If They Can Even Call Themselves Smoothies

Are Those Bottled Smoothies Healthy?, Ep200

Get more Spoon in your feed.

If you find yourself short on time during any part of the day, a bottled smoothie may seem like the smart choice to both fill up and stock up on nutrients. Most brands feed you claims of organic ingredients with 100 percent or more of your daily vitamins, but what does all that really mean?

In actuality, these smoothies are often packed with sugar and suspicious ingredients, so we ranked five popular consumer brands based on what youre really getting out of the bottle.

Welch’s 100 Percent Grape Juice With Fiber

How can a sugary, but healthy, food like fruit go from being healthy to unhealthy? Easy: strip it of its benefits. Fruit may contain sugar, but it also contains water and fiber: two nutrients that help fill you up and slow down your body’s digestion of sugars so you get a slow release of energy. When you turn fruit into juice, you’re losing this digestion-slowing fiber. Welch’s tries to make up for it by adding fiber back into their juice, but the mere three grams of added fiber is no match for the 36 grams of sugar you’ll still down when you drink a whole glass.

Tropicana Probiotics Pineapple Mango

By now you’ve probably heard of the belly-healing bacteria called probiotics Despite their popularity, did you know they’re not exclusive to the Greek yogurt aisle anymore? Lab-grown strains of probiotics are being added to foods that don’t naturally have them, like these juices. And, frankly, it’s a bit ironic. Emerging research finds that diets rich in sugary products are associated with a high ratio of bad bacteria to good bacteria in the gut. Experts believe the problem stems from sugar being the primary source of fuel for the fungi that can destroy beneficial probiotics. Translation: probiotic-infused sugary drinks are about as counterproductive as drinking an espresso before going to sleep. If you want some probiotics, we’d recommend making your own smoothie at home with yogurt.

Its tough to definitively identify individual food items as healthy or unhealthy. Most foods can be part of a healthful diet when consumed in the recommended amounts. Even sweets! Naked products certainly offer more nutrition than a soft drink, but is that enough?

To examine this further, we need to look at what kind of drinks they offer.

Should Children Drink Smoothies

Water and milk are the best drinks for young children, but smoothies are an option and offer an opportunity for you to include foods that your child might otherwise not eat. Theyre also useful for children who have a poor appetite, as well as teenagers who are always on-the-go. Unlike juices, smoothies retain the whole fruit, including the fibre, but dont forget they are a source of free sugars, which should make up no more than 5% of our energy intake.

Another thing to consider is that because we drink smoothies rather than eat them, we do tend to consume them more quickly. This means the sugars they contain may flood the bloodstream and, because no chewing is involved, the body doesnt get the same messages that help us regulate how much we eat.

For these reasons, what you use to make your smoothie is important ideally choose a combo of vegetables, dairy or nut butters and some fruit. This will ensure your smoothie contributes vitamins, minerals, protein and fibre. As adults we often add protein powders and other supplements to our own smoothies these should never be added to a childs smoothie.

Its important to remember that whole fruit and vegetables should always be included as part of a balanced diet this is especially important for young children who are learning to eat and are forming their own food preferences.

What Makes Some Smoothie Options Unhealthy

Even Moon admits it is no easy feat to pick the best store-bought smoothies: “Honestly, most of what you find on grocery shelves includes a lot of filler juices, and it’s challenging to find smart options.”

Sugar, in particular, can be a big concern when selecting a bottled smoothie.

“While smoothies can usually be a great way to get in nutritious micronutrients like vitamins and minerals, the main distinguisher here is sugar content,” states Rachel Fine, MS, RD, CSSD, registered dietitian, and owner of To The Pointe Nutrition.

“Many bottled smoothies contain a heaping dose of sugar . While we definitely want to reduce the overall consumption of added sugar throughout our day, a large dose of sugar can lead to blood glucose spikes soon after consumption.”

How Healthy Is Fruit Juice Reallyand Is It An Acceptable Substitute For An Actual Piece Of Fruit

‘Honest Tea’ Helping Pave Way for Healthy Bottled Drinks

If you turn over your favorite brand of orange or cranberry juice to inspect the label, you might be surprised to find it’s loaded with more than vitamins and mineralsit’s probably sky-high in sugar, artificial sweeteners, and sodium, too.

“When you eat an apple, you’re eating one apple, but when you drink 12 ounces of apple juice, you’re drinking the sugar of about four to six apples,” says Barbie Boules, RDN, founder of Barbie Boules Longevity Nutrition, Inc. “Even though it’s naturally occurring, that’s way too much sugar.”

