about 1:30 I made a green smoothie with dandelion greens, mangoes. strawberries, blueberries, and a tiny bit of leftover orange/banana juice that I made for my son. My blood sugar was 180 before I ate the smoothie, so I took 1 unit of humalog for the overage and 2 for the smoothie.

However, it is widely assumed that obesity, inactivity, and high-fat and high-sodium diet lead to both conditions. Around 25 percent of people with type 1 diabetes have high blood pressure. On the other hand, 80 percent of people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes have high blood pressure.

Why Smoothies Can Make A Great Snack Or Breakfast For People With Diabetes

Type 2 diabetic normalizes blood sugar after one week of green smoothies

Not only can you pack them with delicious, diabetes-friendly fruit but, when prepared tactfully and enjoyed in moderation, smoothies can also help you drop excess weight. Maintaining a healthy waistline is critical for people with diabetes because too much body weight is linked with insulin resistance. Thats why losing even just a few pounds counts. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that dropping a mere 5 to 7 percent of your body weight can help prevent prediabetes from progressing to full-blown type 2 diabetes.

But it is important to note that not all smoothies are healthy. Some may be processed with added sugar, meaning they may have the opposite desired effect on your weight and blood sugar. The best way to take control of what goes into your drink is by measuring out portions at home to help keep calorie and carbohydrate counts down.

If youre a newbie to making smoothies, here are a couple of tips:

  • Add about 1 cup liquid as a base.
  • When adding nonstarchy vegetables, such as spinach and kale, be generous with portions .
  • Fruit should be portioned to about a single serving, such as 1 cup frozen berries or half of a banana.
  • Additional ingredients, such as avocados, seeds, and nut butters, should be measured to about a serving, too. For example, use a quarter of an avocado, 2 to 3 tablespoons ground seeds, or 1 to 2 tbsp almond butter.

1. Avocados

Pro tip: Avocados are super tasty in green smoothies, and they go great with dark cacao, too!

Blueberry And Almond Butter

  • Fiber: 8.5 grams

Why its great:

This smoothie contains a variety of macronutrients, with the seeds and almond milk/butter adding high amounts of both protein and fat. Similarly to the first smoothie we reviewed, youll notice that the calories and total carbs in this smoothie are a little higher than some of the others, making it better suited as a meal replacement than a snack.

This yummy fruit also contains important vitamins and fiber, all while having a relatively low glycemic index. This berry is truly a superfood for diabetics and non-diabetics alike.

The addition of flax and chia seeds make this smoothie even more beneficial. Flax seeds are an extraordinary food for controlling diabetes. These seeds can improve insulin sensitivity and help you to manage your blood sugar levels.

Chia seeds, on the other hand, are very rich in antioxidants, along with omega 3 fatty acids, fiber, and magnesium. All of these can help to reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications.