What’s more, says Boules, there’s usually little to no fiber in fruit juices to slow down the absorption of the sugar. This digestion-slowing, belly-filling macronutrient is key when it comes to minimizing spikes in blood sugar and keeping your energy levels from tanking soon after you finish sipping a glass.

“The naturally occurring sugar in a whole piece of fruit should not be compared to a bottle of juice or refined sugar,” she says. “The fiber and a symphony of other nutrients and goodies can be lost in processing.”

Now you know you should always pick an apple over a bottle of apple juice when given the choice, but does that mean that all fruit juice is terrible for you? No, but you have to be cautious: because juices are often touted as a health food, it makes them dangerously misleading. Studies have shown that when people perceive food as healthier, we tend to eator drinkmore of it.

Rw Knudsen Just Pomegranate

Upon closer inspection of the label, you see that “Just Pomegranate” really means 100 percent premium pomegranate juice from concentrate, mixed with water. And that means R.W. Knudsen could have added more water to dilute this sugary beverage, but they didn’t. POM Wonderful does a better job by diluting their pomegranate juice to only 32 grams of sugar. When it comes down to it, however, you should still add more water to your pomegranate juice at home.

Spikes Your Blood Sugar

“The danger with fruit juice blends and store bought smoothies is they provide a high amount of quick digesting carbohydrates that can spike blood sugar,” Holly Klamer, MS, RDN, of My Crohn’s and Colitis Team tells us. “This spike in blood sugar can then come crashing down leaving you feeling hungry shortly after,” she continues. Aka, defeating the purpose of having them as a meal replacement.

What I Dont Like About Them

Ill confess, theres not much I dont like about these smoothie bottles.

I own LOTS of them, after all.

But in the spirit of balance, heres a couple of things that make them less than absolutely perfect:

  • They can get stained by certain things. I dont have much trouble with simple green smoothies or juices, but we have found that smoothies with extras like green or purple powders or oils do seem to stain the bottles more readily.
  • Sometimes I dont get every single skerrick of smoothie out of the inside of the cap when Im cleaning it with the toothbrush, but I suspect thats more down to my slap-dash approach than anything else. Rinsing them thoroughly with water as soon as youve downed your smoothie is definitely an important time-saver.
  • As they get older , Ive found that they do start to leak a little if the contents start to warm up . Im guessing that the nice seal between the bottle and the cap thread gets a little less than perfect over time.

No Juice Is Not Full Of Vitamin C

A Ranking of Bottled Smoothies, Strictly By Nutritional Content

Oh, I know, but they are all natural and full of vitamins. Yes, they are natural, and some have vitamins. However, many of the juices that meet the recommended daily allowance of particular vitamins, ADD the vitamins to the juice.

For instance, the nutritional panel of Nakeds popular Mighty Mango Smoothie touts meeting 100% of the RDA of vitamin A, however it is added as Beta Carotene.

The same juice only provides 10% of the RDA of vitamin C. If you ate the actual whole fruit listed on the label, however, you would consume 156% of the RDA of vitamin C.

There really is no argument for drinking fruit juice. Taste? Convenience? In fact, the detriment far outweighs any positives.

So Waitwhat Is The Final Verdict

One 16 ounce can of Pepsi contains 56 grams of sugar and Nakeds drinks contain up to 53 grams of sugar per their standard 15.2-ounce bottle. Cold Pressed and Half-Naked drinks boast 50% less sugar and are newer products available in the lineup. If the choice is between a can of Pepsi or a smoothie, the latter is the healthier option as it provides nutritional value, whereas Pepsi or other sodas is without added vitamins and minerals making it purely empty calories.

That said, The high sugar and calorie content can negatively impact your health if you already have large quantities of sugar in your diet, or if youre trying to lose weight. If you struggle to add fruit and vegetables to your diet, then a smoothie or juice can help you get those nutrients that you may otherwise miss out on with a diet low in fruits or vegetables.

Remember that juice should only be used for 1 of your fruit and vegetable servings in a day. Its best to get nutrients from whole fruits and vegetables for the majority of your daily servings. Given that the recommended amount of juice in a day is no more than 4-6 ounces, consider sharing your bottle of Naked Mighty Mango with a friendor two. The Half-Naked smoothies and Cold Pressed drinks are healthier options available from Naked when consumed in moderation.
